PROJECT RUNWAY RECAPS....."Project Runway" Season 14 Recaps--EPISODE 6: "Lace to the Finish" Lingerie Challenge

Bra Party: Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

On this week's Season 14 "Project Runway" on Lifetime...the designer's challenge was to create a bra-and-panties look for Heidi Klum's Heidi Klum Intimates line. The winner also received the "prize" of having their look put into production and be sold on HeidiKlumIntimates.com. The prize being bragging rights, since I am sure the winner will make no profit from the sales. But, as they say, that's the name of the game when you "sign on the dotted line". Now, let's get to the episode and RECAP highlights via photos...

Lingerie Challenge: Heidi Klum introduces the Design-a-Bra-&-Panties-for-her-Heidi-Klum-Intimates line Challenge--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6
Sexy Hot: Heidi Klum Intimates line ads

No Mood Trip...Again: Designers rummaged through a table of lace, Lycra, stretch satin and lingerie notions in their workroom, for their challenge--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

Strappy: During the Heidi/Tim Workroom Visits, Swapnil was having issues with the fact that he had run out of the white straps to complete his bra design...

Say What?: And this was Heidi and Tim's reaction to that...as well as the look he was creating--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

"Project Runway" Slumber Party: Heidi Klum gave the designers an added "twist"--to design a robe or additional garment to go with the bra and panties. Plus, she arranged for the set designers to turn the "Runway" stage into a slumber party room replete with pseudo beds, pillows, pajamas, slippers and mosquito netting (Why the netting? They're not at a Bali Beach Resort!!)

Ebenezer Scrooge Tim: Tim Gunn--doing his best impression of a Fashion Ebenezer Scrooge--as he woke the designers up from their supposed "Slumber Party" at the "Project Runway" Runway Stage--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

Runway Time: (L to R) Judges actress Bella Thorne, Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and Heidi Klum--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

My Faves:
(L to R) Designers Ashley Nell Tipton and Kelly Dempsey: Loved both of their designs. They were cute, sexy and in a non-Hoochie way, and I especially liked Kelly's hooded robe. At least she made a full-on robe...with a hood no less!--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6
(L to R) Joseph Charles Poli and Swapnil Shinde: Joseph did a great job in his designs. This wasn't "Matronly" at all. And I must give him props for actually finishing his robe and trimming it with lace (I know, I am using a very low bar, but, that's what these designers are giving me!)--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 6

The Winner:
Merline Labissiere: I wasn't a fan of Merline's design and frankly, I was very frustrated that she didn't use any kind of boning/foundation. I also thought the "V" seaming in the panties were...a bit redundant. #JustSaying. But Congrats to her for winning.

The Bottom:
Blake Patterson: To me, there was only one really, really BAD creation/design, and that was Blake's. The saggy pink lace boobies, the 1984 thigh-high panties design, the I-Had-No-Time-To-Create-a-Robe wrap....There was Blake and Who? It was just Blake as the worst...

I mean, SERIOUSLY...take a look at this:
NO.

Even Nina and Zac had this reaction to Blake's look:
Ayyy Dios Mio and GUURRLLL!!!!???--No Bueno Blake

Bye Princess Blake

Now, I must say that designing Lingerie isn't easy, and if any of you reading this were old enough to have seen me in 2005/2006; almost TEN YEARS ago on Season 2 "Project Runway", you know EXACTLY what I am talking about. Here's a Photo Refresher of what I felt like creating Lingerie back in Season 2:
Ay Dios Mio! Nick Verreos--Season 2 "Project Runway" Lingerie Challenge

With that off my chest, it's time for my RECAP of this week's "Project Runway" episode:

Season 14, Episode 6: Panty Raid

Some people think that designing and creating lingerie is so easy. "What’s so difficult? It’s just a bra and panties," they say. I learned a long time ago, the simplest things in fashion are usually the most difficult to design and/or create. It was way back in Season 2 when the producers last decided to have a lingerie challenge and unfortunately, I, along with my fellow cast mates were the victims. So yes, I was feeling the pain of the contestants in last night’s episode. But one thing I wasn’t feeling was sympathy for some of the tacky-licious things that came down that runway. Time to begin the panty raid…

The episode begins with Heidi greeting the designers on the runway stage accompanied by mannequins in bras and panties as well as posters of Ms. Klum in her lace skivvies. I think to myself, “Hmm, will this have anything to do with Heidi’s lingerie line?” And before I finished my thought, she announces that the challenge is to design a lingerie set inspired by her Heidi Klum Intimates line with a big incentive: the winning look will be reproduced as part of the collection and sold on HeidiKlumIntimates.com.

After an up close and personal inspection of the lingerie, the designers head to the workroom where they find the tables covered in lace, stretch fabric and notions. No trip to Mood, again. In case anyone is counting, we’re in the sixth episode and only one Mood visit so far. I’m beginning to think Mood might feel like a jilted ex-girlfriend...

Haute Tech Couture: Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 7--Unconventional Challenge: Revamp outdated technology into stylish fashion

This week on Lifetime's Season 14 "Project Runway", it was time for the SECOND Unconventional Challenge: Use outdated technology to create a fashionable and modern look. The remaining designers got a "taste" of what the challenge might be via...

An 80's Boom Box and cassette ape that was labeled "Play Me"--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"
The designers then went to a dilapidated-and-graffiti'ed warehouse where they had to "dumpster dive" for the outdated tech stuff--after Tim Gunn and Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Anne Fulenwider (above photo) gave them the Challenge--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Techno Trash: Outdated tech material used for the challenge--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Dragging: The designers--allegedly--had to push their carts filled with all their gathered tech stuff, to their workroom. Not sure that really happened. Maybe some of it (for the cameras). The rest, was hauled by the poor P.A.'s I am sure--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Designer Jake Wall found out that his beloved dog was being put to sleep and he was so distraught (understandably) that he bowed out of the Season 14 "Project Runway" race--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Swapnil Smoke Break: During the episode, designer Swapnil Shinde was seen procrastinating and taking smoke breaks--which we all knew would be a topic during runway judging (and it kind of was)--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Runway Day:
Guest Judges Actress Paula Patton and Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Anne Fulenwidr--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

My Faves:
Edmond Newton (left) and Candice Cuoco (right): These two were some of my favorites this week. Loved the Toreador-like fringe and computer keyboard sequin-like details of Edmond's dress and Candice's UBER sexy number was very Alexander McQueen--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Ashley Nell Tipton: Polaroid Couture! Ashley made a dress of muslin and Polaroid photos glued to it. I. Love. It. It should have won. #JustSaying --Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

Kelly Dempsey: But the actual winner was Kelly's silver duct tubing design. I liked this one as well. But those shoes...Nope!--Episode 7 Season 14 "Project Runway"

The Oh Dear:
Ratched and Micro-Hoochie: Merline Labissiere (left) and Swapnil Shinde (right): These two were Computer Wire Messes. Take a look at the back of Merline's creation (left)...yeah, that's the model's panties and about a 3/4" of a center back space. And then, Swapnil's HOOCHIE micro-mini painted muslin skirt. What is his obsession with micro-mini's??? Where is Nina Garcia and her "taste level" critiques when you need them??

Joseph Charles Poli (left) and Lindsey Creel (rihght) were the bottom two. If it was up to me, I would have said "Bye Bye" to Lindsey. But the judges--somehow, inexplicably--sent Joseph home. #GoFigure

Here is my myLifetime.com "Project Runway" Blog Recap and my thoughts on this episode:

Season 14, Episode 7: A Computer Geek's Trash is a Designer's Treasure

Dumpster diving meets vintage technology. Who knew that could create some great fashion? I would have never guessed it. But then, that’s why we have “Project Runway.” This week's episode was the second Unconventional Challenge this season. A lot of the creations were transformative, forward-thinking and yes, fashionable. And, as usual, some not so much. Allow me to dive right in...

The remaining ten designers wake up, get ready and "find" an 80's boom box on their kitchen tables. There's a cassette tape (Gosh I miss those!) with a note to "Play Me." Heidi's voice comes on, telling the designers that Tim and a guest will meet them in a location where they will get to "dive into" their next challenge. Wonder what that's all about? Are they designing 80's hip-hop style for 2015...with a swimsuit twist? As they arrive at their challenge destination, they find a dilapidated outdoor junkyard with graffiti on the walls and loads of 80's/90's technology such as floppy discs, VHS tapes, CDs, Polaroid's, vinyl records, etc...
Tim is there with Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Anne Fulenwider. She announces, "We love fashion [and] the people that are moving it forward," adding that "we also love smart innovative people moving the tech world forward." The challenge this week is to...

January Jones in Ulyana Sergeenko Couture Fall 2015

Jumpsuit January: Always a style trend setter, January wore a teal green silk crepe strapless draped jumpsuit from designer Ulyana Sergeenko Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2015 collection. I loved that she stepped out of the "Awards Show Red Carpet" box with...a JUMPSUIT. I liked the light color and delicate draping. Oh, and in case you don't know who Ulyana Segeenko is, well, she's a Russian-born designer (naturally!) and socialite. Oh, and she's married to a Russian insurance BILLIONAIRE. Hello!

What did you guys think? Is it a "Yes" on the jumpsuit or...Nay?

Heidi Klum in Atelier Versace Fall 2015

Heidi Klum, who was nominated--along with Tim Gunn--for Outstanding Reality Show Host, wore this lemon yellow silk tulle appliqued sheer gown from Atelier Versace Fall/Winter 2015"Boho Hippie-Chic" collection. In case you need me to reiterate, this was from a FALL/WINTER collection! So, yeah, on a personal level, as a designer, if I ever question using such a "Spring/Summer" color and next-to-nothing sheer silhouette...I'll always refer to this dress and maybe this entire Atelier Versace FALL/WINTER collection. Now, that I got that off my chest, what did I think?

The gown was a bit of a mish-mash. To be honest, if we saw something like this done by a "Project Runway" designer/contestant, I am about 90% sure the judges would TEAR IT APART. But leave it to Heidi to still "work it"! She was given lemons--or a lemon colored gown--and turned them into a glamorous red carpet moment.

What did you guys think? Yeay or Nay? Or as they say on "Project Runway", is it an "Auf"?

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell Spring 2016

In Lady Gaga's first appearance at the Emmy Awards, she wore a one shoulder sheath of a gown from designer/stylist Brandon Maxwell Spring 2016 collection. Maxwell--in case you aren't in the loop--is Lady Gaga's stylist, and just last week launched his own RTW Collection at New York Fashion Week.

The black crepe gown featured uinque side folding and A LOT of side-boobage, as they say. I kinda liked it. She looked modern, chic and dare I say, elegant. I also loved her makeup and hair.

What did you guys think?

Kerry Washington in Marc Jacobs Spring 2016

Actress Kerry Washington wore this silver sequined cocktail dress from Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2016 Collection at the 2015 Emmy Awards. I liked that she gave Cocktail length. It fit her nicely (she is model sample size 2, after all). And it was styled right with the simple ankle strapped metallic heels.

Now, in terms of the style of the dress, it was a bit 80's-meets-2006, with the shoulder padded and applique-encrusted shoulders. I wish those petal appliques would have been removed but as a designer, I understand to "not disturb my design" philosophy.

As always, I want to know one thing: Is it a Yay or Nay for you guys???

Taylor Schilling in Stella McCartney Resort 2016: As you may know, I LOVE color. And brightly colored gowns. Taylor Schilling wore this bright canary yellow one shoulder gathered gown to the 67th Annual Emmy Awards. The dress had a Boho Chic Maxi Dress relaxed vibe about it and the plunging back detail was quite sexy...and great for walking the red carpet in such HOT weather! (it was 100 degrees on the Emmy's red carpet as everyone knew). So...yes, I liked it! Oh, and I loved her hair and makeup as well :) Also, quite an interesting touch to add the belted detail.

Trend Alert: Black is Back...on the Red Capet--2015 Emmy Awards Red Carpet

At last night's 67th Annual Emmy Awards, we saw a lot of black gowns on the red carpet. This was slightly unusual, knowing that it was almost 100 degrees outside, and there was word that many stylists and their clients (actresses) were thinking of wearing lighter colors. We did see lots of white gowns as well as bright colors, but surprisingly, black was a big red carpet trend. Let's take a look at some who did it well, and some, not-so-much, in my opinion:

Amanda Peet in Michael Kors: I thought Amanda Peet looked quite Lady-like and elegant in this Michael Kors black textured damask ball gown. The peek-a-boo front open panel was on-trend as well. And I loved her simple top bun hair and barely-there accessorizing.

Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang: Oh, look what we have here. two trends: Black dress plus, there's that peek-a-boo front again! "Empire" actress Taraji P. Henson wore a sexy slightly see-through gown from Alexander Wang. The gown featured a lace-like gown-skirt, chain straps, and yes, that front peek-a-boo. I thought she looked glamorous and a nice contrast with her "Empire" over-the-top character's wardrobe.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in SAFiYAA: "Veep" actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore a stunning one-shoulder column gown from SAFiYAA. SAFiYAA is a British-based label headed by German-born designer Daniela Karnuts. Louis-Dreyfus accessorized with dazzling Chopard jewels, including a ring, bracelet and earrings. The gown was simple, architectural--the way Louis-Dreyfus likes her red carpet dresses. I think this was a classic and elegant way to show the Black is Back Trend.

Julianne Hough in Marchesa Spring 2016: I loved this ethereal gown on Julianne Hough. This dress is from the just-shown-at-NY Fashion Week Marchesa Spring 2016 collection. The collection is inspired by birds and feathers and bird cages. All of these elements can be seen in this one gown. I also think she was styled perfectly with the simple black headband and black clutch.

Amy Poehler in Michael Kors Collection: I'll just be blunt--This was a Yawn and a half. I'm always frustrated when I see this types of dresses on the red carpet--dresses that could have been bought at your local department store's "After-Five Dresses" section, and then hear the actress say "It's a MICHAEL KORS!". It could have been from "Black House/White Market" for that matter! And then, there's THAT HAIR. I cannot believe that someone actually got paid A LOT of money to do that hair. This was a fail in both dress and styling.

Jamie Lee Curtis: Jamie Lee Curtis wore this sculptural gown with long train at last night's 2015 Emmy Awards. I think this was a nice choice for Jamie Lee Curtis. She has a fabulous figure and the silhouette showed off all her glorious curves and statuesque form. I would have liked to see a side or center front slit and possibly more of a boat neck but other than that, I think this was very nice on Jamie Lee Curtis.

Natasha Lyonne: Fringe is HUGE for Fall, and here we see it on Natasha Lyonne's off-the-shoulder dress. I'm not so much a fan of this style on Natasha. It looks more like something out of "Chicago: the Musical". Now, what I'm not really a fan of is that sad, sad hair style (fire the hairstylist! Again!), and those clunky shoes (I can still see them through all that fringe).

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell: I liked this gown on Lady Gaga. I didn't like all the side-boob-age but overall, well done for Lady Gaga's first appearance at the Emmy Awards. For more on my thoughts, you can click HERE.

Rachel Brosnahan: "House of Cards" actress Rachel Brosnahan wore this black and copper/chocolate gown with keyhole front opening and waist tie. It was an interesting design but frankly, a bit Mumsy. But what really irked me was THAT HEM. What is going on? It almost looks as if someone top stitched the hem and did it really, really badly. I don't understand.

What are your thoughts on the Black is Back...on the Red Carpet trend? Do we want to see more black gowns or more color?

Finding Fashionland: "Project Runway" goes to Broadway...for inspiration--Season 14 "Project Runway" Episode 8 Lifetime Network

The magic and glamour of Broadway served as the inspiration of this week's Lifetime Season 14 "Project Runway" challenge: to create a fashionable look inspired by the Broadway musical "Finding Neverland" (which just happens to be produced by The Weinstein Company). The designers were off to Broadway to meet up with Tim Gunn and "Finding Neverland" star, actor Matthew Morrison--who were waiting for remaining designers at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater who announced the challenge...

Tim Gunn and Matthew Morrison--Episode 8 Season 14 "Project Runway" Lifetime Network

"Finding Neverland" The Musical--The designers got a chance to see the musical the night before they began working on their challenge. This must have been a nice respite from the madness of being on the show.

Trip to Mood!--The day after seeing"Finding Neverland", the contestants got to go fabric-and-notions shopping at Mood! If anyone is counting, this is only the second time in EIGHT episodes this season. You'll have to read my RECAP at the end of this post to know my thoughts on why that is...

During the workroom time/model fittings/right before Runway...
PASTIES & HOOCHIE MINI: Designer Laurie Underwood got attacked by this season's virus: PASTIES and TOO-SHORT Mini's. I have no idea why we have seen so many models with pasties and waaaay too HOOCHIE short designs. I chalk it up to tacky taste level and amateur hour sickness with not thinking of creating a lining/base for the tops. For a simple top like Laurie's, this should have taken maybe ten minutes to make--in a hurry and not so well...but at least, her model would have been covered Thank You Very Much!

Runway Time:
Guest judge model Coco Rocha (far left) , and judges Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and Heidi Klum--Episode 8 Season 14 "Project Runway" Lifetime Network

My Favorites were:
Swapnil Shinde: In my eyes, his Glen plaid and light peach chiffon design should have been the winner. It was romantic, so editorial, and most of all, it Fashion-moved me! But what do I know? He was safe, to the judges...not even on top!

Merline Labissiere: Speaking of also being safe, Merline's WONDERFUL "Game of Thrones" Couture-like design was also safe. It was my second favorite. By now, I am wondering what the judges are DRINKING!!!???

Candice Cuoco: Lover of the Dark Side, designer Candice Cuoco, ended up being the eventual winner of this challenge with her "Captain Hook-ina" leather-and-taffeta look with stretch capri pants. I liked this look but, Swapnil and Merline's designs were better. Also, her design was a little referential (on a very dumbed-down way) to John Galliano's fabulous...

Not a Fan:
(L to R) Edmond Newton and Kelly Dempsey: Edmond's top and pants were great but that purple puffy clouds vest was a Loofah Mess. And Kelly's look was a bit PBS Masterpiece Theater--the low-budget costume version--for me

The Oh Dear:
Ashley Nell Tipton: I've been a fan of Ashley's since the first episode, but...this gathered "Bride of Frankenstein" ombre look was something a first semester fashion student would have done. I get what she was going for but she went above-and-beyond what she can actually do. I think that her look was probably the worst of the bunch but because she has had some good weeks and I have a feeling the judges like her and would like to  keep her to the finals (I took a peek at the Finale Collections on Blogging Project Runway and this looks like it's Ashley!), she was in.

Laurie Underwood: Laurie's "Captain Hook Pasties & Too-Short" ensemble got the bottom two votes from the judges. This wasn't cute. But most of all, it was poorly executed.

Lindsey Creel: Lindsey, who had been on the bottom THREE times already, found this fourth time the one that finally made the judges decide to give her the "Bye-Bye". It was crooked and not flattering (high-waisted/smooshed boobies). But I still feel that if the judges were really voting for the worst, Ashley (as much as I hate saying it) should have gone home.

And now...here's my RECAP of this week's "Project Runway" Episode:

Season 14, Episode 8: Finding Fashionland

With Season 14 of “Project Runway” at its halfway mark and only eight designers left, it’s time for them to take center stage and shine. Quite appropriately, this week’s challenge involved Broadway. That analogy of stepping into the limelight was repeated over and over in this week’s episode culminating in some wonderful “leading designs,” and some recurrent “fashion understudies.” But enough of the theatrical metaphors, time for my recap.
The episode begins with an announcement from Heidi Klum. According to Heidi, she recently took her children to see the Broadway musical “Finding Neverland” and lo and behold, she LOVED IT…and thought it would be a good source of inspiration for a challenge. Cut to Tim Gunn with actor Matthew Morrison, star of “Finding Neverland” (and "Glee" of course), at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater. After explaining to the designers that the musical is about “what happens when you believe in yourself and you make your dreams come true,” Morrison introduces the challenge: to create a look inspired by the musical.
Tim explains to the designers that they can do ANYTHING. Yes, anything. As long as it’s still fashion and not costumes for the musical. Oh, and they get a $250 budget and (wait for it) get to go to Mood! But before all that, they get to see the musical.  I love Broadway shows so I know that if I was one of those designers, I would have been very pleased by the two and a half hour “brain cleansing” time spent seeing the musical. It makes for a nice relaxing break from the surreal and very stress-filled atmosphere of being on “Project Runway.”
The following morning they are at Mood...
