Khadija on Cosmo: Model Khadija Adam on the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine (US), October 1986

Time for a "SASHES AND TIARAS" Look Back Moment: Khadija Adam. Khadija Adam Ismail was a beauty queen turned Supermodel--and one of my first "muses" when I was a young boy dreaming of becoming a fashion designer. 5' 9" tall Khadija--or Kate as she was called--was crowned Miss Kenya 1984, almost thirty years ago. She then flew to London to compete in the Miss World 1984 pageant and was one of the 15 Semi-Finalists. Khadija was also crowned Continental Queen of Africa, a special title which gave her a trophy plus, of course, "bragging rights".

Soon after her "appearance" at the Miss World, she caught the eye of model agents, photographers and the world's top fashion designers, becoming one of the most sought-after models during the late 80's and early 90's. It's not usual for a Beauty Queen to turn into a Supermodel (only a handful have done as such, with Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008 and Helena Christensen who was Miss Denmark 1986 as standouts). Many girls competing in beauty pageants think that it could be a trampoline for such a career but it usually does not work out since the Beauty pageant world and the Fashion world are two different animals.

Khadija went on to model in Milan, Paris, NYC, eventually landing the cover of Cosmopolitan on October 1986. Also, about the same time she began doing all the top runway shows in Milan and Paris, eventually becoming the Muse for the one-and-only Yves Saint Laurent...

Saint Laurent who in fact was so moved by the stunning exotic beauty, that he created an entire Haute Couture collection based on her. In addition, Khadija also landed a very lucrative make-up contract with Yves Saint Laurent Cosmetics in 1986.

Here is a Photo Gallery of Khadija: the YSL Muse:

Khadija continued to model until the early 90's for various other designers, as well as doing countless editorial shoots, eventually leaving the model spotlight. In 1994, she unfortunately lost her fiance, Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger, who died after a crash. Not much is known about what she's been up to since but I will always remember Khadija as one of my "muses" when I was dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, sketching in my bedroom. I would draw designs with her as the model. Wherever you are Khadija Adam, Thank you for your beauty, elegance and for unknowingly, being one of my first "paper dolls".

NV Nick Verreos Fall/Holiday 2013/2014

I know we are in the middle of Summer (and it's a STIFLING 100+ in NYC, as well as other cities!) but yes, it's Fall/Winter 2013/2014 time, in terms of FASHION...or at least, us Fashion Designers and what we are about to send out to the stores.
 Nick Verreos--NV Nick Verreos

Last month, I shot my new "NV Nick Verreos" Fall 2013 Look Book in NYC--along with the help of my "NV" bestie, David Paul, our "NV" diva, Janet Scibetta and her daughter and friends as "assistants". Of course, we also had a FAB model, Dutch-born beauty Manon Krol--who modeled in my Spring/Summer 2013 Look Book, as well...

Here are some Behind-the-Scenes Pics of the Photoshoot:

This past Sunday night were the Finals of "Miss World China 2013" at the Galaxy Soho in Beijing, China. The winner was Contestant No. 8 Wei Wei Yu. The 25 year-old, 1.77 m tall (about 5' 10")  model beat out fourteen other contestants for the top crown.

Winning Contestant: Wei Wei Yu "Miss World China 2013"

The new "Miss World China 2013" is not so new to the beauty pageant scene--or this particular pageant especially. Yu was a contestant in the "Miss World China" pageant in 2009 as well as 2011, where both times, she got the Second Runner-up title (talk about perseverance--the third time WAS the charm!).

Chinese Beauties: "Miss World China 2013" (left) and "Miss World 2012" Yu Wenxia (right)

The new "Miss World China" was crowned by "Miss World 2012" Yu Wenxia, who incidentally was last year's "Miss China". Wei Wei Yu will now have a chance to do a back-to-back first-ever China win at September's "Miss World 2013" finals in Indonesia.

First and Second Runners-Up: (left to right) First Runner-up Hui Ning Chen--who also won the Top Supermodel title on Sunday as well (I can see why from that photo above!), and Second Runner-up Yuan Yuan Jiand

LOVE HER: Nick Verreos with Project Runway Season 11 Winner Michelle Lesniak Franklin--Bunin/Murray Studios "Road to the Runway Season 12" special

TONIGHT, as you know (or you SHOULD KNOW!!) is the Premiere of Season 12 Project Runway on Lifetime! Yes, kids, almost ten years and eleven seasons later, the little competition show I was part of back on Season 2, is still going strong.

Let Them Eat Runway! Project Runway stars Heidi "Antoinette" Klum (sitting in a scissor throne) and Tim Gunn (holding a needle scepter) and a bunch of naked models (BTW: where are the Designers?) in the scandalous promo poster that was banned in Los Angeles

I have had the pleasure of BLOGGING the Recaps as well as being a judge during the castings/auditions for the last TEN SEASONS (I need to change my nickname from "Uncle Nicky to "Project Runway Grandpa Nick"). I've also been asked to do my commentary on several of Lifetime Network's "Road to the Runway" casting special shows that precede the actual Season Premiere. The last one I did was with Season 1 Project Runway All Stars Winner Mondo Guerra and we had a blast! On that note--once again I was asked to give my "expertise" and cheeky commentary on the new season and it's designers--Here are some behind-the-scenes pics from the filming:

Pretty in Pink: Nick Verreos Lifetime Network's Project Runway "Road to the Runway Season 12" special

Hola Baby: Right after I finished my filming, guess who had just arrived??? Season 11 ChampionMichelle Lesniak Franklin! She--literally--had just flown in from Utah, where she was doing an event/appearance the night before. It was soooo good to see Michelle. She looked fabulous, naturally--even if she had just been on a plane and barely had three hours of sleep, probably! She wore a vintage blouson-sleeve high-neck blouse and perfectly fitting flared leg jeans. We DISHED for several minutes--OK, more like AN HOUR (while she was getting her Hair and Makeup done for her segment)--and then it was time to "let her go" and allow her to actually do what she was there to do: film her "I'm Last Season's Winner and I Know What's Up!" commentary.

Don't MISS TONIGHT'S Season 12 Premiere of Project Runway at 9 pm EST/PST and yes, the "Road to the Runway" casting special that airs before it at 8 PM EST/PST (because I'll be on that one!!)

"Gays of Our Lives": (left to right)"the Real" co-hosts Jeannie Mai, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Jerrod Blandino, Alec Mapa and Nick Verreos--"The Real" Daytime Talk Show

Last week, I was contacted to do a fun segment on the new daytime talk show "The Real". "The Real" is shown on FOX networks in LA, Houston, Tampa, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Washington DC and NYC and airs at 11am, 12pm or 1pm depending on the city.

It debuted this past Monday to great ratings (it won its time slot in the NYC market according to The Hollywood Reporter). The show is hosted by a bunch of FAB women: Jeannie Mai of Style Network, Comedienne Loni Love, Music Diva Tamar Braxton, American recording artist/former "Cheetah Girl" Adrienne Bailon and Tamera Mowry-Housley, of Style Network's "Tia & Tamera".

Prom Pic: Jeannie Mai and Nick Verreos--"The Real" TV show

My good friend Miss Jennie Mai--whom I've worked with a bunch of times--had told the producers that I would be perfect for a segment where three "Gay Besties" came on to give uncensored advice--from dating, grooming, to shopping--in short, EVERYTHING we "Best Gays" do EVERYDAY to our best girlfriends. The segment was originally title "Flaming Truth" (LOVE IT!!!) but was changed to "Gays Of our Lives".

Heyyyyy Girls: (Left to right): Jerrod Blandino, Alec Mapa, Nick Verreos--"The Real" TV show

Joining me on the segment were Jerrod Blandino, co-founder of Too Faced Cosmetics and one of  MY Best Gays, the one-and-only Alec Mapa, fabulous comedian and co-host of AMC's "Showville"!

Emmy-nominated Hosts: "Project Runway's" Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn

Hellooooo!!!! (think of how Heidi Klum would say it!)--Yes kids, it's "Project Runway" time again. Last night was the Season Premiere of"Project Runway" Season 12! TWELVE seasons! Oh and did I mention it got nominated once again for an Emmy!? ("Survivor" and "American Idol" did not--ouchey!). And Heidi and Tim also got nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Hosts--together! Congrats!!

There was A LOT of speculation leading up to last night's premiere when Lifetime released preview video of the first episode weeks ago showing the supposed skydivers jumping out of planes: EVERYONE thought "Oh Dear! Are the designers really going to be doing that!!?". Nope, thank goodness that didn't happen. Those were professionals. The point was to announce the First Challenge: to create a look out of Parachute Fabric, of course!

Now, there were lots of "Firsts" and new things happening in this season of the show:

Tim Gunn with judges (left to right) actress Kate Bosworth, Nina Garcia of Marie Claire and designer Zac Posen

Something New No. 1: Tim Gunn has a much-more involved role. Not only does he co-host, mentor and console the designers but he also takes part in the judges' runway process by bringing out the top and bottom designs for an up close-and-personal look. He also gets to save a designer. I think these are great new additions to the show.

Something New No. 2: The first ever hearing impaired/deaf contestant on "Project Runway", Justin LeBlanc

Something new No. 3: Seeing the model's CHA-CHA! (more on that later)--Photo Courtesy of TomandLorenzo.com (Thank Goodness they got that screencap!)

 Parachute Runway:
Parachute Couture: Model Carmen Kass models the ULTIMATE in a "parachute-inspired" look--Christian Dior Autumn/Winter 1999/2000 Collection designed by John Galliano (this 'chute is made of silk and all hand-stitched!)--This is what I was looking for in terms of looks from the designers but I realize it may have been a too-high aspiration, but nevertheless...

Here were some of my Faves:
Sue Waller: Great job on this dress--very directional and probably the most "high fashion' of all the looks that came down the runway. And I also love that the colors reminded me of the Galliano-designed Christian Dior Haute Couture creation from the photos above

Jeremy Brandick: Also LOVED this look--the skinny "parachute pants" were an updated--and so chic--version of the type of "parachute pants" I wore back in the late 80s (Oh Dear!)

Bradon McDonald: Bradon was the Winner with this beautifully ethereal, floaty dress/gown with rope detail. The colors were glorious, the movement on the runway was great...it all added up to a definite winner!

The Bottom:
Sandro Masmanidi: Oh huney! Yes kids THIS was the look which showed the model's V-Jay-Jay (notice how she's covering her CHA-CHA up with the ropes). Not cute. A vulgar mess in fact. She looked like a "Lolita" hooker who got caught in a parachute landing accident.

Timothy Westbrook: Timothy is one of the "characters" of this season. I have my thoughts on Timothy but you'll have to read my Lifetime "Project Runway Blog" Recap (starts at end of this post). In terms of his design--just take a look above. To add insult to injury, he sent his model barefoot and sans makeup and hair products. Tragique. I though he should have gone home.

But the Worst (according to the judges):

Angela Bacskocky: Angela created a hooded poncho. And nothing else. Bye Angela.

And now, without further ado, here is what I REALLY thought of the premiere Episode on MyLifetime.com "Project Runway Blog" Recap:

Runway Freefall

"Project Runway" is BAAACK: last night was the premiere of Season 12 of "Project Runway" and there's been some shake-ups. It took almost 10 years (Season 1 debuted in 2004!) and 11 seasons later for "Project Runway" to stir up its own classic format. As the saying goes, "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it," but obviously someone thought it was time for some fixin'—and some new additions. So before I get to the new cast and my "Nick Two Cents" on this premiere episode, let's discuss:
The New
• First "Project Runway" designer/contestant to be hearing impaired/deaf.
• The runway got a "Hollywood set" makeover—stage lights and video screen.
• New retail partner: Belks—a department store chain with over 300 locations, primarily in the South.
• Instead of weekly challenge money, the designers will get a GoBank Debit Card and will manage their spending for the entire season.
• Anonymous runway show—judges don’t know who’s designs are coming down the runway.
• Tim offers opinions to judges and sits with the judges during runway.
• Tim brings up the top and bottom designs so judges can view them up close and personal.
• Tim Gunn gets to save a designer; only one for the entire season.
• And a prize package estimated at half a million dollars!
I am intrigued by a couple of these new additions, such as the judges not knowing whose designs are coming down the runway and the up close-and-personal look into the garments. (God forbid they did that during my season—several of my hot-glue-and-safety pin-loving cast mates would have been IN TROUBLE!).
Cast of Characters
I had the pleasure of judging the Los Angeles Castings/Auditions—along with Tim Gunn—and was happy to see two of the designers we chose make the final cut: Alexandria von Bromssen (the Aristocratic-sounding Euro from San Mateo) and Bradon McDonald (the former Mark Morris dancer who just graduated from FIDM, my alma mater). Besides these two, there's a bevy of "characters": (among others) a high heel-wearing sustainable fabric-burning unicorn lover; a swarthy mustachioed Russian with...

Pitbull and J Lo performing at Univision's "Premios Juventud 2013", BankUnited Center Coral Gables Florida

Thursday night were the Premios Juventud 2013, which occurred at the Bank United Center in the outskirts of Miami Florida (Coral Gables to be exact). Premios Juventud (translates into "The Young/Youth Awards") are roughly like the "Teen Choice Awards" but a bit more cool and yes, with a HECK of A LOT more Salsa, Chimichurri and all that spicy stuff! The highlights included Pitbull (looking dapper as always--very "Resort Pitbull") and Miss J Lo performing, as well as her ex--44 year-old Marc Anthony--showing up on the red carpet with his 22 year-old girlfriend Chloe Green (Oh Dear, can you say "Mid Life Crisis"!).

The awards show aired on Univision to AMAZING ratings. Just in case you didn't know, according to Deadline Hollywood, the show made the Univision Network No. 2 behind CBS in total viewers for the night and the three-hour broadcast No. 1 in the adults 18-49 demo. In the demo it beat originals from ABC’s Motive, Wipeout and Rookie Blue, CBS’ Big Brother, NBC’s The Winner Is… and Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen. The awards show was top rated in primetime in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, and Sacramento. Among U.S. Hispanic viewers, it beat the combined totals for the most recent American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Golden Globes. So, in other words, DON'T MESS with the Latinos and especially with the Premios Juventud! Soon, you'll be seeing gringos like Taylor Swift and Lord Knows Who trying to get themselves on this show (I hope not!).

"Chica Orbit" Rosario Abarca(in Nick Verreos-designed dress) and Nick Verreos--Premios Juventud 2010

But moving on...I have had the pleasure of attending several "Premios Juventud" in the past when I was the "Orbit Gum"/Chica Orbit Fashion Spokesperson and created and designed several looks for the "Chica Orbit" since Wrigley's and Orbit Gum was a sponsor. Now, speaking of looks, it's time to discuss the "Premios Juventud 2013" red carpet ...Estan Listos? (Are you ready?) Let's begin with the "Bueno" and I'll do a "Ayyy Mija!" and "Ayyy Mijo!"  posting afterward of course!

The Bueno/OK...

Jennifer Lopez: During her "Premios Juventud 2013" performance to a medley of her hits "On The Floor", "Dance Again" and "Don’t Stop the Party" performance, she wore this hand-applied sequin applique black-and-nude jumpsuit from Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013/2014--This couture catsuit probably would cost about $40,000+ (if one would be wealthy enough to order it)--Miss J Lo got it made to her size at probably no fee darlings.

Zuhair Queen: J Lo also wore this creme and gold sequin mini dress from Zuhair Murad Spring 2013 to get her "Icono Mundial" (World Icon Award) and "Actriz Que se Roba la Pantalla" (Actress Who Steals the Screen award) at last night's "Premios Juventud 2013".

The Good Minis:
Alejandra Espinoza: The first "Nuestra Belleza" beauty queen winner (back in 2007) (and Olivia Culpo "Miss Universe 2012" doppelganger) wore a bubblegum pink-colored taffeta MICRO-mini dress. Her body looked SLAMMIN' and I liked the color. I thought the dress was waaaay too short but yes, she looked muy caliente--in a good way. Her nude tacky platforms are a throw-back to her old pageant days FOR SURE!

Antonietta "Tony" Collins: Pageant-posin' Antonietta--who is an anchor with Univision Deportes (Univision Sports) broadcaster/anchor--looks very pretty in this blue-and-silver sequined mini dress. I like the dress and its backless detail. It's not too Hoochie but still packs a nice "Premios Juventud"-red carpet punch. And PS: the Pageant Pose IS SLAYING ME!

Jessica Sanchez: 11th Season "American Idol" runner-up Jessica Sanchez was invited to Univision's "Premios Juventud". Jessica is half Mexican-Amercian (her father) and half Filipino (her mother). I was a fan of her coral colored skin-tight dress. It was "Herve Leger"-Lite. Great color, good nude heels and perfect accessories.

Thalia: Blonder-than-Ever Latina Superstar Thalia, wore a sari-styled mini white dress to last night's "Premios Juventud 2013". It was fine with me. It just seemed so "there"; I just wish her stylist would reach out to all the top brands, especially Gucci, McQueen, Dior, etc. and see if they would lend her something more "High Fashion". Or at least, have her stylist call me, I'll lend her a FAB sexy COUTURE dress from my high-end NIKOLAKI line.

The Good Flared Girls:

Mini Flared: TV and Radio Personality Argelia Atilano (left) and former Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera (right) both wore short flared mini dresses. Argelia was right ON TREND with her neon "highlighter yellow" dress with metallic skinny belt. Zuleyka, on the other hand, wore a TOO-SHORT printed flared style. If I had to choose a winner, it would be Argelia. Zuleyka's is MUY MUY short.

Los Hombres Good:

Cristian de la Fuente (with daughter Laura) and Casper Smart: Chilean-American and "Dancing With The Stars Season 6" star, de la Fuente looked elegant in his navy blue jacket, lilac dress shirt and flat-front slacks look. His daughter Laura looked very cute in her pink dress and gold fashion high-tops. Jennifer Lopez' main squeeze Casper looked fine in his green suit and dark navy dress shirt. He gets "Atta-Boy" points for looking sharp.

Jason Canela: Exotically handsome telenovela Cuban-American actor Jason Canelas looked as if he was on an Italian Riviera Holiday with his white shirt, blue-grey jacket and pink/coral jeans look; I loved this outfit on him, Jason looked young, cool and Euro Sport dressed-up.

Sebastian Rulli: Mexican-Argentine actor Sebastian Rulli (right) also looked very "Italian Riviera Holiday" at "Premios Juventud 2013" in his white dress shirt, white slacks and navy blue jacket outfit. I thought it was very elegant. I just don't know about his "plastic-looking hair" look.

Maxi Iglesias: Spanish actor/model Maxi looked so cute in his light orange shorts and baby blue jacket look at "Premios Juventud 2013". Si, it was MUY casual, but I kinda liked it: I do think that this would be a perfect outfit for a special pool party in the Hamptons, but for the "Premios Juventud" red carpet, he might have wanted to be a bit more dressed up.

Marc Anthony and his girlfriend Chloe Green: Marc Anthony looks good--elegant, sleek (maybe button one more button Marc--It's a bit plunging!) but...because of her, they belong in my next post...the "Ayyy Mija!" and "Ayyy Mijo!" (What is with those Stripper HEELS!!!???)...

***NEXT UP: My Premios Juventud 2013 "Ayyy Mija!" and "Ayyy Mijo!" Red Carpet WHO WORE WHAT? Posting!!!! Stay tuned muchachas y muchachos...

Premios Juventud Ayyyy Mijas! Yes, kids, in my last post I discussed my picks for #MejorVestidos (Best Dressed) at Thursday night's "Premios Juventud 2013" red carpet (it was more of a striped green-and-orange "Welcome Door Mat"!!??). So, now, naturally, I am following it up with, what I like to callthe "Ayyy Mija's!" of the bunch....the not-so-OK dressed. And don't worry, the MEN are not exempt--my following post will be all about the "AyyyMijo's!". Now--in terms of the Ladies at the "Premios Juventud 2013" red carpet--there weren't that many truly tragique looks  but just some that ended up here because of too-big hair, too many accessories, or too Drag-Queen-y high pumps. So, it was more Styling "Oh No's". With that said, Let's see who made the cut:

Pageant Queens:

Carolina Tejera: Venezuelan model and telenovela actress Carolina should have been better (style) advised. What Prom-and-Pageant shop in Boca Raton did she get this from? It's a dress even a girl running for "Miss Teen USA Arkansas" would reject. And need I discuss those Drag Queen gold platform heels? Ayyy Dios Mio!

Jessica Santiago: The gorgeous Jessica was Miss Gurabo Universe for the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2011 pageant and she was Miss P.R. 2011. You may also remember her from being on Cycle 12 of "America's Next Top Model" (she was eliminated very quickly, second in fact). While I do love the color of this dress and the hi-lo cascading silhouette, there's something about it that makes me think her designer tried to do Dior Couture but the operative word was tried. I'll give her points for "bringing it". But, it still is way "Too Mucheey".

Marisela DeMontecristo: Speaking of Pageant Queens, this one actually brought HER CROWN! And wore it! With a sensible "I'm Going to Host an Event at Macy's at 3pm" outfit! Marisela was just crowned "Nuestra Belleza 2013" back in May (therefore this is why she is proudly wearing her crown!). She's Salvadorean and from LA. While I do like the bright bubblegum pink color of the dress, I still think it could have been a little more cocktail and a tad more sexy. The lining is too short and the belt is distracting. And once again, WHAT is with the platform pumps? Strappy heels would have been much more NOW.

Leslie Grace: Singer-songwriter of Dominican descent, Leslie Grace is GORG! She looks like a former "Miss Universe" (this is why she's in this section). Her hair, makeup and heels are perfect. I'm just not sure of this feathered multi-printed mini dress. It's a little too much as if she's doing a hot dance revue in a Kenyan Safari.

Orange Girls:
Claudia Molina: Claudia is an Exercise TV Trainer (as you can tell from her super-fit body!) so of course, she wears a tight-fitting mini dress showing off her best assets. There's nothing wrong with the dress, I think it's the combination of the dress, PLUS those Jessica Simpson-looking platform heels PLUS the big hair, PLUS the orange nail polish PLUS the big dangling earrings...that makes her look a bit Choncheey (translation: tacky-licious).

Lourdes Stephen: Presenter and Moderator of Univision's very popular "Sal y Pimienta" (Salt & Pepper") TV Show, Lourdes also wore an orange-hued dress. It featured a silk shantung-looking fabrication with a "bra-top" and flared skirt connected by illusion nude mesh. It was a bit too "Prom & Pageant" for me--and very, very "Figure Skating Costume".

Marjorie De Sousa: Marjorie is a Venezuelan telenovela actress and she wore an orange bustier with tropical printed flared skirt, orange earrings, multicolored bracelets and purple, pink and gold heels. It's A LOT of look. I think this is fine if you're one of the contestants for "Miss Venezuela" and this is your "Presentation Outfit" (it all fits her very nice and looks almost custom-made) but she looks a bit "Vanna White in Kauai" in this.

Shorts Happy:
Shorts and Rompers are BIG for Summer 2013 so it was no surprise to see some of them at Thursday night's "Premios Juventud 2013"alfombra roja (red carpet). Two ladies who wore shorts were Eiza Gonlalez (above) and Audris Rijo (below). The very cute Eiza is a Mexican actress and singer and she wore a gold-and-creme jacket-and-shirts with a bra-top outfit and then over-accessorized it with a BUNCH of necklaces, pearls and one big ol' crystal cross. While the look is very Dolce & Gabbana runway from several seasons ago, it seems a bit too over-styled. And the red peep-toe heels with the outfit don't make any sense.

AudrisRijo: Audris (above in the white romper look) is a beauty pageant winner of Miss Turismo Dominicana 2009 (Miss Dominican Republic Tourism) and the First runner-up at this year's Nuestra Belleza 2013.  We can tell that the "Beauty Pageant' girl is still 110% in her system. Just look at that perfect pose and THAT hair! The latter was my problem with Audris' look. I like the romper and those shoes; they're both cute. But her "Miss Universo" up-do bun is waaaay too fancy for this casual-chic outfit.

Uh-Oh Printed Mijas:
Erika Buenfil: Erika is a "Grand Dame" of telenovelas (as opposed to all those other little girls running around). She starred in her first ever soap opera in 1977! This Mexican actress is SUPER well-known, super wealthy and has received many awards and accolades. Now, someone of her stature and fame, should be able to work the red carpet in a Gucci or Elie Saab dress (even if her stylist couldn't get them for free, Erika could afford one...or TEN for that matter). But she chose to wear this frumpy and Mumsy printed dress that makes her look as if she's going for a tea party or brunch. I expect more "Diva"-like looks from La Buenfil. Just sayin'

Printed Chicas: Now, don't get me wrong I LOVE me a PRINT but sometimes, prints are tricky to wear on the red carpet and these two examples show us why...Let's begin with Danna Garcia (above): Colombian telenovela actress Danna Garcia is so stunning (like a young/modern Liz Taylor)! I like that she "stepped outside the box" with this tropical printed bustier and high-waisted pants. I just feel she should have had just ONE item printed--the top--and then worn solid colored pants. And speaking of the printed pants. I don't like how there's a "Bulls Eye"-like print RIGHT on her "Lady Region". It's NOT CUTE.

Rebecca Marie Gomez (right): Known better as rapper/singer/YouTube sensation "Becky G", 16 year-old Rebecca does look young and fresh in this look, but again, it's too mucheey print. This time around, I would have kept the pants but given her a solid (navy colored) tank top. Done and done. And lose the neck pin; that's so 1993 and not in a good 90s Retro way.

Finally...
Marc Anthony and girlfriend Chloe Green: Marc looks fine in his well-fitting tuxedo. I only wish he had not unbuttoned soooo many buttons on his shirt. I love a plunging neckline on a guy but...MIJO! It's Miss Chloe who belongs in this "Oh No!" group. She is the Heiress to Topshop. Yes kids, that FABULOUS UK brand and well, how could she look like this? Especially those platform heels of hers. Can you say "Que TACKY??!!" I can.

Couple Dont's: Radio personality Raul Brindis (left) showed up with his date at "Premios Juventud 2013". Nothing wrong with Raul, he looks quite sharp and right for the event. It's his date that's the problema. She looks like the Hostess at Yamashiro's.  And speaking of problems: On the right are Universal Music Latino recording group Domino Saints. He looks fine for the event; very Rock-&-Roll Lite--"Hipster Latino". It's her--when you wear a dress that says "What Is Your Problem" emblazoned on the front, you've got a PROBLEM. Does she really want me to answer that question?

Ricky Martin and Sensato: 2004 called and they want their fashion back...

After discussing the Best Dressed at Thursday night's Univision-televised "Premios Juventud 2013", as well as the "Ayyy Mija's!" (Oh Dear! Ladies), it's now time to wrap it all up with the HOMBRES. For some reason, the men did not do well, when it came to the red carpet on Thursday night. There were some HOT MESSES; lots of Miami Vice influences, lots of D-bag (I can't use the entire word but you know what I'm talking about) looks that one would see on a random Friday night at a very C-list Hollywood and/or Vegas nightclub; in other words, some of my Chicos need help! So, let's talk about the "Ayyy Mijo's!" of "Premios Juventud 2013":

Alex Ubago: Spanish singer-songwriter known for his ballads looks more like a CAA Agent ready to go to a meeting with his clients, than an actual singer who makes all the chicas swoon. It's a nice Zara-looking suit, but not for "Premios Juventud". On a good note: I give him points for not looking like an extra on "Miami Vice". Speaking of...

Don Johnson Eat Your Heart Out: Just because the event is close to Miami, does not mean you have to give a "Miami Vice" outfit. Boys, Oh Boys. Host of Univision's "Despierta America"Morning TV Show, Johnny Lozada (left)wore this outfit of white slacks, red jacket and blue t-shirt with a graphic of eye glasses. Oh and yes, a sockless suede loafer to finish it all off. What. Is. Going. On? Is it 1986 all over again? He's too old to be wearing graphic tees--an elegant dress shirt would been much better.

Venezuelan music duo Chino y Nacho--Miguel Ignacio Mendoza (left) and Jesus Alberto Miranda Perez (right) --These two did their best to give "Miami Vice" circa 1985 at the "Premios Juventud 2013"alfombra roja. It's sooooo obvious "Miami Vice" that I wonder if the joke was on us and this was on purpose. Of the two I would pick (if I had to!) Chino (the one on the right) as the better dressed one--at least his pants are skinny and they fit him and the shoes are a bit more on-trend. But together, these looks are better left for an 80's themed dance party.

Print Boys: Lots of the ladies at "Premios Juventud 2013" wore printed looks and it seemed to have infected some of the men as well. Exhibit A: Mauricio Henao--Colombian-born model, actor, heartthrob Mauricio is a HUNKA HUNKA of a man but in terms of the style he wore to the award show, he must have gotten confused and thought he was attending a Beach Party in Cancun. Let's start with the tropical printed jacket, the worn jeans, the v-neck t-shirt, the I-Just-Got-This-at-the-Quicksilver Store necklace, and to finish it off: Espadrilles! It's a fun look, if you're attending a Pool Party in Miami Beach. But for "Premios Juventud"?

Exhibit B: Dominican rapper Sensato--Two Words: Oh Dear! First off, is that a jacket of cherub babies? And then, the skin-tight leather pants, the gold chains, the douchey sunglasses...Ayyy Mijo! Please tell me girls are not attracted to this look. Please! It's so "I'm waiting in a long line at a Vegas club...and I may not get in".

Eugenio Derbez: Mexican actor of film and comedy (he's also a Formula Three Auto racing driver!) Eugenio is an icon in the business. But this outfit he wore at "Premios Juventud" does not say Spanish-language actor/icon, instead it says "Pirates of the Caribbean Meets Django Unchained". I am so confused by it. The jacket looks as if it was made of couch fabric and then he wears it with a white no-collar shirt, basic flat-front pants and a belt straight out of Ross Dress For Less. I have a feeling someone at Disneyland is missing their costume. Seriously.

J Balvin: Colombian Reggaeton recording artist J Balvin also thought he was attending a Beach/Pool Party (along with Colombian heartthrob Mauricio Henao): white linen almost-see-through pants, a heathered knit shirt, a sleeveless jacket (?) and too-big-for-his-feet open toe sandals. I just can't. No Mijo. No.

Larry Hernandez: American Mexican Regional Music singer/composer/TV star Larry Hernandez is not looking too happy in this picture (why the "stink face"?). I wouldn't be looking to happy if someone told me that I had to wear this outfit.  The jacket, pants, shoes...they all look very expensive but, they shouldn't go together. It's as if he walked into the Gucci or Dolce & Gabbana boutiques on Rode Drive and told the sales person "Look, I've got $2,000, put together an outfit for me...that's ON SALE!" without any thought to whether or not it would actually look good. He looks like a Russian Mafioso waiting for his eight mistresses to show up. Not a good look.

Oh Ricky You're So Fine...Oh Ricky!---Ricky Martin! Can we start with the fact that Ricky signed a pack with the Beauty and Ageless Devil. For Sure. He looks the same way he looked FIFTEEN YEARS AGO! I want the number to his skin care expert--plus the products he uses! Now, the fashion: I have to say that after looking at all the other "Ayyy Mijo!" messes above, Ricky looks pretty good. It's not a bad look, it just seems a bit contrived, a bit "Yoshi Yamamoto Meets Armani Exchange circa 2004". But again, I will end on a good note: He still looks FIIIIIIIIINEEEEEE!

SUPER Diva Naomi Campbell opens the Atelier Versace Fall/Winter 2013/2014 runway show

The Look: First off, the one-and-only Naomi Campbell opened the Atelier Versace Fall/Winter 2013/2014 runway show in Paris on Sunday--marking the official start of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. She slinked down the runway with a jacket (barely) held together by crystal hooks and eyes--a main detail used throughout this collection designed by Donatella Versace and her design team.

Speaking of barely held together, this was also a running theme of this collection, one that she said was inspired by 1930's black and white fashion photography--such as the iconic Horst P. Horst photo of the Mainbocher corset (above, left). The garments--all made of the most luxurious fabrications, such as croq skin, knitted mink, sequined lace, shredded tulle (these garments can cost $100,00+ if you were to order them)--showed various stages of "undress", as if they were peeling off the body, with lots of skin and intricate lace undergarments poking through. And the final gowns were very red carpet perfect for Donatella's girls like Uma and Angelina (lots of high slits darling!). Here are some highlights:

Blooming Canary Yellow: Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013/2014

The Look: Designer Giambattista Valli loves a flower motiff. And this Haute Couture collection was no exception. Even though it is supposed to be Fall/Winter, this collection looked VERY Spring/Summer; in terms of its colors, the flower theme, the silhouettes and lack of MINK, wool, and anything else associated with the words "Fall" and "Winter". But, at the same time, if you are a Valli Couture client and can afford a $50,000 cocktail dress for your next Royal Wedding Guest invitation...then, who cares?

Capodimonte and Meissen flower porcelain

This Fall/Winter 2013/2014 Giambattista ValliHaute Couture collection was inspired by porcelain--particularly the ones from Capidimonte, Meissen and Wedgwood. The dresses--not one pant in sight--were a Crillon Debutante's Dream; lots of short puffy and pleated skirt dresses and gowns to make a multimillionaire's very young girlfriend--or red carpet actress--blush with excitement.  Royal Wedding: "La Robe de Mariée" Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013/2014

Lebanese couturier Elie Saab is a favorite of the Euro Royals--most recently designing what was arguably one of the Most Beautiful Royal Wedding Dresses of last year for the Luxembourg Royal Wedding and Stéphanie, the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. So, it is only fitting that he title his most recent Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013/2014 collection he showed yesterday in Paris, "Ceremonie Royale"--a Royal Ceremony, inspired by the Palais Brongniart and how gorgeous dresses would look like flowing through its columns.

Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall/Winter invitation and the Palais Brongniart

The Look: Gorgeous, sumptuous, Royal-looking dresses--well and one pant ensemble. The silhouettes weren't so oppulent, quite simple actually. It's Elie Saab doing the same thing he's been doing...very stunning garments, beaded and crystal'ed like only Elie Saab's atelier can do. Speaking of the crystals and embroidery, this season these were inspired by jewels in a crown: ruby, emerald, and sapphire. Very monochromatic looks came down the runway: blue crystals on blue silk tulle, red sequins over red silk. And for the finale, it was The Bride--with bridesmaids in tow helping her with her train--which made the "Royal Impact". Look for a princess, countess, any lovely lady with a title--and over $200,000 to fork over for a hand-made Elie Saab Haute Couture wedding gown--to be seen walking down the aisle in this sometime in the future.

Meet The New King and Queen: (left to right) Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of Belgium

In OTHER Royal News (besides William and Kate Baby News!)...After a 20-year reign, 79-year-old King Albert of Belgium voluntarily abdicated the throne this past Sunday, July 21, passing down the crown to his son Philippe and Philippe’s wife, Crown Princess Mathilde. The first Belgian-born queen of the country, Mathilde hails from Bastogne, from a family of nobility: her father was the late Count Patrick d'Udekem d'Acoz, and her mother, Countess Anna Maria Komorowska. As the oldest of five children, Mathilde worked to establish herself early on. She studied speech therapy at Institut Libre Marie Haps and then held her own practice from 1995 until her marriage in 1999. Mathilde is also quite a Fashion Diva (this is why I am really interested!). She loves wearing Armani Prive--the Haute Couture arm of Giorgio Armani with suits beginning at around $40,000 if one were to order them!--as well as Natan, the Belgian fashion brand beloved by many Euro Royals.

The Royal Family: The new King and Queen of Belgium stepped out in front of their subjects for the first time as Belgium's monarchs. Waving to the crowds of well-wishers, Philippe and Mathilde were joined by their four children, Elisabeth, Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eléonore, to mark the historic occasion--The children were dressed in matching outfits: Elisabeth, who is now first in line to the Belgian throne, and Eléonore wore similar cute red dresses and scarlet hair accessories while their brothers, Gabriel and Emmanuel, looked equally as smart in navy blue suits

The Queen's Coronation Gown and Robe--The Queen's Coronation 1953 Exhibition at the Buckingham Palace
Tomorrow, a new Royal Exhibition opens in Buckingham Palace entitled The Queen's Coronation 1953 marking the historic event's 60th anniversary which originally occurred on June 2, 1953. What's on display? Lots of Royal "goodies", including Queen Elizabeth II's dazzling Norman Hartnell Coronation Gown, the magnificent 21-foot Ermine-trimmed purple velvet cape/robe that she wore as well as gowns worn by her immediate family and Maids of Honor. This is the first time all these "Coronation Ensembles" have been on display together.

There are also Royal Diamonds (and other precious jewels) on display:
 Cartier "Halo" tiara

Some of the jewels worn by the royal women are on display, including the diamond Halo tiara worn by Princess Margaret as well as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother--and later loaned by the Queen to the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding in 2011.

The breathtakingNorman Hartnell-designed gown donned by the young monarch on the day she became Queen, along with the 21-foot purple velvet, Ermine-trimmed Coronation Robe are on display at this new exhibition. Queen Elizabeth II's gown incorporated embroidered national and Commonwealth floral emblems in gold, silver and pastel-colored silks, encrusted with pearls, crystals and sequins. The robe of estate, worn when the Queen left the Abbey for the Palace, is of English purple silk-velvet and is more than 21ft (6.5m) long...

The Queen and Her "Girls"--Queen Elizabeth II and her Maids of Honor--1953 Coronation

It took members of the Royal School of Needlework an incredible 3,500 hours to embroider the Queen's robe. Embroidery details include wheat ears and olive branches, representing peace and prosperity. In order to get what was probably the school's most important commission of all time finished for the historic day, the school employed a policy of "never a seat goes cold", ensuring that embroidery was being done every minute of the day.

Heidi Klum and her Multimillion Dollar Models--Project Runway Season 12 Episode 2

This past week's second episode of Lifetime Network's"Project Runway" Season 12 dealt with multimillion dollar jewels --diamonds and precious stones. Miss Heidi introduced the challenge--to design a runway look worthy enough to look fabulous with millions of dollars worth of jewels. Some of the designers did well and some, well, did not. The episode had some DRAMA (naturally). As long as Russian Diva Sandro is still on the show, there's going to be DRAMA. And of course, then there's Unicorn-loving unsustainable Sustainable Milwaukee high-heel wearing Timothy. EVERYWHERE I go, people stop me and relate to me how he--and Miss Sandro--should be gone! They (the fans) are over the drama and over Sustainable Timothy (poor thang!). Well, fans, I have no say in Who's In and Who's Out. But I do agree that those two are getting on my last little nerve as well. Anyhow...Onward to this week's Challenge and Episode:
This Ain't Fun: The Designers on "Project Runway Season 12" with some sour-puss "I Do Not Wanna Be Here" looks...

For this Challenge, the Guest Judge was Eric Daman, "Gossip Girl" Costume Designer

The Runway--Good to Best...
Alexander Pope: Alexander created a chiffon Empire-waisted gown with a satin mini underneath (or
are those hot pants?) that was both slightly Mumsy Maternity and somewhat Yves Saint Laurent--especially with those oversized blouson sleeves). I was neither "here nor there" in terms of if I liked it or did not.

Good--Designers Ken Laurence(left) and Bradon McDonald (right) created very good designs (in my eyes) but yet, these two ended up in the "Safe" section. I liked Ken's blue-green strapless pelum gown--it was very red carpet-ready and fab for the jewels. And Bradon--who we all know is THE judges' Pet Boy Toy--did a great job with this silver sequin looking gown. Was it "blah" in terms of its design? Yes, it was pretty safe. Therefore, it ended up in that group.

Dom Streater: Dom was considered one of the Best of the group and was in the Top Two. Her green and ivory printed hi-lo gown was well received by the judges. I liked it but not as much as the judges did; she was two minutes away from being a tacky mistress of a Russian Arms Dealer at a Cannes Yacht Party. Just sayin'. Especially with that head "scarf"/tie.

Kate Pankoke: Little Kate won with this silver-gray taffeta draped gown with corseted top. It was very Vivienne Westwood (photo on the right) meets-Dior. Should she have won? After looking at all the other ones. Probably. It was very well draped, well made and really highlighted those jewels in a Modern Marie Antoinette sort of way.

The UGH!!!
Helen Castillo: Helen--Miss "I AM the Evening Gown Queen!" could not make a bust cup to save her life. She says she has interned/worked for Special Occasion/Bridal firms and yet, she must have been on a tattoo break when the pattern maker/seamstress wanted to show her how bust cups are made. The whole gown was a mess; too tight (that's why it's lifting and folding up) and those cups:

Tragic and shameful (is that boning sticking out from the edge?). If I was her instructor, this top would get a "D". Speaking of busts...

Karen Batts: Huney, what in the Fashion God's Name is That? And how did this dress NOT end up on the bottom? It's all things WONKY. First, what is with that center front ripply seam at the crotch? And then...

These poking side bustline. This is TOTALLY "Amateur Hour". Again, a "D", for sure. Can we start a "Project Ruwnay Class" taught by yours truly by the way?

Miranda Levy: Miranda loves a pencil skirt. So much so, that's ALL she does. She did THE SAME skirt for the last challenge as well as this one. Next.

Timothy Westbrook: Unicorn-loving Timothy created this blue and ivory velvet gown--very "Downton Abbey"-like. I liked the silhouette but yes, the racer-front neckline: not good to showcase the diamonds darling.

Kahindo Mateene: Kahindo went home for this printed dress above (left). I think the judges were a bit unfairly judgmental toward her design, calling it "off the rack" and "on sale", really? Then why does it look almost THE SAME as the dress I just saw in WWD from Victor Alfaro's new line? (right photo)

For whatever reasons, it was Kahindo's time to bid Goodbye to "Project Runway"...

Here's my MyLifetime.com "Project Runway Blog" Recap for Episode 2...Enjoy!

Diamonds, Divas and Dumpster Diving

Allow me to get something off my semi-hairy chest: it's only the second week of Season 12 and I'm already ANNOYED by some of the designers and my patience is wearing VERY thin on several others. First off, I am SO OVER Timothy and his sustainable shenanigans. Freddie Mercury-lookalike Sandro, and his diva-like drama is making all REAL divas look bad. And then there's tattooed Helen: her crying and, "I've never made bust cups!" but somehow admits to having interned with various bridal design companies is confusing at best. And to cap it off, we've got dreadlock-haired Sue and her, "Can someone thread a bobbin for me?" nonsense. Unless these people prove themselves to be something other than drama-loving nincompoops, it's auf time for them in my eyes. With that off my chest, allow me to discuss this second diamond-loving episode.

Diamond District?
Armored cars pull up at Parsons and big-and-bulky security guards frame the runway stage inside as the designers await what will be the next challenge. Out comes Heidi—with the dreaded Button Bag—followed by the models accessorized in $30 million worth of jewels provided by the Diamond District. Side bar question: is this an area of Manhattan that somehow I missed going to? I know Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, the Upper East Side, Soho, Meat Packing, but the Diamond District? Note to self: must check it out on my next NYC trip!

SOOO Over Diamonds and Money
Heidi announces that for their second challenge, the designers must create a look "glamorous enough" to walk the runway with the jewels the models are wearing. It's not really a "red carpet" challenge but more of "design a look worthy of being accessorized with these multimillion dollar jewels on a runway stage." The button bag is there so the designers chose their models—and jewels—with last week's winner, Bradon, going first. The only highlight of this is how EVERYONE is beyond-excited to be designing for these glorious jewels, except un-sustainable Sustainable Timothy. Naturally, he is not amused by the whole working-with-diamonds challenge; Timothy says that he is not inspired by diamonds or money, for that matter. Wait 'til he has to figure out a way of paying rent.

Mood Dumpster Diving
After getting back to their workrooms, Tim announces to the designers that...

Now, I had no idea (until I arrived) that I would also be introducing--and presenting--the beautiful Brooke Burke-Charvet with this "Inspiration Award" as well as doing my auctioneer duties.

The California Spirits "Gourmet Garden Party" was founded in 1984 by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck along with Barbara Lazaroff, who owns and has designed top restaurants including the original Spago Beverly Hills, and Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures and former president of production at 20th Century Fox.

I was very excited to see that lots of the guests dressed in their best "Summer Elegant' attire for the event (yes, I was secretly doing my own red carpet commentary!) but when I spotted actress and TV icon Heather Locklear, I almost lost it! She looked AMAZING. The event brought out some of the finest LA chefs and winery reserves who set up "booths"--very Haute Cuisine booths-- for the guests to sample some of the best cuisine L.A. restaurants and vintners have to offer.

Speaking of cuisine, guests were treated to LA’s finest cuisine from the kitchens of; Chinois on Main CUT , The Foundry on Melrose, Hotel Bel-Air , Mozza, Nonna of Italy, Patina, Red Seven, RivaBella , Rock Sugar, Spago Beverly Hills, Wolfgang Puck Catering and WP24. Vintners from Bishop's Peak, Bonny Doon Vineyard, Dragonette Cellars, Foxen, Inception, Krupp Brothers, Malibu Vineyards, Rock Sake, Talley Vineyards and Topanga Vineyards were also there.

After all the food (and wine tasting), it was time for me to do the special Cancer Callenge Auction, as well as to introduce and present Brooke Burke-Charvet with the American Cancer Society's "Inspiration Award"--Here are some pics:

I was very honored to be part of such a great event--and like The American Cancer Society says "A World With Less Cancer is a World with More Birthdays". True that.

This past Saturday--along with my partner David Paul--I had the privilege of attending the Opening Night party for the exhibition which was held in the Hope Park adjacent to the FIDM Downtown L.A. campus . The party featured lots of food and the beverage sponsors were Beaulieu Vineyard and Grey Goose Vodka so you know the guests were quite happy. But the real treats were the Costumes, of course. The exhibit features over 120 costumes from 15 shows including...

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Nick Verreos Season 12 Project Runway Recaps: Episode 3 "Coney Island Meltdown"

Last week's Lifetime Network Season 12 "Project Runway" episode had the remaining designers work in teams of two (Oh dear!) as well as create yet another look out of "Unconventional" materials (it's the second Unconventional Challenge in only three weeks into the season!).

Season 12 "Project Runway" designers Karen Batts and Bradon McDonald get their stuffed-toy and plastic alien winnings

The designers were brought to Coney Island Amusement Park to do a Yoplait Yogurt taste-testing shtick (Yoplait is a big sponsor of "Project Runway" so it was a way to tie them in...somehow!). They also ran around the Park playing games and using what they won as the material for their future creations.

This was supposed to be a 'fun" episode--both for the designers and viewers. But, naturally, it ended up being STRESS CENTRAL with two particular teams arguing, verbally fighting and not having fun at all. the twosomes that were not getting along at all were...

Milwaukee Meltdown Twosome: Miranda Levy and Timothy "Unicorn Loving Sustainable" Westbrook

Sandro "The Shouting Diva" Masmanidi and Sue Waller

The Runway Best:

Alexandria von Bromssen and Dom Streater--They designed a great look that payed homage to the "fun" part of this challenge, it was definitely in my Top Two. The minute the look came out, I smiled! Alexandria and Dom both did a fab job of the COMPLETE look--from head to toe. It reminded me of several things including the "mascot" for the Japanese television station NHK, Domo-Kun (above right). But it also was reminiscent of designs from...

Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada (designs above), as well as...

 Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (designs above)

Kate Pankoke and Helen Castillo--Kate and Helen's design was deemed the BEST (and rightly so) by the judges. It might not have as "fun" as Alexandria and Dom's "Harajuku Girl" but it was refined and almost Couture-like in its execution: it was almost completely made out of red straw sombreros!! It could have easily fit into Jean Paul Gaultier's Mexico-inspired Spring 2010 Haute Couture Collection:

Sombrero Señoritas: Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2010 Haute Couture "Mexico Collection"

The "Oh Dear":

Miranda Levy and Timothy Westbrook--The Milwaukee Meltdown Twosome created the worst look from last week with the concoction seen above. It was just SO plastic-y! Poor Timothy was so proud of his yellow vest and the technique he used yet it ended up looking like a shredded life vest.

It was time for little Timothy to take his Sustainable mantra back to Milwaukee--along with his Unicorn Stuffed Toy...

Now, if you wanna know what I REALLY THOUGHT of this entire episode--Keep reading below and my "Project Runway Blog" Recap:

Coney Island Meltdown

Last week on "Project Runway," Kate won with her Vivienne Westwood-looking gown, which best showcased the million-dollar jewels; Helen couldn't make bust cups and cried; Sue couldn't thread a bobbin; Sandro continued being a Diva 2.0; and unicorn-loving Timothy went dumpster diving for fabric at Mood. Oh, and Kahindo was out for a dress deemed too "on sale." After revisiting last week's episode, I now have to question the judges' decision since there were so many others that were more "off-the-rack" looking, and certainly worse in terms of construction (hello extended-bust Karen!). With that all in the pot, let's discuss this week's "light and frothy" challenge that turned out to be nothing but drama, drama, drama.

Klum Wake-Up Call
For some reason, Heidi wakes the designers up at 5:30 a.m. in their Refinery Hotel rooms. A) I can't believe they got Miss Heidi up that early for this scene, and B) What sense did it make since we subsequently found out that she wasn't even part of the challenge announcement, which occurred hours later? Moving on. After their early-morning wake-up call, the designers head over to the Coney Island Boardwalk, where they are greeted by Tim Gunn and Dave Smetter, VP of Marketing Communications for Yoplait Frozen Yogurt.

Not-So-Sweet Yoplait Teams
The designers have to give out Yoplait Frozen Yogurt samples to passersby, collect descriptive words from the yogurt-tasters describing their tasting experience, and then choose three of those descriptive words to inspire their runway creations. Designers will be paired up in teams of two. Welcome to the FIRST team challenge. Poor Miss Kate, who just got off an entire season of team challenges...
