Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren Spring 2014--Two words: SIMPLY STUNNING. I know the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet just began but so far Kenyan-Mexican "12 Years a Slave" actress Lupita Nyong'o WINS for Best Dressed Woman.

The lipstick red silk crepe gown features an off-the-shoulder neckline, and "cape" detail framing and creating a fabulous silhouette. Simple and outstanding.

What do you guys think?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Spring 2014

Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Spring 2014: Zooey is wearing a golden-hued gown from Oscar de la Renta Spring 2014 collection. The gown features a high-lo tulle skirt and cropped sequined drop-shoulder outer top. This gown comes from an Oscar de la Renta collection that was "co-designed" by John Galliano...or it is rumored that he had a definite "design hand" in it.

I think Zooey looks sweet, it's a pretty color and I kind of love how the original runway booties were turned into acceptable red carpet pointy-toed heels.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive Fall 2013: Blanchett is wearing a black applique lace tulle gown in a fit-to-flare shape with inner nude-colored lining. The hand-made Haute Couture gown features scalloped lace neckline and curved short sleeves:

The diamonds are by Chopard--she looks stately, gorgeous and very "Old School Hollywood Glamour". Well done.

Julianna Margulies in Andrew Gn Resort 2014:  Margulies wore a black gown with gold leaf-like trim detail from Andrew Gn Resort 2014. the gown features a full pleated skirt, side in-seam pockets, plunging neckline and drop shoulders.

It's classic, chic and on-trend with what we are seeing on the red carpet in terms of the fuller "mini ball gown" silhouette. I think it's a great choice, what do you guys think?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture Fall 2013

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture Fall 2013: No surprise here, that Jennifer Lawrence wore Dior. She is the Couture House's spokesperson, of course. Tonight at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, she wore a strapless ivory silk organza gown that is pleated throughout then "cinched" at the waist and below the hips with belts. The hand-made gown is designed by Raf Simons and is from the Dior Haute Couture Fall 2013 collection, which means that if this were to retail, it would set you back approximately $50-$75,000. Take that darlings.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera Resort 2014

Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera Resort 2014: Taylor Swift looked dazzling in a strapless gown from the Carolina Herrera Resort 2014 collection. the gown featured a black top section and cherry red colored silk taffeta bottom half that was draped toward the back for dramatic effect...

It's elegant, very John Singer Sargent-esque (like the women in his paintings). She definitely had an air of Euro Aristocracy in this. It was also a nice change to see Swift in a fuller gown as opposed to a va-va-voom fitted Zuhair Murad or Elie Saab metallic-and-sequins number. What do you guys think? Is this a good change for her?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2014

Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2014: A BIG trend of the night--the full-on ball gown. And Sofia Vergara is showing it here with this strapless gown from Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The gown features an UBER tight torso/corset that is kept fitted to the hips and then the fullness begins, created by many large godet panels. It is DRAMA with a capital "D". And I think it works on her. I also think that gorgeous turquoise statement-making necklace is perfect for it.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung Spring 2014

Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung Spring 2014: When Zoe was being interviewed on E! by Giuliana Rancic, on the 2014 Red Carpet Pre-Show, she told her that designer Prabal Gurung designed this especially for her--and only her in mind--he supposedly sent it to her stylist who then brought it to her for the Golden Globes. I think it's a "different" dress.

To be honest, it looks a bit haphazard and while I like the top section, the bottom is confusing and awkward. I'm sure she will not get any "Best Dressed" titles in this come tomorrow but I can see the "insider NYC fashionistas" DYING for it.
But more importantly, what do YOU GUYS think? Yeay or Nay?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2014

Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2014: Actress Elizabeth Moss is making the news for A) giving the middle finger to the nation in E!'s mani cam at this afternoon's E! Red Carpet Pre-Show, and for winning Best Actress in a Miniseries/TV Movie...now, time for what she wore. Moss wore a fitted high-low gown from the J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The gown featured a fishtail hem, and interesting wine red and black square-cut sequin fabrication.

It was modern and chic. And it fit her well. I also love the ankle strapped heels. It was quite a sexy look for Elizabeth? Is it too much or does she pull it off?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall 2013

Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall 2013--One word: WOW. I remember when I saw photos of this gown from this Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall 2013 collection, I thought this was one of the most stunning of gowns--from the exquisite hand-done Art Deco-style sequins to the simple mermaid silhouette, it was perfection.

And I'm so happy it got to see the "red carpet" light of day with actress Kate Beckinsale wearing it.  I'm just surprised, no shocked...that J.Lo or Sofia Vergara's stylists didn't snatch it up first way back when it was shown at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2014

Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2014: I remember seeing this Pre-Fall 2014 collection of Prabal Gurung's and thought that it was simply gorgeous, modern, epitome of where fashion should be. I also remember how I thought this particular gown was so pretty. The color choices are superb. Sandra wore this gown tonight at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. The silk duchesse gown features a plunging neckline, high-lo hem (very ON TREND!) and full skirt (also on-trend). There is a white belt in the Look Book pic which Bullock (and/or her stylist) decided not to include.

I am not sure if the gown is as impacting on Bullock as it is on the model in the Look Book. Also, it is so difficult to wear silk duchesse since well, it wrinkles easily, as witnessed by the bottom half of the gown. I'd love to read your overall thoughts--what do you guys think? Better on the Look Book model or Sandra?  On a nicer note, however, I do LOVE her hair and makeup. Gorg!....as my Gays would say.

Michelle Dockery in Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013:"Downton Abbey" actress Michelle Dockery wore this beautiful gold paillettes over a putty silver-colored silk satin strapless ball gown from the Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 collection, which means it's Almost Vintage (in Red Carpet years!). LOL!

It's a classic de la Renta-style gown (secretly co-designed by John Galliano by the way) and is very on-trend with the slight high-lo hem and on trend with the red carpet in that...it's a BALL GOWN! Now, speaking of hems, notice the difference in hem length in the front on 5' 8" Michelle vs. 6' 1" tall Amazonian supermodel Karlie Kloss?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen Spring 2014

Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen Spring 2014:"Girls" actress Allison Williams wore a column-style black and white gown "inspired by" the Alexander McQueen Spring 2014 collection designed by Sarah Burton. the unusual detail here is the black and white feathers that covers the top section and shoulder straps.Very happy she didn't actually wear the runway version on the right. Leave that for Lady Gaga or Helena Bonham Carter.

And by the way, I thought her hair and makeup were SUBLIME.

Allison Williams being petted by Reese Witherspoon...I'll bet she got a LOT of that tonight!

Golden Girl:Gracie Gold with coaches Scott Brown and Frank Carroll--2014 U.S. Prudential Figure Skating Championships, TD Garden Boston Massachusetts

In Part Three of my Costumes Recap of  the 2014 U.S. Prudential Figure Skating Championships, it's time to discuss the Costume Highlights of the LADIES and PAIRS Free Skate/Long Program. The all-important ladies competition finished and the favorite to win gold--Ashley Wager--came in fourth. Luckily for Ashley, winning a medal at the National Championships does not determine if you will be chosen for the Olympic Team heading to Sochi next month. And  Just today, it was announced that 4th place Ashley Wagner was given a spot to go to the Olympics, therefore leaving actual third place medalist and 2010 Olympian Mirai Nagasu out. She, sadly, will not not be skating at the Olympics.
Don't Worry, I'm Going: (left to right) Mirai Nagasu and Ashley Wagner, during the Medals Ceremony--2014 U.S. Prudential Figure Skating Championships TD Garden Boston Massachusetts

Mirai Nagasu--Medals Ceremony--2014 U.S. Prudential Figure Skating Championships TD Garden Boston Massachusetts

Time for the Costumes:
Mirai Nagasu Free Skate: Mirai skated her FS to Music from James Bond by various artists, and I don't know why this didn't come to my Costume Commentin' attention before but...her costume is so similar to Ashley Wagner's Short Program costume (photo, right). It's black with sheer panels and features silver encrusted sequins at the torso and neckline mimicking a necklace. It is pretty, elegant and somewhat mysterious--and right for the "James Bond Girl" theme of her skate.

Ashley Wagner Free Skate: Speaking of Ashley, this is the costume she wore for her Free Skate to Music from Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev. The costume is designed by Jan Longmire. I've discussed this costume before and you can read my thoughts HERE.

Ashley Cain, Free Skate: Ashley skated her FS to "Ave Maria" by William Joseph wearing this beautiful costume designed by Denyse Frey and Darlene Cain. The white costume featured asymmetrical lines at the torso with silver crystals throughout, a sheer upper chest and pointed neckline and sleeve hem. She looked very much like an "Ice Princess", and in a good costume-way.

Barbie Long Free Skate: I actually really liked this costume that Barbie wore for her FS to "Warsaw Concerto" by Richard Addinsell. The costume was designed by Marilyn Mathiney and Susan Liss and incidentally, 5-time U.S, champion and Olympic silver medalist Tanith Belbin (and a Twitter Buddy of mine!) is her choreographer.

I liked this silver/gray costume featuring A WHOLE LOT OF silver crystals. The design is very "Retro" and and reminded me very much of Nancy Kerrigan's Lillehammer Olympic Free Skate Costume....

Christina Gao, Free Skate: Christina skated her FS to Music from the Angels and Demons soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Joshua Bell. Her costume was designed by Yumi Barnett-Nakamura. I thought the torso, which featured a sheer illusion backdrop with solid ivory with silver crystal panels, was quite unique and fab.

Hannah Miller, Free Skate: Hannah skated her FS to "Primavera" by Ludovico Einaudi. Her costume was designed by Elena Pollack. While I liked the color and juxtaposition of the nude illusion with solid with sequins...it's A LOT. The costume does pay homage to the music but it looks a bit sophomoric in its overall design and execution.

Polina Edmunds, Free Skate: Polina wore this ivory costume for her Free Skate to "Solveig's Song" and "Morning" from Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg. The costume was designed by Lilya Dukler and I thought it was modern, chic and correct, for Polina and that music.

Gracie Gold, Free Skate: Gold Medalist Gracie Gold skated her FS to Music from Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky. Her costume was designed by Gale Johnson and Denise Gold. I really liked this lilac colored costume which featured long sleeves, and uneven "skirt" and silver crystal neck, bust and  sleeve accents. If I had any criticism, it would be...

A TOO WIDE collar band. I just feel that it should have been 1/2"-3/4" thinner.Other than that: good (Costume) job. By the way, this is a COSTUME CHANGE and below, is what she wore...

At the NHK Trophy 2013, which I deemed one of the BEST Figure Skating Costumes of 2013.I am not quite sure why they decided to change the costume as I prefer the original design.

Pairs Free Skate Costume Highlights:
Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, Free Skate: Denney and Coughlin skated their Free Skate to Selections from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Their costumes were right on with the Musical. He looked sharp in his very fitted costume. Caydee--who can look two seconds away from a "Toddlers & Tiaras" grown-up cast member--looked good in her ivory sequined lace and chiffon number.

Gretchen Donlan and Andrew Speroff, Free Skate: Donlan and Speroff wore these costumes for their FS to "Pas de Deux" from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky.  The costumes were designed by Yumi Barnett-Nakamura and I thought they were VERY "The Nutcracker". I just wish that there was another way of designing a more modern/directional looking interpretation.

Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay, Free Skate: Zhang and Bartholomay skated their FS to Music from Les Miserables by Claude-Michel Schonberg. The costumes designed by Dawn Imperatore and James Peterson. These costumes were very "Les Miserables" and unless you were in a COMA you would obviously recognize that. I liked his more than hers. Nathan looked hot, musical-appropriate while Felicia looked as if it was a (costume) after-thought.

Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, Free Skate: Castelli and Shnapir skated their FS to Music from the Skyfall soundtrack by various artists. Part of me wanted Simon to actually look like James Bond--a Tom Ford-looking fitted suit, etc. But I get that it might be rather restricting when it comes to the skating. So, what costume designers Yumi Nakamura and Paul Ginandes came up with instead seems like a good idea. Marissa's black lace applique costume--by the way--does give a nod to the "Bond Girls" that one may see at a casino scene. Overall, this is a 7.5 out of 10 in my book.

Laura Carmichael in Viktor & Rolf; Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen; Hayden Panettiere in Tom Ford; Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

2014 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Black and White--
Last night we saw lots of black and white gowns on the red carpet. Above are eight examples of those such gowns. They ranged from "Sporty" (Julia Roberts in Dolce & Gabbana) to All-out Glam (Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli).

Zosia Mamet in Reem Acra; Heidi Klum in Marchesa; Julia Roberts in Dolce & Gabbana; Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli

My two top faves of this black-and-white group are Allison Williams in feathered Alexander McQueen andJenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli). The Fashion Fail here is Roberts. The strapless gown-over-a-white-dress shirt look is well, so 1998 Sharon Stone-at-the-Academy Awards-Been There/Done That and it also seems so blah and uncreative to be honest, especially when put along the other Glam Girls.

What do you guys think? Which one was your FAVE Black-and-White gal? And Not-So-Fave?

2014 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Red Dresses--
Red dresses were another big (color) trend at last night's 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Red dresses ON the red carpet have been quite the trend for the last few seasons so it's no surprise the color is going to continue to be big for the 2014 Awards Season. My Top Favorite gown here is the red off-the-shoulder caped column Ralph Lauren gown on Lupita Nyong'o. HANDS DOWN. The Best. And I would say the "1st Runner-up" would be Amy Adams in Valentino Couture.

Which Red Dress is your favorite?

Paula Patton in Stephane Rolland Haute Couture Spring 2013; Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta; Kerry Washington in Balenciaga; Margot Robbie in Gucci

2014 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Nude/Creme/Blush Gowns--
Creme/Champagne-y/Nude/Blush Gowns were big at last night's 2014 Golden Globe Awards and above are some examples. On the top for me are Australian actress Margot Robbie in a STUNNING and simple Gucci gown with extra-large crystal detail/trim; I also thought Anna Gunn's dramatic Donna Kara Atelier and Michelle Dockery's Oscar de la Renta were gorgeous as well.

Now, I have to mention Paula Patton's over-the-top exaggerated Stephane Rolland Haute Couture Spring 2013 gown....

I thought this gown is SUPER FAB on the runway(above) but it just didn't work on this type of red carpet. But I got to give her "Atta Girl" points for trying!

2014 Golden Globe awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Hi-Lo Gowns--
Hi-Lo gowns have been popular lately--both on the runway and the Red Carpet. Hi-Lo means higher in the front and low-to the floor, or beyond--in the back. Oscar de la Renta is a big proponent of this silhouette. It's a fabulous style especially since it can showcase the gorgeous shoes that sometimes get lost in a floor-length gown. And as a note: this is one of the ONLY ways shoes should be seen...

Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier; Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel; Aubrey Plaza in Oscar de la Renta

My favorite gown in this Hi-Lo group are Michelle Dockery's Oscar de la Renta strapless sequined dress and I also thought Elizabeth Moss' fitted and fishtail Hi-Lo was stunning.
Which Hi-Lo gown did you like?

Dick Button and Tenley Albright are introduced during the Smucker's Skating Spectacular following the Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, TD Garden Boston, Massachusetts

The 2014 U.S. Prudential Figure Skating Championships ended Sunday night--culminating in the Smucker's Skating Spectacular gala which followed the Championship Men Free Skate and corresponding Medals Ceremony for the Men...

The Top Four Men: (left to right) Jason Brown, Jeremy Abbott, Max Aaron and Joshua Farris pose for photographers on the medals podium after the Men's competition during the Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, TD Garden Boston, Massachusetts

Time to Recap the MEN and ICE Dance Costumes of the 2014 U.S. Nationals...First the MEN:
Jason Brown, Free Skate: Jason skated an AMAZING performance/skate for his Free Skate to "Reel Around the Sun" by Bill Whelan. His costume--while a bit gawdy and TRIM-a-licious, I still liked it because it goes perfectly well with his "River Dance"-like performance, it's a "show-stopper" of a costume (and maybe in a tacky way), and Jason IS a showman. At least, Jason is giving me something--compared to Brandon Mroz (keep reading!). I completely approve this costume, designed by Elena Pollack.

Jeremy Abbott, Free Skate: For his Free Skate to "Exogenesis Symphony Part III (Redemption)" by Muse, Jeremy Abbott wore this costume designed by Elise Fife. It's a printed loose top in brown, lilac and gray watercolor-like colorings. The ensemble is finished off with dark blue pants. It's a good look for this elegant, subdued, modern music.

Adam Rippon, Free Skate: I love how soft and drapy Adam's costume is (the top, at least). He skated his FS to "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" by Claude Debussy and this Jan Longmire-designed costume tries to mimic the Nijinsky-like soft femininity that one knows is associated with this music.

Joshua Farris, Free Skate: Speaking of soft and drapy, this is a fabulous costume on one of my favorite male figure skaters, Joshua Farris. Joshua skated his FS to Music from Schindler's List by John Williams in this Pat Pearsall-designed costume. Pearsall is one of the most renown Figure Skating Costume Designers and she knows what she is doing! The asymmetrical ivory ombre dyed cowl neck top is gorgeous; so fluid and so harmonious with the music.

Ross Miner, Free Skate: Ross skated his FS to Boston Strong--Music from the album Glory by Michael W. Smith. This was a tribute to his hometown of Boston--which also incidentally, was the host city of this year's U.S. Nationals. I thought this was a very nice costume--designed by The Work Room Productions--I thought the deep purple and silver sequins, created in a cross-like pattern was exquisite and enough of a costume exclamation point needed to highlight this emotional skate.

Max Aaron, Free Skate: Max skated his FS to Music from Carmen performed by Rodion Shchedrin and the Boston Pops Orchestra. I LOVE this sleek, modern costume. I especially like the use of solid with sheer panels (see above pic). It's one of my favorite male figure skating costumes for being so chic, sleek and modern--and for not using any overt "Carmen"-like toreador details...or a red rose!

Bye Bye Curls: Just one sad note--that he cut his hair! I LOVED it all long and curly in the front in above pic.

Brandon Mroz, Free Skate: Brandon is a phenomenal jumper--but when it comes to his costumes...Oyyy veyy!! This is what he wore for his Free Skate to "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue"--a ballet with music by Richard Rodgers about a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot by a jealous boyfriend. The 1957 film by the same name chronicles the dealings of crime, murder and widespread corruption in NYC's waterfront. With that being said and knowing the background, this costume is still THE. WORST. COSTUME. EVER. Seriously. It's like he--or whoever his costume designer is--did not even try; it's as if they went to an Express Outlet store, had a $100 budget and bought this above. Take a look at how the too-short shirt--that's not even tucked, lifts up and shows his tummy while he is jumping...it's just unacceptable.

Ice Dance Free Dance Costume Highlights:
Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani Free Dance: I've written about these great costumes that brother-and-sister ice dancers Shibutani and Shibutani wear for their Free Dance to a Michael Jackson medley. You can read that HERE.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Free Dance: Chock and Bates skated their FD to Selections from Les Misérables by various artists. The good: it's pretty obvious that they are skating to Les Misérables. Also, I think Evan looks sharp and perfect. The not-so-good: Madison's pink costume with shredded shoulder details is a bit lackluster--design-wise for me, it almost seems as if more time was taken for his costume than hers, which is odd since Madison designed these costumes. I also don't think the shape is flattering to her figure at all.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White, Free Dance: The gold medal winning ice dance pair of Davis and White skated their FD to "Scheherazade" by Nikoli Rimsky-Korsakov...

I absolutely love these costumes--especially hers--she looks like a near Eastern Empress! The chiffon gathering and draping plus the multicolored jeweled crystals are divine. Incidentally, this is a Change of Costume--well, more specifically, the color of the costume. This lilac color is a change from this...

What she wore at NHK Trophy 2013 in November...same design, just a color change.

Congrats and Good Luck at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics: Members of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team are introduced at the Smucker's Skating Spectacular following the Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, TD Garden Boston, Massachusetts.
