It's officially the start of International Beauty Pageant Season!!! To begin all the Sashes and Tiaras fabulousness is the Miss Grand International 2017 beauty pageant which is occurring in Vietnam with the Final Crowning Night taking place on October 25th. A couple of nights ago were the much-awaited Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition. The 76 contestants--from all over the world--from Argentina to Wales--showcased costumes representing their nations, islands and territories...

Fantasy Fab: (L to R) Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita, Miss Grand India Anukriti Gusain and Miss Grand Laos Chinnaly Gorasing--Miss Grand International 2017 National costume Competition

Flora and Fauna: (L to R) Miss Grand Argentina Yoana Don, Miss Grand Panama Andrea  Torres and Miss Grand Peru Maria Jose Lora--Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition

These costumes ranged from Traditional and Festive, "Victoria's Secret"-like feathered Pre-Columbian Goddesses to Fantasy Couture and they did not disappoint in terms of visual costume candy for pageant lovers everywhere! The pageant organizers are allowing EVERYONE around the world to vote for their favorite by Liking and Sharing the individual photos on the Official Miss Grand International Facebook page HERE.

Traditional Couture: (L to R) Miss Grand Ecuador Analia Vernaza, Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer, Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen May Tran Nguyen--Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition

The Top 15 Liked & Shared contestants/costumes will then move on for another round of voting until the BEST NATIONAL COSTUME (or the one with the most votes!) will be announced on the final night (October 25th). Now, I don't have to wait until then because here are MY TOP 15 Favorite National Costumes from Miss Grand International 2017, beginning with my FAVORITE:
1. Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita--One word: WOW. Leave it to Indonesia to BRING IT when it comes to national costumes at beauty pageants. Lately their representatives have been seriously upping their Costume Couture game! This UBER intricate costume needs A LOT of explanation...

Indonesian Empress: Miss Grand Indonesia 2017 National Costume

According to Miss Grand Indonesia 2017, her national costume is entitled "MOTHERLAND: The Sky is my Father, and The Earth is my Mother" and it was designed by Morphacio and Maya RatihThis costume has the meaning of a circular shape taken from the base form of the Moon and its about the mother figure, the queen, and the woman. Here are some more details:
*The blue color depicts the glory of Indonesia as a Maritime Country.
*Five blue crystals in the circle of the moon symbolize the harmony of Indonesian people in the ideology of Pancasila.
*The three blue crystals on the headdress symbolize the perfection of body, soul, and spirit.
*Five yellow crystals depict the young generation are like buds of the nation which is the hope and successor/future of the nation...

Now THAT is a TRAIN: Miss Grand Indonesia 2017 National Costume

*The wings on the shoulders symbolize the tenderness and strength, the prayers and the songs of the ancestors.
*The backbone symbolizes Indonesia is the "backbone of the World" where Indonesia holds abundant natural wealth and Indonesia is a very influential country in the world political map.
*The wing belt symbolizes fertility and a close brotherhood. Fingers and right arm describe the wisdom, skill and soul that protect the society.
*The temple symbolizes "our bodies are temples, our bodies are His temple", as well as Indonesian people from various social and cultural backgrounds to individuals seeking self-enlightenment.
*And finally, five Nusantara fabrics illustrate the cultural diversity in Indonesia which contain the thoughts and philosophy that accompany the journey of the Indonesian people to be a whole person, as a true person.
Regardless of all this very detailed costume description...for me, it translates into THE BEST ONE of the competition! I loved how impacting it was, the colors, the unique shapes...it was a work of fashion art!

Moving on...my other Favorites in my Top 15 List are:
2. Miss Grand India Anukriti Gusain--Anukriti's gorgeous costume was my second favorite of the 76 contestants. The theme for this look was "Evolution and Expansion of Indian Royalty, from the Palace to the workplace". The national costume--designed by Melvyn Dominic Noronha--according to the contestant herself, shows the balance of an Indian woman with her delicate beauty of compassion and the strength of her determination. She goes on to say that the design also shows how through the evolution of time, the spirit of a few queens magnified and today every Indian woman is a queen in her own right. I loved how this costume combined traditional Indian dress with Hindu God-like imagery. I also thought the combination of bold gold/blue/red colors made for a very strong stage impact.

3. Miss Grand Laos Chinnaly Norasing--This national costume is inspired by the Great Golden Stupa Pha That Luang in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. The Great Golden Stupa Pha That Luang is an ancient and important architecture of Laos, and is a center for the spirit of the Lao people. The design of the costume is a unique feature and character of the Buddha image, adapted to the composition of the ensemble. The jewelry was also inspired by the shape of the Buddha image. The color and the various embellishments added to this costume present Lao's cultures, customs and unique identity. I thought it was thoroughly impacting, very striking and made for a stand-out costume presence at the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition. I am still so baffled how any of these costumes get packed and shipped through customs and onto a plane and then reassembled to be worn again!

Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer (top photos) in her "Manta Guajira" National Costume and (lower photos) Wayuu Guajiras and their Mantas (caftan dresses)

4. Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer-- Tulia's costume represents the Manta (or caftan/tunic/dress) Wayuu Guajira, a Native American ethnic group of the Guajira peninsula of  northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. The brightly colored costume featured the designs and pom-pom accents commonly seen on these Wayuu Guajira caftan/tunics worn by the women of this South American indigenous group.

Sketch of Miss Grand Venezuela Talia Aleman Ferrer's National Costume--designed by Colombian designer/brand Aikaa by Blanca Fernandez

This was also one of my top favorites of all the 76 contestants for the way she showed it onstage and how colorful and striking it was. I also loved the representation and homage of an indigenous group through this beautiful costume. The design was created by Colombian designer/brand Aikaa by Blanca Fernanadez.

5. Miss Grand Panama Andrea Torres--Andrea wore a Pre-Columbian (before Christopher Columbus) Feathered Empress-like costume to represent her nation of Panama. And I LOVED it! There were several of these feathered-and-sequined looks in the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costumes Competition, and yet this was THE MOST IMPACTING of the bunch! The design was created by Panamanian designer Cristo Athanasiadiswho is known for these types of pageant costumes...and he's obviously very good at it! I loved the colors, the sequins, the feathers...well, I just loved EVERYTHING! Muy bien Cristo and Muy bien Andrea!

Vietnam Queen: Miss Grand Vietnam 2017 Huyen My Tran Nguyen in her Ao Dai Traditional National Costume for Miss Grand International 2017

Sketch of Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen Tran Nguyen's National Costume for Miss Grand International 2017

6. Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen My Tran Nguyen--I absolute ADORED this costume worn by Miss Grand Vietnam 2017 Huyen My Tran Nguyen. The costume represents a traditional Ao Dai and is inspired by the patterns of the Hue Imperial Citadel in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue. It took 3 months to create this gorgeous 30 kilograms (about 66 pounds!)-weighing costume and it was designed by Vietnamese designer Ngo Nhat Huy. If you get to see the video of the actual Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition (at the end of this post!), you can fast forward to when she comes on and showcases this gorgeous costume. I especially loved how the sleeve brocade print/design mitered (matched) when she put her arms/hands together.

Viva Mexico: Miss Grand Mexico Yoana Gutierrez in her National Costume at the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition

A young Tehuana de Oaxaca in traditional dress--Oaxaca Mexico

7. Miss Grand Mexico Yoana Gutierrez--Yoana wore this very beautiful and colorful "Tehuana de Oaxaca" traditional costume, worn by the indigenous women of the city Tehuantepec in the Mexican state of Oaxaca (think Frida Kahlo). The design itself paid tribute to the traditional dress and at the same time, had enough Fashion with a Capital "F" impact and stage fabulousness to make it into my Top 15 Favorites.

8. Miss Grand Jamaica Jenaae Jackson--Jenaae stated on her Instagram that in this costume, she is a "depiction of a Jamaican Arawak Queen"  and all I have to say is "Go On Girl!". I absolutely loved this costume for its colorful, feathered and sequined glory! It looked well-done, finished and high-end. I really admired the stunning jeweled sequins on her bandeau top and skirt yoke and I also liked the muted green feathered skirt. This "Arawak Queen" is UBER Costume Fabulous!

9. Miss Grand Sri Lanka Visna Fernando--Miss Grand Sri Lanka wore this golden "Lion"-inspired costume for the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition. The costume was inspired (obviously) by the "Ceylon Lion" seen in the Sri Lankan flag. I thought it was impressive, sexy-hot and stage impacting enough to be one of my Top 15 Favorites! The headdress alone was EVERYTHING! I just wished those nude pump/heels were a little more "designed" as opposed to looking as if she went online and bought a pair of heels and just added them to the costume.

10. Miss Grand Cambodia Kea Khloem: This was another gorgeous showing from an Asian contestant at the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition. Kea's costume was inspired by Cambodian Buddhist temples and the types of traditional dress of the country. I thought this design looked rich, well-made and the different shades of gold were very striking onstage.

11. Miss Grand Philippines Elizabeth Durado Clenci--"Last night for the national costume competition I chose to represent an indigenous tribe from the south of Philippines," Clenci wrote on her Instagram, sharing a photo of her intricately made headdress. The ensemble which she wore as her national costume for the Miss Grand International 2017 was designed by Jearson Demavivas. This dress was inspired by the T’boli tribe and is a representation of a modern T’boli princess in haute couture and their uniquely designed guitar called hegulung. Philippine’s T’boli takes pride on its T’nalak fabric which designs are spawned from the dreams of the weavers. The design of this national costume represents the cultural structure of the T’boli tribe along with the colors and intricate beadwork, which speaks of their careful yet impressive art. I thought Elizabeth looked sexy, chic and still "National Costume Diva Traditional" in this design. It wasn't out-of-this-world impacting like Miss Grand Indonesia or Miss Grand India, Miss Grand Laos...but, it was still Costume Couture Runway Fab.
12. Miss Grand Argentina Yoana Don--Yoana wore this sequined and feathered "Fantasy Showgirl"-like costume representing the city of Corrientes which is the Argentinian national capital of Carnival (Carnaval). The gorgeous costume--which ended up being one of my Top 15 Favorites--was designed and created by Marcelo Pendola who creates many of the Miss Argentina national costumes for international pageants. I LOVED the golden crystal sequined applique, the strawberry red feathers...the leg sequined accessories...it was all MUY BELLO and MUY FAB.
13. Miss Grand Peru Maria Jose Lora--The Pavo Real Blanco (white peacock) is in danger of extinction in the South American Amazon and was the inspiration for Miss Grand Peru 2017's national costume. The beautiful costume was designed by Peruvian designer Beto Pinedo. Of all the "Pre-Columbian/Victoria's Secret Feathered Divas"...this one was definitely one of my faves. Therefore, it need to be in my Top 15 List! It meshed both the bird inspiration with sexy stage presence. If there was any critique...yes, it would be the shoes., If you're going to create a gorgeous and intricate costume, create the shoes as well! Those need to be silver and sequined and fabulous. Right now, they are just $25 nude pumps from the internet!

14. Miss Grand Paraguay Lia Duarte Ashmore--Miss Grand Paraguay decided to give "Indigenous Tribal Couture/Making a Statement" Costume. The lovely Lia wore a hi-lo design which,  at first glance, gave the viewer an Angelic/Runway model vibe. Then, as one got more focused, you could see the "Stop Chaco Deforestation" and "Stop the Violence" marking on her arms. The costume is inspired by the "Allegory of the Pajaro Campana", a white bird with green-hued beak and face (lower photo, above). In addition to this, the look seems to be suggesting the dangers of deforestation and this ivory tull'ed "Couture Angel" coming to save the human destruction. I thought it was impacting and thoughtful enough to make my list. It would have almost too obvious to add wings to this costume a la "Miss Grand Peru", "Miss Grand Panama", so I like this more "runway" direction.

15. Miss Grand Ecuador Analia Vernaza Daulon--Analia's costume was a traditional Ecuadorian costume designed by Maria Isabel Diaz Design  . I loved the colors, the high-lo style of the dress/skirt section and overall impact of the design. If there was any critique, once again, it would be THE SHOES! The costume looked fab but the shoes seemed like an afterthought.

Those were MY TOP 15 Favorite Costumes from the Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Competition...Let me know which ones were YOUR favorites!

Well kids, it is indeed the start of the "International Pageant Season"! Last week, I discussed my TOP 15 FAVORITES for the Miss Grand International 2017 which is happening in Vietnam (Read HERE!)...and at the same time in another Asian country--this time the Philippines--the Miss Earth 2017 beauty pageant is happening. The 17th edition of the Miss Earth contest is occurring with 87 contestants from all over the world competing for the coveted crown with the Final Crowning Night taking place on November 4th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Metro Manila Philippines.

Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competition Group 2 Winners (L to R) Miss Earth Nigeria (bronze), Miss Earth Peru (Gold), Miss Earth Costa Rita and Miss Earth Philippines (Silver) flanked by the reining Miss Earth 2016 from Ecuador Katherine Espin (second from left)--Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competition Group 2

In advance of the final night, lots of pre-final pageant event competitions are occurring including the Swimsuit, Resorts  Wear, Talent and the one that I am most interested in (naturally!) here in my "Sashes & Tiaras" BLOG: The EVENING GOWN COMPETITION. The "Long Gown Competition" as it is called (as opposed to "Short Gown"??) is happening in separate sections with 3 different contestant groups competing...

Satins and Sequins: Contestants from Group 2 of Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competition--Joy-Nostalg Hotel and Suites Manila Philippines

In each of these contests, the top contestants get medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) which will give them points helping them gain better spots in the Finals (similar to Miss "World" I am guessing).
The first "Long Gown Competition" occurred on Tuesday night with "Group 2" consisting of 29 ladies. The winner (or Best in Long Gown)--according to the judges--was Miss Earth Peru, with the Silver going to Miss Earth Costa Rica and Miss Earth Philippines and the Bronze going to Miss Earth Nigeria.

Good Gowns or Not-so-Muchee? Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competition Group 2 Contestants

There's no way of beating around the bush: I do not know who the judges were but...I did not agree so much with the Top Four (well, only just one!)...so, as it has become a tradition here in my BLOG, below are MY TOP Favorites of the Group (Top 10) and five that were just A MESS. Before I show you my list, I have to say that these were not a group of UBER FAB Couture Gals. I know this isn't Miss Universe or Miss World and therefore these contestants might not have the caliber of design and money backing them so I did give a little "slack" for that but still...as a fashion designer/pageant fan/red carpet commentator, I had to "judge" adequately.

Here's my Top 10 Best from Number One to Ten:

1. Miss Earth Nigeria Eucharia Akani: OK, first of all,, is it A LOT? Yes. But, is it still really kind of fabulous? DOUBLE YES! I like this for many reasons: It looks AMAZING and impacting. She looks like a PERFECT beauty queen. It fits well. The length is also PERFECTION and to-the-floor! The silver is on-point and just right for her skin color. I love it. I would have given her THE GOLD!
Score: 9.15

2. Miss Earth Angola: Ermelinda Demantos: Loved this look from head to (almost) toe. The blush/golden colored shimmering gown was red carpet perfect, looked refined and well-made and not so "fire friendly" (some of the other gowns were MAJOR polyester-get-near-a-match-and-they'll light up messes!). I really liked her slicked back hair but...those UBER-stacked heels (is that what I see peaking from the center front slit?) are really not making me happy! PLEASE Ermelinda, dump those things and go for non-platform strappy heels (and just have a seamstress hem-up your gown. ASAP.
Score: 9.00

3. Miss Earth Colombia Juliana Franco: I liked the blue color, the one shoulder-like silhouette and nude illusion insets. Was this a but "Figure Skating Costume"? TOTALLY. But, listen, compared to a lot of the other gowns I saw here, this was VERY NICE. TRUST ME! It fit well, wasn't so tacky, wasn't HOOCHIE, had stage presence, the length was correct and her hair was modern and not so "Pageant Betty".
Score: 8.98

 4. Miss Earth Spain Ainara de Santamaria: I liked this gown and it was one of my favorites of this group for its simplicity, non "cray-cray" detail and pure and elegant fit. I also liked the emerald and light green sequined detail. Oh, and yes, the length was JUST RIGHT! It was simple, beautiful and impacting.
Score: 8.97

5. Miss Earth England Charlotte Brooke: Miss Earth England wore this golden-hued gown with silver crystals featuring a fitted column gown over a full overskirt. The style was elegant, impacting and almost Paris Haute Couture-like (almost). Her styling, however, was the unfortunately aspect which didn't elevate this gown to a position of fabulousness and grandeur; her hair was droopy, her make-up was inelegant...she looked too simple and "basic" yet her gown was "Red Carpet Cannes Film Festival". I gave her points more for the gown than her personal styling. It was still better than most of the others...even the ones who got some of the Long Gown medals.
Score: 8.70

6. Miss Earth Chile Sofia Manzur: Since I had to pick my Top Ten here in this group, some of these choices were "giving them too much credit". But wait until you see some of my "Uh Oh" choices and you'll understand how this might have been "GREAT!". I liked the red color and the fit was fine. Sofia looked like a Spanish Senorita in a Sevillana Gala. I also loved her slicked back chignon. I wasn't a fan of those CRAZY gold sequined pumps (Ayyy Dios Mio!) and that "Cha-Cha Peek-a-Boo-Danger Zone" super high slit. But, if I just half-closed my eyes and avoided those two things...
Score: 8.20

7. Miss Earth Cameroon Verucha Cossinda: I liked the "mermaid Lite" silhouette of this gown and the color was lovely. I'm also happy about the fit and correct length (no tacky platform pumps showing!). Overall, this was a pretty choice for Miss Earth Cameroon.
Score: 8.10

8. Miss Earth Lebanon Elsa Antoun: Nice gown for Elsa, Miss Earth Lebanon. This black and white "Mermaid" shaped gown featured white appliques and black tulle godets at the bottom. It was nothing extraordinary but at least it fit well, was the right length and there weren't any HOOCHIE too-high slits or breast-a-licious cleavage.
Score: 8.05

9. Miss Earth Pakistan Ramina Ashfaque: Yes darlings, you read right--Miss Earth PAKISTAN! Karachi-born Ramina is competing in the Miss Earth 2017 contest and for the Long Gown Competition, she wore this canary yellow gown. Listen, under any other circumstances (or this was "Miss Universe" or "Miss World" I would have deemed this a "Sherri hill off-the-rack Pageant Betty" you-know-what. However, I think she looked radiant and lovely in this. It fit her well and she made an impact on stage. Was it A LOT of polyester? YES. And would I rather not seen those nude platform pumps? Totally. But, in this group, she was still one of my Top Ten.
Score: 8.00

10: Miss Earth Peru Karen Rojas: Believe it or not (I couldn't!), Karen won the "Gold medal" for this gown in the Miss earth 2017 Long Gown Competition Group 2. I placed her as my TENTH favorite. This was OK but certainly--at least in my eyes--not the BEST. I did like the gold flower appliques over the terracotta-colored illusion netting...and it was A LOOK but...it was verging on tacky-licious. But I had to add a tenth favorite and I decided Miss Earth Peru and her gown would be the one.
Score: 7.99

Now, on to the "Oh-No-She-Didn't: Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competition Group 2 Edition": Her are my "Top Five" Uh Oh's...

Miss Earth Belarus Polli Cannabis: Oh Polli. Bless your heart. While I kind of liked the top part, the bottom half was just a true GOWN MESS; it looked like black and pink toilet paper got stuck in a tornado and created a gown-skirt. I just wish designers would NEVER do that to dresses. Please. It isn't pretty. On a nice note: The length is right and she is pretty.
Score: 6.25

Miss Earth Costa Rica Fernanda Rodriguez: Fernanda somehow nabbed the SILVER medal for this gown. I am at a loss. This is a teal polyester lace/nude/applique mess. The whole too-see-through inner gown is just stripper tacky and the style is so Downtown Los Angeles Santee Alley. I know I sound like a Gown Snob but seriously. On a good note, she looked fresh and young and pretty--from the neck up.
Score: 6.20

Miss Earth France Melissa Strugen: Melissa wore this violet colored gown featuring golden scroll applique and chiffon overskirt. The gown (inexplicably) featured a mini dress lining underneath showing through. The entire look was not cute. And her hair styling and makeup did not help. I kind of get what she was going for--perhaps a "Near Eastern Goddess" but she ended up looking like a "Prom Scheherazade".
Score: 6.20

Miss Earth Hungary Victoria Viczian: It's the "Miss Earth 2017" Beauty Pageant...and while I can understand that sponsorship may be light and you have to buy your own dress possibly from the sale rack in Budapest, this off white Duchesse Satin style was just...TOO BASIC! I am happy that it was the correct length but seriously, Victoria wasn't even trying. This is a Bridesmaid Dress for a wedding. NOT, the gown you wear for THE MISS EARTH 2017 LONG GOWN COMPETITION!
Score: 6.00

Last but not least...
Miss Earth Slovenia Sara Gavranic: Oh Slovenia. Oh Sara. Just look at this: Gold Stretch. Lycra. Draped and hi-lo. Oh wait..is that lace in the back??? How do you say "tacky-licious" in Slovenian? On a nice note, I liked her hair and red lipstick.
Score: 5.50

A Costume Repeat? Maybe...Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan at the 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Moscow Russia

This past weekend was the first of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Season 2017-2018 international competition events: The Rostelecom Cup of Russia. It was held at the Megasport arena in Moscow Russia. Disciplines in Ladies, Mens, Pairs as well as Ice Dance were on display and the winners of these disciplines earn points to qualify them for the 2017-18 Grand Prix Final...

GOOOO JAPAN!!! Even though the Grand Prix of Russia was held in...Russia, the Megasport Arena was PACKED with the very supportive Japanese fans. Thousands traveled to Russia to cheer on their Japanese skaters, especially Yuzury Hanyu. God bless the Japanese fans, they seem to be keeping the ISU and figure skating afloat many, many thousands of fans at a time!

Now, let's get to the IMPORTANT STUFF: THE COSTUMES!!! As you may know, I love discussing and reviewing the figure skating costumes here on my "Ice Style" blog so let's get started with my Recap of the 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Costumes: MEN. I will follow with separate blogs on LADIES, PAIRS and ICE DANCE...

MEN:
Nathan Chen of USA: First of all: Nathan is a QUAD wunderkind!! What I am not so impressed with are his costumes. This all black dress shirt and pants look is what he wore as his "costume" for his Short Program to Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine. I get that the music is sweeping, jazzy, modern...so a sleek all black costume is appropriate but...THIS? Nathan looks like...

The WAITSTAFF at a party!! It's not particularly the all black that I have a problem with, if done right, it can be quite beautiful and interesting...take a look at these examples:

BETTER: (L to R) Jeremy Abbott at 2011 Cup of China, Evan Lysacek at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Max Aaron and his "Carmen" costume at 2013 US Championships--Nathan doesn't have to look like the "hired help" at a party. Just saying.

Free Skate to Mao's Last Dancer (soundtrack) by Christopher Gordon: And kids, it didn't get any better for his Free Skate costume. An indigo blue colored dress shirt (Oh, what a shock!! Color!!). The music is this sweeping score from the film depicting a ballet life of Li Cunxin taken from his early life in rural China to end up defecting to the US. Even the "costume" in the movie's poster is more exciting:

I REALLY REALLY HOPE that these are just "in transition" looks and that his REAL COSTUMES are being made as I type this. PLEASE I hope I am right! I am in AWE of Nathan Chen's multi-quads. His "costumes" leave A LOT to be desired.

Mikhail Kolyada of Russia: Russia's Kolyada skated his Short program to Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Tango. I loved this. Now, this is something I wished Nathan would have worn. It was sleek, fit him well and had enough "costume" excitement but not too much.

Free Skate to Steamroller Blues, Can't Help Falling In Love, Rip It Up by Elvis Presley--Mikhail did Elvis proud with an interpretation of one of his famous costume looks (seen above from his 1972 concert). I liked the details, the obvious homage to the original costume with the front torso details. This was another nice costume for the young Russian.

Denis Ten of Kazakhstan: Denis skated his Short Program Tu Sei by Vittorio Grigolo in this look above. The outfit consisted of black pants and a wrap-style white embroidered shirt. It gave hints of a classical opera tenor with a little bit of funky style. I especially liked the caviar beaded-like "thread" applique seen in the lower photo above.

Free Skate to SOS d'un terrain by Dimash Kudaibergen: Denis skated his Free Skate to his famous song done by a fellow Kazakh artist. Ten's costume was a sleek, modern look that included silver sequin embellishments as well as chiffon volants/mini-ruffles. Overall, it was a good costume for the beautiful and deep-meaning song. If there was any critique, I don't think he needed the crystal-detailed waist. Otherwise, it was just fine.

Grant Hochstein of USA: Grant skated his Free Skate to Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber in this midnight blue costume featuring violet, blue and silver crystals highlighting his upper torso. I liked that this was not so overtly a reference to Phantom and that he didn't have any gimmicky faux mask anywhere...

The slight peeking of white ruffles gave enough of a nod to the Phantom's blouse (seen on actor Gerard Butler above with director Joel Schumacher in the 2004 movie version ) which was nice.

Misha Ge of Uzbekistan: Misha Ge wore this lilac top and black pants costume for his Free Skate to Meditation (from "Thais") by Jules Massenet. The look was a bit "subdued" from some of Misha's past costume looks but it was lovely. The color added delicacy to his skate and I liked the ruffled sleeve cuffs. I just wish the neckline didn't have that mini panel of nude illusion (WHY??) and I would have rather seen a more plunging neckline. Maybe not Max Aaron plunging but a little more than that above. It seemed a bit "Junior Skater" to me.

Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan: Yuzuru skated his Short Program to Ballade No. 1 by Frederic Chopin. If this sounds familiar, it is because it's almost like "Groundhog's Day: The Figure Skating Edition" when it comes to Hanyu, his Short program AND his costumes. For this 2017-18 Olympic Season, Hanyu has gone back to the same Short Program Music and (almost) the same Costume that he used for the 2014-15, 2015-16 Seasons...

Costume Adjustments: MINOR adjustments to the same costume--(L to R) 2014-15, 2015-2016 and now. The "new & Improved" version includes basically the same ombre-dyed blouson top with crystals but gold beading was added to the mock-neckband. He also used the same gold cummerbund as in the previous season. I think this is kind of lazy costuming if you ask me. It's an OK costume but it would have been WONDERFUL to have seen something COMPLETELY NEW! As a Fashion Designer and costume enthusiast, I selfishly want something NEW and EXCITING!

Free Skate to Seimei (soundtrack) by Shigeru Umebayashi: For his Free Skate, Yuzuru also went back to a previous Free Skate Program from a couple of seasons ago. He also used the (almost) same costume but with minor sequin adjustments.

Yuzuru Hanyu's costume for his 2015-2016 Season Free Skate

Once again, I liked the original (above photo), especially with the music but I am just baffled why he didn't just have a BRAND NEW design and style made??!! We all know he has the MILLIONS to get it done so why??!! Maybe he is superstitious and somehow feels that he should wear the same (or almost the same) to bring him luck??? Who knows...

I know that I probably would have rather seen him in a cute Pooh Bear Costume instead...or this fab little stretch velvet number on this darling little Russian boy!

"Please Let Me Win Gold!'--Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva closes hers eyes as she begins her Short Program at this weekend's 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition, Moscow Russia

It's Grand Prix of Figure Skating Season!!! (as well asInternational Pageant Season! What a coincidence!). The first one is the 2017-18 Rostelecom Cup of Russia, held in Moscow over the weekend. In my previous post HERE, I discussed my thoughts on the MEN'S COSTUMES--and Yuzuru Hanyu's (almost) Costumes Repeats. Now, it's time to review the LADIES!

The Necklines Win!--Bedazzled necklines of some of the ladies' costumes seen at the 2017-18 Rostelecom Cup of Russia Grand Prix of Figure Skating: (Clockwise, L to R) Mirai Nagasu(USA), Mariah Bell(USA) and Wakaba Higuchi(Japan)

Carolina Kostner of Italy: Italy's Carolina Kostner is BAAAACK! And kids, she is looking quite good! For her Short Program to Ne me quitte pas by Jacques Brel, performed by Celine Dion, she wore this Cabernet red colored costume which was simple, romantic and right for the iconic song. The red evoked passion, heart (notice the sweetheart neckline!)...while the oversized jeweled "straps" have a slight look of a delicately detailed gown. This costume was beautiful. in it's sublime qualities.

Free Skate to L'apres-midi d'un faun by Claude Debussy: For her Free Skate, Carolina wore this lilac-hued costume which honored the music and Nijinski ballet. I LOVED the leaf-like gathered tulle details and crystals that highlighted the upper torso. Nicely done Carolina!

Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia: Evgenia is an INCREDIBLE skater. SUPER INCREDIBLE. No one can touch her. She has matured with her skating and she has matured with her costumes. For her Short Program to Nocturne by Frederic Chopin, she wore this gray, blue and ombre lilac costume. I thought this was just gorgeous; it looked as if it cost $5,000 if not more!

Free Skate to Anna Karenina (soundtrack) by Dario Marianelli: I also loved this costume which Evgenia wore to her "Anna Kerenina" Free Skate. The design was chic, sexy and different. I liked the black and silver sequin applique highlighted throughout the costume and I especially liked the see-through stretch chiffon in the back, sides and skirt. I am usually not a fan of those finger-less gloves but here, it worked--both with the "Period" theme of the music and the rest of her costume.

Mariah Bell of the USA: Mariah skated her Short Program to Roxie (Chicago soundtrack) performed by Renee Zellweger and All That Jazz (Chicago soundtrack) by John Kander, Fred Ebb. This was the same music and costume Mariah wore for last year/season's Short Program which I LOVED in my Costumes Review of 2016 Skate America HERE. So yeah...I still love it! It's jazzy, excellent for the music and really gives extra vibrancy to her skate. The silver jeweled sequins + the skirt fringe=FABULOUS!

Free Skate to West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein: For her Free Skate, she went "Sequined Maria" in her costume. And I loved it! The halter neckline costume featured a red base fabric with lots of multicolored sequins that looked AMAZING especially near her neck. I love the dripping bugle beads from the neck and the combination of red and purple. This was a very nice costume and well designed.

Mirai Nagasu of USA--Mirai skated her Short Program to Nocturne No. 20 in C Sharp Minor by Frederic Chopin. This was the same music as last season's Short Program as well as the same costume...

Mirai Nagasu at 2016 Skate Canada International (above photos)--I really liked this costume then and naturally, I still do. Would I have wished she might have "changed" the costume just a teeny-tiny bit? Maybe. But, this is so outstanding that heck, why not? Give it a second run! Since is the first event of the season, I'm kinda hoping these repeat program gals and guys will at least give us a switch in costumes. One can only hope!

Free Skate to Miss Saigon by Claude-Michel Schönberg: The minute I saw this red costume, I just knew it was "Miss Saigon". The red cheongsam silhouette, the Mandarin collar, the intricate silver and gold crystals...all added up to a very pretty costume perfect for this music. I especially liked how the sequins were put on to highlight her upper torso as well as almost "draw" a sweetheart neckline bustier.

Kaori Sakamoto of Japan: Kaori skated her Short Program to Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven and wore this blue ombre-dyed costume. the design featured a gathered one shoulder-like design plus lots of silver sequins throughout the garment. It was pretty and expensive-looking.

Free Skate to Amelie (soundtrack) by Yann Tiersen: For her Free Skate to "Amelie" she wore this olive-colored design. It was drab as drab can be. I get the connection to "Amelie" with the color and mini "Peter Pan" collar but this just didn't have enough of that figure skating costume "razzle dazzle" needed to make an impact and this is one of the most unflattering colors one could possibly choose. It was SAD; she looked like she was playing a refugee from a war-torn land.

Wakaba Higuchi of Japan: Japan's Wakaba Higuchi wore this costume for her Short Program to Gypsy Dance by Leon Minkus and I loved it! The strawberry red costume featured gold, silver and emerald jeweled sequins as well as feathers which framed her shoulders and upper torso beautifully. I especially loved the jeweled sunburst in the center front bust. Wakaba did look like a gypsy...and a very fashionable and fabulous one!

Free Skate to Skyfall (James Bond soundtrack) performed by Adele: For her Free Skate, she also made me very happy with this indigo blue colored costume as she skated to "Skyfall". LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the entire look--from her sleek chignon, the silver crystal neck...to those AMAZING oversized jeweled stones on her upper torso. Her costume literally looks as if the stars in the sky...fell!

Mae Berenice Meite of France: France's Mae Berenice Meite is know for her costumes, and also, being a lover of jumpsuits/bodysuits. She did not disappoint for what she wore for her 2017-18 Season's Short Program to Halo by Beyonce, cover version by Jasmin Thompson
Who Run the World by Beyonce. The halter neckline jumpsuit featured a STUNNING display of gold jeweled sequins on her upper torso which really gave me goosebumps! Seriously...take a look at those photos above! THAT, my dear readers is what a top level figure skating looks like! The costume--I assume--was inspired by these looks from Miss Beyonce:

Beyonce in DSquared2 at the Super Bowl Halftime Show (Left) and in Roberto Cavalli for her "Formation" Tour

Free Skate to Les Nocturnes de Chopin and Happy by C2C: For her Free Skate, Mae Berenice wore this black and white costume featuring a very "Lady-like" Peter Pan collar, and tuxedo-like shirt and cummerbund ensemble. I thought this was pretty "safe" especially knowing what Mae Berenice has worn before. It was very un-Mae Berenice. I was like "OK, this is soooooo not her!". And then, halfway through her program...

She did an "outfit change" of sorts and flipped her wrap skirt flap and exposed multi-colored jeweled shorts! While, yes, it was arguably a bit gimmicky and possibly semi-tackylicious...I still LOVED IT! Now THAT'S the Mae Berenice Meite I was looking for!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminary EVENING GOWNS: My Top 20 + 5 "Oh Dear!"

This Wednesday night are the Finals of the2017 Miss Grand International Beauty Pageant, taking place on October 25th in Vietnam. Sunday night was the very important Miss Grand International Preliminary Competition, done in advance of the Finals in a very "Miss Universe"-like manner, showcasing all the 77 contestants from around the world competing in Swimsuit and Evening Gowns in front of a panel of judges. Last week, I discussed my TOP FAVORITE National Costumes of 2017 Miss Grand International which in case you missed, you can check out HERE. Now it's time for my TOP 15 BEST Gowns from the Preliminaries of 2017 Miss Grand International.

Asian Gown Divas: (L to R) Miss Grand Philippines Elizabeth Clenci, Miss Grand China Xuejiao Chen, Miss Grand Malaysia Sanjeda John and Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita--Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition

Latina Gown Fab: (L to R) Miss Grand Bolivia Mariem Suarez, Miss Grand Peru Maria Jose Lora, Miss Grand Paraguay Lia Duarte Ashmore, Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer--Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition

I have to say that I was VERY IMPRESSED with the STRONG batch of contestants this year at the 2017 Miss Grand International pageant. In regards to the gowns, I was impressed at how UBER FAB a lot of them were. While there were some clunkers/Oh Dear's--for many of them, these were gowns that one would normally only see at a TOP TOP Pageant such as Miss Universe, full of DRAMA, Diva-like back capes, mostly well-fitting and expensive-looking sequin work.

Africa and Europe Gown Queens: (L to R) Miss Grand South Sudan Eyga Mojus, Miss Grand Ukraine Snizana Tanchuk, Miss Grand Sweden Maja Westlin, Miss Grand Belarus Panova Maria Desinovna--Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition

The See-through trend was EVERYWHERE and it is obviously here to stay. Some did it right and some well, showed too much Boob Cups! Also, some of these gowns looked better in video as opposed to photos, but you'll have to watch the Preliminaries (at end of this post) to judge for yourself...
So with all that said, here are my TOP 15 BEST and some of my "Oh Dear!' beginning with my Favorite...

1. Miss Grand Peru Maria Jose Lora: My NUMBER ONE BEST GOWN choice is Miss Grand Peru in this golden/nude shimmering gown from Maritza Mendoza Atelier. When Maria Jose walked out, I think I lost my breath...for like ONE ENTIRE MINUTE! In fact, I almost became STRAIGHT! OK, not really! But seriously, she looked STUNNING. The gown fit her to perfection, she looked super sexy but not vulgar and the gold and silver jeweled sequins were luxe and expensive...

The gown reminded me of the dress worn by "Miss Universe France" Iris Mittenaere when she won "Miss Universe" (photo above). Will Maria Jose win "Miss Grand International" in this golden/nude sequined gown now? We'll see..
Gown Score: 9.99

2. Miss Grand China Xuejiao Chen: My second BEST GOWN of the night was worn by the statuesque Miss Grand China. This was a SUPER impacting gown--also in that golden/nude color scheme as "Miss Grand Peru", but this one was ALL about stage presence and "Working The Runway"! The design featured a gold sequined column gown with a dramatic feathered-and-sequin cape. It was all fabulous. Including her modeling and chic center-part hairstyle.
Score: 9.97

3. Miss Grand Malaysia Sanjeda John: One word: WOW! First off, Sanjeda is just so exotically GORGEOUS! Now, onto the gown: I loved how the canary yellow color of this gown--designed and created by Javier Ramos Monteron/JRM Couture--looked against her skin tone. The mermaid shaped gown fit her to an 1/8th of an inch of her body and she ooozed sensuality as well as Pageant Gown Perfection.
Score: 9.97

4. Miss Grand Philippines Elizabeth Durado Clenci: Elizabeth wore my 4th Favorite Gown of the night. I thought this was elegant, modern and super chic! The gown was designed by Benj Leguiaband featured that very on-Pageant-Trend golden/nude/blush coloring, beautifully placed vertical "striped" sequins and hugged her perfect figure. The sleek hairstyle mimicked the sleekness of the gown. Well done!
Score: 9.5

5. Miss Grand Lithuania Irmina Preisegalaviciute: This was another "WOW" moment during the Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition. Irmina walked onto the stage and literally SHUT IT DOWN! She wore this fit-and-flare ivory colored column gown which featured a vertical nude illusion panel down the center front of the dress strewn with a gorgeous array of crystals. From head to toe, she looked like a contestant of a "Ru Paul's Drag Race" Pageant Challenge...and one that she would have won--wearing this!
Score: 9.45

If you think you may have seen this gown before? You are correct:
The Gown That Goes Around The World: The same white Valentina Cedeño gown design as seen on (L to R) Miss Apure 2014 Skarliz Coa in the Miss Venezuela 2014 competition; Miss Rhode Island USA 2015 Anae Garcia competing at the Miss USA 2015 contest in Baton Rouge Louisiana, and Isabella Santiago Miss Gay Venezuela, who won the Miss International Queen 2014 title in Thailand

6. Miss Grand Myanmar Aye Chan Moe: On my 6th Best Gown Position, I placed Miss Grand Myanmar. I loved this white sequined gown. It was elegant, not Hoochie (no super high slit or cha-cha breast cleavage in sight!) and fit her well. The gown featured beautiful sequin applique in leaf-like motifs as well as bugle beaded fringe. It was a Razzle Dazzle of a Pageant Gown!
Score: 9.40

7. Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita: Miss Grand Indonesia made my Top 20 Gowns of "Miss Grand International 2017 preliminaries" in this deep violet colored bespoke gown from MaisonMet  by Mety Choa of Jakarta Indonesia. The design featured unusual and very intricately hand-sewn sequined lace work curving her figure over a nude mini lining dress. I'm not necessarily a fan of seeing those nude under-dresses and instead I would have loved it if it was the same color as the outer fabrication. In addition, I would have rather seen her wear simple strappy heels as opposed to those clunky silver platform ones. But overall, it was still one of the best dress styles of the night.
Score: 9.30

8. Miss Grand Ukraine Snizhana Tanchuk: Ukraine's Snizhana looked like an A-List actress at the Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet in this beautiful gown! The golden silk satin organza design---custom created for her by Crystal Design Ukraine--was elegant and chic, reminding me of those gowns from the Lebanese Couturiers like Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad. It looked expensive and well-made.
Score: 9.28

9. Miss Grand Sweden Maja Westlin: Simple. Sweet and Pageant Pretty. These were words I thought of when trying to describe this gown. I loved how un-Pageant Betty it was and I especially liked the rich-looking lace sequined applique and capelet style. Her styling (sleeked hair, makeup, earrings) were on-point as well. She looked like a Crown Princess...of Sweden!
Score: 9.15

10. Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen My Tran Nguyen: The hometown girl (the pageant is taking place in Vietnam) wore this golden/nude (of course!) colored gown from Joli Poi Wedding Studio Vietnam. This design featured intricate and very pretty sequin work over nude illusion, ending in a flourish of feathers and crystals in a mermaid-like silhouette. The dress looked expensive, fit well and was impressive onstage. I also loved her hairstyle and makeup, especially her golden shimmering eyeshadow that matched her gown.
Score: 9.10.

11. Miss Grand Thailand Pam Premika Pamela: Miss Grand Thailand made my Top 20 with this emerald-and-nude colored gown. Though simple in shape and not so dramatic (no Diva-like capes or thigh-high slit, etc), this gown still made a strong impact: Those STUNNING emerald-colored sequins did ALL THE WORK! And can we discuss that AMAZING fit??? Superb.
Score: 9.05

12. Miss Grand Sri Lanka Visna Fernando: Speaking of DIVA DRAMA...Miss Grand Sri Lanka takes the crown for her gown "flip" during her stage entrance at the Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminaries. She started her walk in this striking red dress quite elegantly enough, but then when she stopped and flipped the overskirt (and Thank Goodness the photographer captured it above!), I think EVERY Drag Queen, Gay Boy and Pageant fan from Brooklyn to Hanoi, must have fallen off their living room couch! DEEEEEVA!!!! Now, speaking of the gown--it was a great design, fab color, and I loved the slight touches of East Indian "Sari"-like details such as the lace sequin applique and satin hem band.
Score: 9.00 (and a TEN for that Overskirt Flip!)

13. Miss Grand Paraguay Lia Duarte Ashmore: Another Gown Diva was Paraguay's Lia Ashmore. Lia wore this canary yellow chiffon gown featuring a super high slit, silver and gold sequin appliques and dramatic back "capes". Normally I would think this type of gown would be Too Mucheey (the too-high slit, the bright color, the back capes, the sequins on her cha-cha's!) but she WORKED it OVERTIME onstage and I ended up LOVING IT: She looked like a Sexy Scheherazade Princess and I wanted her to take me to her Casbah Party!
Score: 8.99

14. Miss Grand Laos Chinnaly Norasing: Miss Grand Laos's gown ended up as my No. 14 in my Top 20 List. I thought she looked quite regal and red carpet fab in this ivory gown. The mermaid-shaped gown featured gorgeous silver sequins and crystals throughout the torso and body of the dress and ended in shimmering pleated crinoline at the skirt. I especially loved the "necklace"-like crystal details in the back (seen in photos above). This was an excellent showing from a Miss Grand Laos.
Score: 8.90

15. Miss Grand India Anukriti Gusain: India's Anukriti Gusain wore this carmine red gown designed by Falguni Shane Peacock India. This design was perfection from head to toe. Was it dramatic and "Diva"-like? Not necessarily, but it was a gorgeously safe and pretty gown. The off-the-shoulder style featured beautiful sequined applique, a fit-and-flare shape and dramatic train. If this was worn at a major Awards Show red carpet event by an A-List actress, it would DEFINITELY be on the Best Dressed List. And as a result, Miss Grand India ends up in my Top 20 here!
Score: 8.80

16. Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer: Tulia wore this white gown from Venezuelan designer Nidal Nouaihed. Nidal is famous for creating lots of gown for lots of Miss Venezuela contestants and winners. When Tulia first appeared onstage, she had the entire front bottom section of the gown covered--using the white georgette overskirts--hiding the thousands of crystals that enveloped the gown. Soon enough, she did a "Pageant Reveal". While I thought the color was perfect for her and the stage impact was GREAT, I wasn't a fan of the pointed bustier neckline; it was a little too Las Vegas Showgirl Costume-y for me. But, overall, the gown still was fab enough to make my Top 20.
Score: 8.75

17. Miss Grand Belarus Panova Maria Denisovna: I wanted to include this black sequined-and-tulle gown worn by Miss Grand Belarus in my Top 20. I thought the gown was stunning, especially the jet black sequin work. The style was perfect for her porcelain skin tone...I just wished the bottom tulle would have been slightly more "pouffed".
Score: 8.50

18. Miss Grand South Sudan Eyga Mojus: Miss Grand South Sudan was another one of the Pageant Divas at the Miss Grand International 2017 Preliminaries. When she entered the stage and did her runway walk, she looked like a SUPERMODEL on the Paris runways! The gown she wore--a design from ANAZ Indonesia-- featured sequined white applique strategically placed in the torso as well as hem of a tulle base as well as dramatic georgette back capes. Eyga worked the capes FLAWLESSLY and I gave her major points for that. I just wasn't a fan of that NUDE mini dress underneath. I get that it's a trend of these see-through-like pageant dresses but it is definitely a hard task to achieve the right nude color. It is one of the most difficult things to get right and if not done properly, can look tacky and in fact, look like we can see her undergarments. But...boy oh boy did she WORK those back capes DAHHHHLING!!!!
Score: 8.30

19. Miss Grand Bolivia Mariem Suarez Cuella: Miss Grand Bolivia's gown made my Top 20 because it was dramatic, well made and had stage drama. The design featured gold paillete sequins throughout over a vanilla colored duchesse satin base. The column style dress had a front side slit, attached overskirt and an off-the-shoulder neckline with sleeves. it was A LOT but...it worked for me. She looked regal, exuding a "Don't Mess With Me" air of Gown Attitude.
Score: 8.25

20. Miss Grand Nicaragua Martha Meza: Finally, Martha makes my Top 20 gowns with this violet-hued design. the gown featured a fit-and-flare shape, fan-like tulle embellishment as well as beautifully applied sequin applique. I thought she looked like the Evening Gown version of a Ming Vase. It was an impacting and unique design which I thought deserved a spot in my Top 20 Best Gowns List.
Score: 8.20

My Top 5 "OH DEAR"...
Miss Grand Nigeria Princess Omowunmi Agunbiade: Well, well, well. let me start with the Good: Overall--if you just quickly look at the photo above--it's not bad. In fact, the gold and canary colors are great, the ball gown style is dramatic and she looked quite pretty. But then...

OH NO THE BUST CUPS!!! Under no circumstances do I want to see these. this is just TACKY. I've seen this before on pageant girls and i just DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT. How on Earth do they think this is OK? Of course, you don't just go pad-less and show your nipples, etc. but...what you actually do is ADD A FULL top lining!!! Or at least partial. This above is unacceptable. Bless her heart.

Miss Grand Estonia Susanna Lehtsalu: So....Let's just start with the "Pick-up" Gown. I am not a fan of the "Pick-up" Gown. In case you don't know what a "Pick-up" gown is well, look at the photo above. It's when the gown gets 'picked up" like curtain drapes. It's Prom tacky and harks back to an 80's Quinciniera Dress. If that wasn't enough, I began to focus on the top bustier section and noticed...

Are those Crystal Sequins on on her boobies where her nipples should be??? Seriously. No.

Miss Grand Brazil Caroline Venturini: The shape is fine. It's the coral-like sequin applique that's a bit on the "Oh Dear" side. This gown looks cheap and an unfinished costume for a "Miss Aruba" or "Miss Curacao".

Miss Grand Portugal Diana Sofia Santos: Oh Miss Grand Portugal. How did she get stuck with this? And some of those other misses give you Gown Diva Drama fabulousness??!! This reminds me of a figure skating costume for a Junior Ice Dance team--or like the Wedding Guest of a super tackylicious Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

Miss Grand Sierra Leone Nyallay Sia: To finish my 5 "Oh Dear's", it's Miss Grand Sierra Leone and this concoction above. While I excuse her for possibly not having the budget of a "Miss Venezuela" or "Miss Indonesia" and I get that Sierra Leone is a war-torn country...but Oh Dear. On a good note, Nyallay actually WORKED the stage and gave her all! But...she had to model this red lace tablecloth...over a white cocktail dress. Ayyy Dios Mio.

And my AT A GIRL AWARD Goes To...
Miss Grand Serbia Maja Smiljkovic: Last but not least, I wanted to give a special 'At-a-Girl" Award to Miss Grand Serbia...for having the gumption to wear THIS. Seriously, she's featuring a tulle caplet with bird feather-shaped trim...and silver sequins...and see-through panels. One word: Wow. OK, three words: At A Girl.

ICE STYLE.....2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia COSTUMES REVIEW: PAIRS and ICE DANCE!

Cha-Cha King and Queen: Alex and Mai Shibutani of USA during their Short Dance--2017 Rostelecom cup of Russia Grand Prix of Figure Skating, Moscow Russia

2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia, Moscow Russia

In my last "Ice Style" blog posts, I discussed the COSTUMES from this past weekend's 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia including the MEN HERE, and the LADIES HERE so...now it's time to give my Costumes Recap of the Pairs and Ice Dance! This is going to be a fun costumes season, especially for Ice Dance since the theme is Latin American dances (including Rhumba, Samba, Mambo, ChaCha, Meringue, Salsa, and Bachata), so you know it's going to be HOT HOT HOT South of the Border Looks. With that said, let's begin with the Pairs and I'll end with the "Hot Hot Hot!" Ice Dancers:

PAIRS:
Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia: For their Short Program to Tango de Besame performed by Benise, the Russian pairs of Stolbova and Klimov, went with dramatic and sleek black-and-white looks. Fedor wore a white dress shirt and super tight black pants and Ksenia donned a black mini dress with an open back and bejeweled high neckline. They looked like Tango Experts showing a lesson in Buenos Aires which I guess was the point.

Free Skate to Carmen Suite: For their Free Skate to Bizet's iconic music, they continued with the sleek and un-fussy costuming. She wore a fire-red mini-dress "Carmen" costume with black and red sequin applique at the bust, as well as nude illusion neckline/yoke. It was sexy yet kind of a snooze-fest. The placement of the lace applique over the bust was a bit odd for me. Since she is so tiny it wasn't too distracting, but I feel the blace lace could have been better integrated into the costume. Klimov donned a "Matador"-like ensemble consisting of black pants and a Toreador-inspired shirt. I liked the lace appliques on his shirt that mimicked a bullfighter's iconic jacket. But what was really interesting was...

His back...I really loved that detail, which again, is a nod to the traditional bullfighter costume, but slightly more sleek and modern. While I'm a fan of all that, I'm still NOT a fan of his Man Top Bun; it's SOOOO Hipster Douchey circa 2014. CUT IT OFF.

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia: Tarasova (aka Claire Danes Doppelganger!) and Morozov skated their Short Program to Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov in these costumes above. I thought they were quite unique and fabulous. I loved the wrapping-around red ties and black background. these were PRIME examples of well designed costumes for a Pairs couple that look expensive and Pair-Perfect!

Free Skate to Candyman by Christina Aguilera: For their Free Skate, they decided to go Kooky! While I guess there were hints of the WWII 40's Milk Shake Diner Style to these looks, they were still more "The Mask" than "Candyman". And boy oh boy, could these really work for a random Ice Dance pair, dancing to a Swing or Jitterbug! For this, it just looked comical and Junior-ish.

Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran of USA: Americans Castelli and Tran wore these costumes to theirFallin' by Alicia Keys Short Program. If these seem familiar, it is because they are: They are the same costumes from last season (same program music as well). It seems that this is the season of programd and COSTUMES REDUX with several skaters like Yauzuru Hanyu, Mirai Nagasu and now Castelli and Tran...wearing the same costumes they have worn before (are they under budget constraints??). Anyhow...I thought these were one of THE BEST of last season and they still hold up now. Gorgeous styling, expensive beading...LOVE her one shoulder-like design and especially how draped and beautiful Mervin's costume is. So happy when a costume designer thinks about the guy as well (and the guy allows themselves to NOT be given a BLACK SHIRT and BLACK PANTS from Nordstrom Rack!).

Free Program to Women by Shawn Phillips: I was also a big fan of these costumes worn for their Free Skate. I loved the subtle color pairing of Castelli wearing blush pink and Tran donning more of a magenta-like color. His gray pants were on-point with his shirt color.  And Marissa's sequined dress...well, someone needs to lengthen it to the floor and turn it into a fab red carpet gown! ASAP! It is beautifully done!

ICE DANCE:
Betina Popova and Sergey Mozgov of Russia: Russians Popova and Mozgov skated their Short Dance to Cha Cha; Rhumba: Formidable by Stromae and Samba: Batacuda Mixes performed by D.J. Dero. The costumes were fun, kooky and right for the Cha-cha/Rhumba/Samba music. Her costume utilized the beaded fringe to add flutter and cha-cha movement to their dance and the polka dots--while being a little distracting--were bold enough to compete with the music and dance. I especially liked his top, especially the subtle baby blue colored piping that referenced to her kooky-and-crazy look.

Free Dance to Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet: Yes kids it's "Carmen". How could you have guessed?! Her dress had slight sequined applique nods to Toreador jackets (on her shoulders) and a ragged-looking handkerchief hem. He donned a Officer-like costume reminiscent of Don Jose, the Corporal of Dragoons from the opera. I've seen better. These were like "Carmen On a Budget".

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada: Gilles and Poirier of Canada wore these costumes for their Short Dance to Bossa Nova: Bossa Cubana and Mambo: Gopher Mambo. Piper wore an aquamarine and black Devore velvet-like dress with an open back and GORGEOUS gold jeweled sequins on her upper torso. And Paul...well, he started with a been-there/done-that boring all black look but then...halfway through their skate, she ripped his sleeves, revealing Cha-cha ruffles of a similar fabrication to her dress. While it was gimmicky, I liked it! He definitely needed a style element of fun and the ruffles did it. I liked these overall however, I wished they were more BOLD in color.

Free Dance to Stolen Hearts, Perry Mason Theme by Fred Steiner, Smokey Sax Perry, Mason Theme by Fred Steiner: I'l be really honest: I am usually a BIG FAN of Gilles and Poirier when it comes to their costumes through all these years, however...these are TERRIBLE! I'll (kind of) excuse his black shirt/black pants and suspenders look (I guess he's supposed to be Perry Mason or maybe a private investigator?) but Piper's dress leaves me perplexed. I am so surprised this dress made it to the ice. It fits odd (no swing to her skirt and it needs more flare), the oversized scroll pattern is jarring and it just does nothing to the pair or the dance. It was so distracting, I could not concentrate on their great skating. I can think of a million more creative ways to incorporate that scroll like pattern into her costume. I love this pair and hope somebody rescues them from these costumes. Please change this ASAP!

Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons of USA: Brother and sister Ice Dance pair Parsons and Parsons skated their Short Dance to Rhumba: Mambo Molly by Mambo Molly ; Slow Rhumba: Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime by Zuchero and Mambo: Congo Crazed by Mambo Molly. While these costumes weren't Latino Bright and Bold, they were sleek and still HOT HOT HOT! I liked her asymmetrical hem'ed dress featuring silver sequins in her neckline and sides. I especially loved the costume tie-in in his look and especially his v-neck shirt--which featured similar silver crystal embellishment.

Free Dance to Ghost Dances: La Partida by Victor Jara; Sikuriadas by Inti Illimani and Quiaquenpita by Inti Illimani. This was an odd dance and odd music choice. The music was neo-folkloric from Chilean artist Victor Jara Latin American folk music style from Inti Illimani. It was just unusual since one doesn't normally hear this type of music in Ice Dance. I love this music but maybe not in this kind of stage. The costumes reflected a "South American Indigenous Tribe" look to them but to see them on two VERY WHITE kids from the US, well...it just seemed almost too "Halloween Costume"-like.

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev of Russia: Russians Bobrova and Soloviev skated their Short Dance to Rhumba: Latin Lover by Joao Bosco; Samba: Dance by DJ Maksy and Samba: Quand je vois tes yeux by Dany Brilliant, and they looked Muy Caliente! She wore a very "Dancing With The Stars" barely-there asymmetrical dress in royal blue/deep purple featuring gold sequined detail at the bust and dress. The dress was also packed with fringe! And if that wasn't enough, she added a bicep bracelet and fringed earrings! Ekaterina was straight out of a Russian Ballroom Competition and looking fabulosa! Dmitri also looked sexy and hot with his black costume featuring a plunging neckline. I love the irony of the fact that even though they both OOZED the definition S.E.X. in these costumes, they still felt the need to wear those crosses on their neck. Ayyy Dios Mio.

Free Dance to Oblivion performed by Two Cellos and Beethoven's Five Secrets by The Piano Guys: For their Free Dance, Bobrova and Soloviev left the SEX back with their Short Dance and went more elegant "Period"-like with these costumes. She wore a pink-hued dress with a draped cowl neckline and dip-dyed skirt. He wore a white dress shirt, black pants and double breasted gray vest. They looked fine but both were very uncreative. They lacked any of the costume pizzazz they had in their Short Dance. Somehow I missed that.

Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia: Russia's model-looking Ice Dance couple of Stepanova and Bukin skated their Short Dance to Rhumba: Espérame en el Cielo by Mayte Martin, Samba: L'Ombelico Del Mondo by Jovanotti, Rhumba: Chandelier (Dj Maksy Rumba Remix) by Sia and Samba: Samba Do Brasil by Bellini. Once again, she followed the costume lead of her Ice Dance compatriot of  Ekaterina Bobrova and went super sexy! She wore a completely open back dress in nude with purple sequined appliques. Oh, and a fringe skirt that would make Bob Mackie blush! If anyone is going to get away with this look, it's Miranda Kerr-lookalike Alexandra Stepanova. Her partner wore (wait for it!)...an all black outfit. At least it had a plunging neckline and an asymmetrical hem on his shirt. At least.

Free Dance to Love Story Theme, Love's Dream by Rick Wakeman, Liebestraum No. 3 in A-Flat Minor, S. 541 by Franz Lizst, performed by Martin Jones: These costumes were pretty, and right for the music. The delicate blush pink color story hinted at love. At first I was worried that the color should have been stronger since their own skin color isn't too far away from that blush muted pink!, but I  surprisingly it worked on them. I also loved the intricate, yet beautiful sequined flower applique on her torso which, once again, gave a nod to romance. His soft blouson-sleeve shirt (with a plunging neckline!) also gave a feel of Romanticism and Love. These two needed to get a Hotel Suite. After their Free Dance.

Finally...
Maia and Alex Shibutani of USA: How do you say AMAZING in Ice Dance?? The Shibutanis, that's how!I LOVED their Short Dance to Mambo: Mambo No. 5 by Perez Prado; Cha Cha: Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White by Perez Prado and Samba: Mambo Jumbo/Mambo No. 8 by Perez Prado, and I especially ADORED their costumes. These were BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!! They looked so fabulous, I almost wanted to jump through the TV and be in Moscow dancing with them! I thought her bubblegum pink with gold and silver crystals dress was A STUNNER. And Alex was no Costume Chopped Liver huney! I thought his nude bedazzled shirt with black pants look was sexy and a perfect costume partner to her colorful eye candy costume. And if that isn't enough in terms of my compliments, Maia's hair and makeup were Latina Fab!

Free Dance to Paradise by Coldplay: For their Free Dance, they went much more subdued--keeping in mind their emotional and modern music. I liked the red and black colors and I especially liked her softly draped chiffon dress featuring subtle hints of ombre dying. I also appreciated how his shirt perfectly matched her dress coloring. This might not have been as impressive as their Short Dance costumes but they were beautiful and appropriate for this Free Dance.

Grand Beauty: The newly crowned Miss Grand International 2017 "Miss Grand Peru" Maria Jose Lora (center) flanked by her Runners-up (L to R) 4th Runner-up "Miss Grand Czech Republic" Nikola Uhlirova, 2nd Runner-up "Miss Grand Philippines" Elizabeth Durado Clenci, 1st Runner-up "Miss Grand Venezuela" Tulia Aleman, 3rd Runner-up "Miss Grand Puerto Rico" Brenda Jimenez

This past Wednesday night was the Finals of the "Miss Grand International 2017" Beauty Pageant, taking place at the Vinpearl Convention Center  in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. 77 contestants from all over the world competed for the coveted title in a MARVELOUS production. The winner was "Miss Grand Peru" Maria Jose Lora.

Maria Jose Lora "Miss Grand Peru"--in swimsuit and in her "National Costume" (worn during the "National Costume Competition") as well as during the Opening Number of the "Miss Grand International 2017" Finals

A favorite to win the crown by many pageant observers, the 27 year-old, 180 cm (5' 11") tall model bested all the other contestants with her beauty, confidence, intelligence, perfect English (it helps in an international beauty pageant), sexiness, her OUT OF CONTROL figure and THAT WOW of a gown (which I will discuss below).

The Winner! Maria Jose Lora "Miss Grand Peru" wins "Miss Grand International 2017" title in Vietnam

Maria Jose was originally scheduled to compete in this year's "Miss Universe Peru" contest but eventually the pageant's organizer--a former "Miss Peru", Jessica Newton--chose her to be "Miss Grand Peru" instead. Good thing she did because...SHE WON! The beauty--who actually resides in the US and represented the "USA Dept." (Peruvians living abroad in the USA) at the "Miss Universe Peru" pageant--will now travel all over the world promoting the "Creating Peace and Stopping War" message of "Miss Grand International". The actual "Miss Universe Peru 2017" pageant never happened and instead the national director designated a Runner-up to last year's pageant to be the new "Miss Universe Peru 2017".

Before I discuss my FAVORITE GOWNS from the Top 10...I have to give props to the PRODUCTION and "Miss Grand International" Pageant as a whole:
Opening number of "Miss Grand International 2017", Vinpearl Convention Center Vietnam

The show was SUPERB! I was VERY IMPRESSED by the production value, the way the final show was done, the fabulous stage design, the graphics, the lighting, the top-notch level of the contestants...I could go on and one and on. The pageant--which is based in Thailand--and has only been in existence since 2013--is ON PAR with "Miss Universe" and "Miss World" (the Top 2 International Beauty Pageants in the world). The President of "Miss Grand International" is a gentleman by the name of Nawat Itsaragrisil. He's a TV host, producer, traveler (according to Wikipedia). KUDOS to him for creating such an A-List-looking international beauty pageant!

Sequined Ao Dai's: During the final night, the ten semi-finalists came out in DAZZLING Vietnamese Ao Dai-inspired ensembles designed by Huy Quy Ngo. This was a GORGEOUS portion of the show which literally took my breath away. The segment showcased each of the 10 semi-finalists speaking about war, peace, giving powerful and personal speeches on the subject. In regards to the dresses, they were made of chiffon and stretch satin, each of them showed a dove--the symbol of peace--with wings spread flying. The white background signified the sky and there were blue pigeons throughout the dress that were made with more than 1,000 Swarovski crystals...

Ao Dai Beautiful: The 10 "Miss Grand International 2017" semi-finalists in their Huy Quy Ngo designed "International Peace" Ao Dai's--Miss Grand International 2017 Finals

Best Costume Award went to...
Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita won the Best Costume Award at the "Miss Grand International 2017" Finals. Her EXTRAORDINARY costume--designed by Morphacio and Maya Ratih--was also MY TOP CHOICE for Best Costume in my blog HERE. Well deserved!

Best in Evening Gown Award went to...
Miss Grand China Xuejia Chen: This was also a VERY GOOD CHOICE from the judges. This golden/nude/blush colored sequined gown featured a dramatic sequined feathered cape and was modeled by the six foot tall "Miss Grand China" like a Runway Diva! I LOVED it so much that it was MY SECOND BEST Gown in my blog HERE!

Now, time to discuss MY TOP TEN Best Gowns list--from No. 1 to No. 10--from the ten semi-finalists of "Miss Grand International 2017"...beginning with MY NUMBER ONE...

1. Miss Grand Peru Maria Jose Lora: It isn't normally the case that the eventual winner of the entire pageant wears MY FAVORITE gown but...it happened here at "Miss Grand International 2017"! IN my blog HERE where I discussed the Preliminary Evening Gown Competition and my Top 20,  I placed Maria as my NUMERO UNO. And Thank Goodness she didn't do a "Gown Change" (as a lot of the contestants do once they get to the Semi-Finalist/Finalist round) because it was FAB at Preliminaries and it was SUPER FAB on Final Night. The golden/nude/blush sequined gown was designed by Maritza Mendoza Atelier of Lima Peru and fit her to PERFECTION, skimming her figure like a very thin second skin. It looked effortless, sexy, well-made and the stage impact provided by the stunning Maria Jose was the icing on the gown cake!

2. Miss Grand Czech Republic Nikola Uhlirova: Nikola did a Gown Change from what she wore during the Preliminaries and boy oh boy was it a FAB change! This golden nude shimmering gown was STUNNING! The dress was designed by Juan Carlos Collazo of Puerto Rico and featured a softly flared shape in nude crinoline with gold and silver sequins splattered like fireworks. The gown had a striking fitted bodice hugging her torso wonderfully. I also LOVED her modern and chic swept-back hairstyle.

3. Miss Grand Vietnam Huyen My Tran Nguyen: Huyen My Tran was another contestant who did a Gown Change during the Finals of "Miss Grand International 2017". I liked what she wore for the Preliminaries and she made MY Top 20 List HERE but I also liked this stunning red creation from the same brand--Joli Poi Haute Couture of Ho Chi Minn Vietnam. The red mermaid shaped gown was beautifully sequined, featuring scroll-like detail and handwork, as well as a full crinoline skirt with a horsehair-trimmed hem. She looked DIVINE and oh-so-pretty. Pretty enough to make my No. 3!

4. Miss Grand Ukraine Snizhana Tanchuk: Snizhana wore the same gorgeous golden gown she wore for the Preliminaries which was VERY GOOD!  I loved this gown then and it was fab at the Finals as well. The dress featured a column gown with full overskirt in gold/nude satin organza with sequin detail and was created by Crystal Design Ukraine. It was very "Zuhair Murad/Elie Saab Haute Couture-like and looked regal, elegant and super Haute during the "Miss Grand International 2017" Top 10 Evening Gown Competition.

5. Miss Grand Puerto Rico Brenda Azaria Jimenez: I absolutely adored this golden shimmering gown that Miss Grand Puerto Rico wore It was designed by Juan Carlos Collazo who also created "Miss Grand Czech Republic's" gown as well. The fit was incredible; I loved the perfect length and how it gave an "illusion" of seeing her legs but not too much. Brenda looked like a Perfect Queen in this. Bravo to her and Juan Carlos.

6. Miss Grand Thailand Pam Premika Pamela: My sixth BEST GOWN of the Top 10 "Miss Grand International 2017" Semi-finalists was this stunning dress worn by "Miss Grand Thailand". The dress featured elaborate black sequined applique over nude crinoline with a center front slit, long sleeves and horsehair-trimmed hem. The gown design was elegant yet impacting enough for an international beauty pageant and fit her very well! Oh, and by the way, this was also another 'Gown Change"; she wore a different one during the Preliminaries. I LIKED that one too!

7. Miss Grand Philippines Elizabbeth Durado Clenci: Elizabeth changed her gown--naturally!--from what she wore during the Preliminaries (a golden/nude/blush sequined one I REALLY LIKED). The Finals gown--designed by Filipino designer Val Taguba--featured a nude base with lots of emerald and silver colored paillettes. The strapless gown was my 7th (out of the Top 10) favorite. While it was a bit "Razzle Dazzle Showgirl at the Lido"-looking and to be honest, I liked the Preliminaries one more...this was still a GOOD impacting gown.

8. Miss Grand Venezuela Tulia Aleman Ferrer: The super gorgeous Tulia almost got the Top Crown by getting the 1st Runner-up title (and well deserved!). She changed her gown from what she wore for the Preliminaries to this white and red sequined design above from Indonesian designer ANAZ, who created the gown for Miss Grand South Sudan as well as the outgoing "Miss Grand International 2016". It was my 8th favorite of the Top 10. While I liked the stage impact of that cape (Oh Sooooo popular right now with Pageant Girls!), the overall design seemed a bit Too-Mucheey. All that Asian-inspired red sequined applique seemed forced and in addition, it didn't need the silver ones on the column gown; that could have remained a simple elegant white silk crepe column gown. It would have served as a better highlight to the cape and red sequins down the front of the dress. With that said, Tulia did "make it work" and the "Too Mucheey" overdesigned gown was saved...by her STUNNING beauty.

9. Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Goesti Rizkita: I liked this gown during the Preliminaries even though I did have a couple of critiques: The nude mini dress underneath and the silver platform "Stripper" heels. Well, nothing changed. The nude lining dress was still there and she still wore those pumps. I just wished the under-dress would have been of the same color as that GORGEOUS sequined netting...and yes, she would not have worn those tacky pumps. Oh well, at least that outer sequined fabric is just OUT OF THIS WORLD beautiful AND she won the Best National Costume Award!

10. Miss Grand South Sudan Eyga Mojus: The SUPER STUNNING Eyga was my No. 10 in terms of Gowns from the Top 10 Semi-finalists. This was my least-liked. I'll start with the good: She WORKED this ANAZ Indonesia design overtime on the stage during the Finals as well as the Preliminaries (she wore the same gown) and she IS STUNNING (I have to repeat that!) but...I just don't like seeing the nude under-dress in these see-through gowns. It looks tacky. I get this whole trend of "see through/nude" gowns for pageants, etc. but I just wished the under-dress was the same color as the gown. Or just NOT NUDE; it looks as if she's wearing SPANX undergarments and well, we are NOT SUPPOSED TO SEE THEM!

CONGRATULATIONS and Felicitaciones to "Miss Grand Peru" Maria Jose Lora for winning the "Miss Grand International 2017" title! You were MY FAVORITE!

This past Sunday were the second of the Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competitions, part of the pre-Finals event in advance of the "Miss Earth 2017" Finals. This one--involving "Group 3" of the "Miss Earth 2017"contestants (these separate competitions are broken down into 3 groups of contestants). The event took place at the Landbank Auditorium Manila Philippines.

Glamour Time: Bronze, Gold and Silver "Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Group 3" Medalists (L to R) Miss Earth Vietnam (Bronze) Le This Ha Thu, Miss Earth Puerto Rico (Gold) Karla Aponte and Miss Earth Mexico (Silver) Karen Bustos

I have already discussed the first one--the Group 2 Long Gown Competition and my Top 10 Best from that event HERE--so now, it is time to discuss my Top 10 Favorite Gowns from Group 3. And in case you may want to be even more confused...Group 1's Long Competition will be coming up next (yes kids, the organizers are holding these events out of sync--in terms of the contestant's Groups).

1. Miss Earth Vietnam Le Thi Ha Thu: Even though Miss earth Vietnam got the Bronze (3rd Place), her golden gown was my favorite of this group. The halter neckline gown--designed by Joli Poli Vietnam--featured that VERY POPULAR gold/nude/blush coloring and had golden sequin applique designs along panels of iridescent organza. It also had a dramatic and quite fabulous cascade draped overskirt. It was regal, stage impacting and quite Haute Couture-esque. Her sleek top bun finished the entire look like a QUEEN!

2. Miss Earth Puerto Rico Karla Victoria Aponte: My second favorite gown was actually the Winner--or Gold medalist of this Group 3 Long Gown Competition. Miss Earth Puerto Rico wore this striking red gown that featured torso pleating, a fab drape at the shoulder and sleek overskirt. It was chic and sexy with that side slit. I wished she would have just worn gold strappy heels but you just cannot get these ladies out of those TACKY SUPER PLATFORM heels. Ayyy Dios Mio!

3. Miss Earth Mexico Karen Bustos: Mexico's Karen Bustos made my 3rd position with this black gown look. The outfit consisted of a lace-over-nude crop top with a plunging neckline (naturally!) plus and separate gown skirt--of the same sequined lace--which had a fit-and-flare silhouette and attached tulle overskirt (It was the OVERSKIRT Top 3!). I though it looked modern, fresh and a nice "Ballgown" alternative. I also loved her styling and hair...and the fact that the gown length was great (no tacky platform heels showing! YEAYYY!).

4. Miss Earth Colombia Juliana Franco: Juliana wore this metallic gown for the "Miss Earth 2017 Group 3 Long Gown Competition" and I liked it; good enough to be my No. 4! I know that for some people it may look a little "Star Wars" C-3PO-like or "Project Runway" Unconventional Challenge-esque but to heck with those haters; I liked the Versace-like modernity and the fit was quite nice. She also looked like a chic model--as opposed to a 1990's-like "Pageant Betty". Gracias Miss Tierra Colombia!

5. Miss Earth USA Andrea Gibau: Just beautiful! Miss Earth USA's Andrea Gibau wore this shimmering gold sequined halter neckline gown with nude illusion inset and she looked GREAT! The fit was nice and the gold coloring was an on-trend choice.

6. Miss Earth India Shaan Suhas Kumar: My 6th place goes to Miss Earth India. Shaan wore this VERY PINK full-shaped satin gown with silver sequin details, a sweetheart neckline and nude illusion. I was actually surprised at how "basic" it looked (as opposed to...well--take a look at "Miss Earth Vietnam" darlings!). She was very "Pretty in Pink". There was nothing extraordinary about this and it was just...nice.

7. Miss Earth Cambodia Em Kunthong: Gold/nude/blush IS THE Pageant Gown Trend happening right now. And Miss Earth Cambodia followed the trend with this gown. The design was a fit-and-flare look with sequins, an off-the-shoulder-like neckline and ruffled sleeves. She looked pretty. It wasn't a "Statement Making Gown" like the Top 3 but that's why she ended up in my 7th position.

8. Miss Earth Malaysia Cherish Ng: Cherish wore this snow-silver sequined-and-tulle gown for the "Miss Earth 2017 Group 3 Long Gown Competition". Once again, she looked 1950's Classic Hollywood Glamour Pretty and this was safe. It wasn't SUPER FAB by any means; just safe.

9. Miss Earth Malta Christie Refalo: OK Miss Earth Malta...she's taking a Cha-Cha chance! First off, I was just happy that it wasn't your typical Pageant Mermaid Shape, but yes, it was still nude/see-through-ish (oh these ladies!). I admit that as kooky as it was, I liked the sequined fringe; it was very "Chicago"/Las Vegas Showgirl and 1920's Flapper Fab. I just wished I wouldn't have seen those BOOB PADS! Seriously! Ladies: DON'T DO THAT.

10. Miss Earth Rwanda Uwase Hirwa Honorine: Lastly, I chose Miss Earth Rwanda. She wore this black dress which had sleeve cut-outs and straps as well as crystals and a sequined "belt"/waistband. She looked pretty and while this dress made my Top 10 out of all the Group 3 contestants, it was slightly on the "I'm On a Budget" scale of gowns. But, realizing she's from Rwanda and her organizers (or her!) may not have the gown budget of a "Miss Earth Philippines" or "Miss Earth Vietnam", I cut her some Gown Slack--as long as it's not tacky and tasteless and this was OK.

In case you may be out of the International Beauty Pageant loop, it's PAGEANT SEASON and the "Miss Earth 2017" Beauty Pageantis happening in the Philippines right now. The third--and final--of the "Miss Earth 2017 Long Gown Competitions" was held this past Thursday at Versailles Palace Alabang in Metro Manila Philippines. This was the Group 1 Long Gown Competition comprised of the "Miss earth 2017" contestants from...you guessed it!...Group 1. I have already discussed my TOP 10 BEST GOWNS from Group 2 HERE and Group 3 HERE so now it is time to review these gowns and my Top 10 Best.

Gown Show: Contestants from Group 1 of "Miss Earth 2017"--Versailles Palace Philippines

Now, for some reason, these last contestants from Group 1 were the "Save The Best For Last" in terms of overall gowns...or at least the most professional presentation. Maybe it was just the venue or the contestants but, Group 1 was a couple notches up from poor Group 2 (sorry Group 2!). With that said, here were my TOP TEN FAVORITES beginning with the actual Gold Medalist: Miss Earth Venezuela!!!

1. Miss Earth Venezuela Ninoska Vasquez: Ninoska won the Gold medal in this royal blue satin gown from Venezuelan designer Hugo Espina. Her GORGEOUS earrings were from George Wittels (of course!). I have to say that this was Red Carpet Fab all the way. Ninoska looked chic, sleek...like an actress at Cannes Film Festival...HOT! The gown featured a strapless bustier with an over-the-shoulder fall for drama as well as a side draped/wrapped gown-skirt. LOVED her sleek hair and THOSE earrings (OMG!) and I didn't even hate the platform heels! Why? These were subtle and kind of elegant. Not tacky like most of the others I have seen! Now...even though she was MY BEST PICK, there was an OOPSIE....

Is That Her Cha-Cha?--I think I see her "See You Next Tuesday"...or maybe the edge of her panties. Whatever it could be, this is a lesson in that it doesn't need to be THAT HIGH. And maybe a little hand stitched sewing right there should be in order. ASAP!

2. Miss Earth Panama Erika Parker: Erika tied for the Bronze medal in the "Long Gown Group 1 Competition" but she made my No. 2 spot. I loved the fringed mint green gown with back iridescent chiffon "capes". The style had an Empire-waisted sequined trim and the color looked FAB on her. With that beautiful face and that on-point elegant hairstyle...it all came together BEAUTIFULLY!

3. Miss Earth Thailand Paweensuda Drouin: Thai-Chinese Canadian Miss Earth Thailand was my 3rd Spot in this black strapless sequined gown design. She won the Silver (2nd Place) with the real judges. I thought she looked like a true Red Carpet actress--and one who would end up in the Best Dressed List--in this gown. This was all pretty flawless--even down to her NOT TACKY NON-PLATFORM shoes!

4. Miss Earth Crimea Elena Trifonova: In case you guys are wondering...yes, there is a "Miss Earth Crimea". Move on...Now, let's discuss her gown! I thought she looked quite pretty! The light pink ballgown was delicate and Princess-like. The dress had a sequined bodice and full tulle gown-skirt and Elena looked very Lily Collins-like in this. She should save this gown for the "Miss World" or "Miss International" peeps (if she ever competed with those pageants) 'cause they would LOVE THIS; it's SOOOOO THEM!

5. Miss Earth Australia Nina Robertson: Filipino-Australian Nina wore this white and nude sequined applique gown for the "Miss Earth 2017 Group 1 Long Gown Competition". I liked the gown design and style, especially the shape and those iridescent tulle skirt godets and shoulder "falls". I just wish something could be done--design-wise--to not see those BOOB PADS; they're soooo distracting and tacky.

6. Miss Earth Wales Sophie Bettridge: Sophie wore this red sequined strapless gown and it was stunning enough to make the 6th spot in my Top 10 "Miss Earth 2017 Group 1 Long Gown Competition". The fit was perfect and so was the length. The elaborate flower-like paillette beading was exquisite! I also loved her sleek and clean hair and makeup.

7. Miss Earth Czech Republic Iva Uchytilova: Iva went with the Golden Gown Trend but her choice involved a cheetah-like "print"--and I liked it! The halter-style fit-and-flare gown fit her very well and she looked amazing. Her hair and makeup were also A+.

8. Miss Earth Austria Bianca Kronsteiner: Bianca's gown ended up in my 8th position (out of 10). I thought this was a pretty effort in this strawberry-red/pink sequined column dress which featured flower appliques. Once again, the fit was nice and length: Very good. I wish the straps were something more...elegant, but overall, it was good enough to make my Top 10 here.

9. Miss Earth Ethiopia Mekdalawit Mequanent: Gold: Check! Sequins: Check! Miss Earth Ethiopia wore this strapless golden number and it was nice and effective. Was it extraordinary pageant Couture? Nope. But it was OK enough to make my No. 9 (out of 10) spot. I thought her makeup and hair were beautiful but in terms of the gown, I wished the strapless neckline looked a bit odd and I could removed about an inch off the top.

10. Miss Earth Netherlands Faith Landman: Faith and her gown actually tied for the Bronze medal in the "Miss Earth 2017 Group 1 Long Gown Competition", which means she was Number 3...or 4! But in my list, she was Number 10. There are soooo many of these golden sequined gowns, you REALLY need to be OUTSTANDING to...STAND OUT. This was a bit "Scheherazade" Tacky-licious. From the Too-big earrings to the wrist/hand jewelry...to the hair and makeup...it was like a Moroccan Belly Dancer at a fancy restaurant.

Black Swan Fab: Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond performs her Free Skate--Skate Canada International 2017, Regina Saskatchewan, Canada

This past weekend was the second event of the 2017-2018 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition: 2017 Skate Canada International. This year's event was held in Regina, Saskatchewan Canada. Last week, I discussed the costumes for the first event of the series--the 2017 Rostelecom Cup of Russia competition (Click HERE for Ladies, HERE for Men and HERE for Pairs & Ice Dance) so now, it's time to talk about the Costumes of Skate Canada 2017! First up, it's the LADIES!

Which One Is NOT a Costume Repeat? (L to R) Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond, USA's Karen Chen, Russia's Maria Sotskova and USA's Ashley Wagner--Skate Canada International 2017

Now...not sure why but it seems like GROUNDHOG'S DAY in the Figure Skating Costume World for this 2017-2018 season. Lots of the figure skaters--whether Ladies, Men, Ice Dance--are repeating programs of the past. Many figure skating fans and commentators speculate that since it is an Olympic Season, many of them are going back to their "tried and true" programs from past seasons that were successful and are now reprising them in hopes of recreating their previous success and winning that elusive Olympic Medal. With that said, you'd think they would at least do a "costume refresher". But NO... Maybe these skaters are on a VERY TIGHT costume budget? BUT... what about the skaters that are repeating costumes from past programs skating to NEW programs! OK, now I'm really thinking that they are either being cheap or (let's hope!), it is just the beginning of the season and their actual costumes are still being created, so they're just repeating these because they have nothing else--for now! We'll see...

With all that in mind, let's discuss the LADIES of Skate Canada International 2017:
Ashley Wagner USA: Short Program to Hip Hip Chin Chin performed by Club des Belugas (same Short Program from 2015-2016 Season). The costume--well, it wasn't much of one--it was a rather drab black leotard with simple crystal beading accented by a ragged hem skirt thang. I know that sounds so un-fashion-y but seriously what was that? I wasn't a fan; it just didn't look refined, ISU Grand Prix competition level and almost seemed store bought (Mon Dieu!)...Since Ashley has done this program before (Yes, it's Groundhog's Day kids!), I wanted to see what costume (or costumes) she wore to this before...

HELLO FABULOUS!!! OK, now I'm REALLY MAD! Ashley wore these TWO styles during the 2015-2016 Season Short Program and it baffles me that she just didn't re-wear one of these!!!! Instead of that black "thang" with the raggedy hem. Will someone PLEASE find these in Ashley's closet and stuff them in her carry-on bag for her next competition??!! Pretty please?

Free Skate to Diamonds, One Day I'll Fly Away, The Show Must Go On (from "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack): Ashley decided at the last minute to drop her "La La Land" Free Program and go back to this one which she skated to back in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 Seasons. So, while the program is a repeat, the costume, thank goodness is not. This red sequined style is new and pretty on Ashley. The costume hints at a corset silhouette in the front as well as in the back with the criss-cross looping. While this was a nice costume, it still didn't have the stage appeal and Haute Costume look of these:

Ashley's Moulin Rouge Chic--These costumes above were ones worn by Ashley Wagner in previous seasons while skating to "Moulin Rouge!'.

Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada: In case you are thinking you may have seen this costume on Kaetlyn before, it is because...YOU HAVE! Not only has Osmond gone back to her Short Program to Sous le ciel de Paris, Milord performed by Edith Piaf from the 2016-2017 Season, she is using THE SAME COSTUME as well. The costume features a tie-neck design, midnight blue sequined chiffon with applique details, all giving a nod to Parisian Chic. I liked the costume then and still do but... really, I just wish she would have worn something new. Just because well...I HAVE ALREADY SEEN THIS BEFORE!

Free Skate to Andante Allegro (from "Swan Lake") and No. 24 Scene: Allegro (from "Swan Lake") by Petr I. Tchaikovski, Stumbled Beginnings (from "Black Swan") and Nina's Dream (from "Black Swan") by Clint Mansell--OK, now I'm HAPPY!! This "Black Swan" costume was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! The design was exquisitely made, looked Ballet-perfect, refined, elegant...Kaetlyn looked like Margot Fonteyn at the Royal Ballet with this costume, Prima Ballerina makeup and that top-knot...SUPERB! I also LOVED how the sequins/crystals were peeking over the shoulders...

Coming from the beautifully studded illusion-and-crystal back (photos above). Well done!

Marin Honda of Japan: Honda skated her Short Program to The Giving by Michael W. Smith in this sublime costume above. I thought this nude/blush colored costume was so pretty and delicate and right for the music and the skater. The sequin work over nude illusion also included random feathers and some amethyst colored jeweled crystals as well.

Free Skate to Turandot by Giacomo Puccini: For her Free Skate, Marin wore this scarlet red colored design featuring gold sequins in a very intricate pattern highlighting her upper torso. Once again, this was an exceptional costume from the young 16-year-old Japanese skater.

Courtney Hicks of USA: I always look forward to Courtney Hicks and her costumes because she "brings it"! This costume for her Short Program to Nocturne (from "La Califfa" soundtrack) by Ennio Morricone, performed by Yo Yo Ma made me smile. I LOVED the feather-like sequin detail in the front and off-center "plunging neckline". The ombre-dye-looking blue coloring was pretty and I also liked the handkerchief-hemmed skirt section. Her braided top-knot was so chic as well!

Free Skate to Amazing Grace performed by The Tenors, ft. Natalie Grant: For her Free Skate, she also made me a Happy Figure Skating Costume Commentator! This costume was so gorgeous--I loved the lilac-to-violet color, the EXQUISITE gold and silver sequins perfectly placed in her upper torso thereby bringing attention to that area. This was a great example of a finely-made expensive costume. If I was a skater and the designer told me this cost $5,000, I'd ask "To whom do I write the check?". Now, I have to say that I have no idea who designs Courtney's costumes--but they are gorgeous! And I wonder if...

her coach Todd Sands and his wife Jenni Meno-Sands had a hand in helping her style her looks.  I remember Jenni's costumes ALWAYS being SUBLIME, elegant and Stylish. I wonder if Jenni had something to do with Courtney's costumes??? Inquiring minds want to know (i.e. ME!).

Karen Chen of USA: Karen skated her Short Program to El Tango de Rozanne (from "Moulin Rouge!") and in case you are having another one  of those "Figure Skating Groundhog's Day" feelings...you are correct: She has worn this costume before (Seriously: What is going on???). This is the same costume she wore for her last season's Free Skate to Tango Jalousie by Jacob Gade. Well, at least it was a Free Skate and different music. I liked it then and I still think it's SOOO Tango Fab! But yes, it would be nice to see something new.

Free Skate to Slow Dancing in the Big City (soundtrack) by Bill Conti: Speaking of new, this is! Karen skated her Free Skate in this blue crystal studded costume. The program was new (originally, it was supposed to be "Carmen" so...I wonder if she just would have worn the SAME costume for her SP and Free Skate??!! Two-for-One!). Glad she didn't because then it would have REALLY looked as if she was under MAJOR budget constraints. This costume was nice and I did like the heavy-to-light display of crystals but I can't help but think it just lacked that certain "Figure Skating Bespoke Costume" look. In other words, there was really nothing extra special about it.

Maria Sotskova of Russia: Oh here we go AGAIN: Another Costume Repeat Offender! Maria wore this powder pink colored costume for her 2017-2018 Short Program to Swam Lake by Tchaikovsky. And yes, if you think you saw this before...you're right again! This is thesame costume she used last season for her Free Skate to different music, At the Manilovs (from "Dead Souls") Addagio by Alfred Schnittke. If it worked for that, I guess (her team) thought it could work for "Swan Lake"???? OK, it's official, these people are being CHEAP...or shall I say "thrifty"--or I.S.U. or their countries figure skating associations aren't giving these kids enough funds. The costume is pretty and that back is gorgeous and yes, this would be so fab as a gown for a future "Miss Universe" but....Can I See A NEW COSTUME!!

Free Skate to Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy: Oh GOODIE: A new costume! Russia's Maria Sotskova skated her Free Skate wearing this deep lilac-hued costume featuring intricate gathered-and-braided details embellishing the bust and midriff sections of her torso. I liked the "different" take on a gathered/draped costume and I thought that--overall--it worked with the iconic music and program, but it all seemed a little heavy and bulky....and dare I say....polyester-synthetic! Ye Gads!

Anna Pogorilaya of Russia: Anna skated her Short Program to Esperanza by Maxime Rodriguez. The music is a classical flamenco style and therefore, her red and gold costume works. The look was a mix of "Scheherazade Meets Madrid". The fit on the upper torso was a little odd and loose and I feel she needed something to accentuate her waist. It was a dramatic look, but made her look a bit square-shaped.

Free Skate to Swan Lake by Petr I. Tchaikovski: For her Free Skate, she wore this "Black Swan"-like costume. It wasn't as refined or high-end chic as Kaetlyn Osmond's but it was OK. I liked that the silver crystals in the front gave the illusion of a slimming look with the design. And I also didn't dislike the gloves (I am usually not such a fan of those gimmicky gloves!). But poor Anna...

This is not part of her skate, kids! Anna fell several times and naturally, photographers were there to capture it. I added these photos because I was just excited to see close-up's of the crystal detail (seriously!). But, yeah, if you think this is just a fluke. Google "Anna Pogorilaya". Literally, the second name search that comes up is..."Anna Pogorilaya Falls". If you think I'm kidding, look HERE. It seems to be her "thang".

Rika Hongo of Japan: Japan's Rika Hongo is a skater who I also look forward to--in terms of costumes. She seems to understand the power of fab costumes as integral to her program. This season, she did not disappoint. Hongo skated her Short Program to O Fortuna (from "Carmina Burana") by Carl Orff wearing this eccentric and striking red design featuring multicolored jeweled sequins, a nude illusion shoulder/neckline/sleeve section ad black crystals that almost looked like Tribal Tattoos. Me LIKEY it!

Free Skate to Frida (soundtrack) by Elliot Goldenthal: Lastly, Rika skated her Free Skate to "Frida" and she delivered another wonderful costume! I LOVED the black oversized netting...the bold and colorful flower designs...her center-parted hair and on-point makeup! It may be the second Grand Prix event of the 2017-2018 season but this is already one of MY FAVORITE LADIES COSTUMES!

Filipiniana Winner: Miss Earth Philippines wins the Gold Medal for Asia at the "Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition"--Century Park Hotel Manila Philippines

Last night was the much-anticipated National Costumes Competition of the 2017 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant, occurring in the Philippines. The contest--which took place at the Century Park Hotel in Manila--featured the 86 contestants from all over the world showing off their National Costumes grouped by geographical regions including Central and North America, South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and so on.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded for the top costumes (as deemed by the judges) for each geographical region. The Gold Medals (top prize) for National Costumes went to Miss Earth Philippines for Asia, Miss Earth Russia for Eastern Europe, Miss Earth Portugal for Central Western Europe, Miss Earth Bolivia for South America, Miss Earth Ghana for Africa, and Miss Earth Guatemala for Central and North America.

Medal Costume Couture: Winning costumes at the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costumes Competition, Century Park Hotel Manila Philippines

Now that we know the judges' picks, here are MY TOP 15 FAVORITES of the Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes beginning with NUMBER ONE:
1. Miss Earth Philippines Karen Ibasco: Karen won the Gold for Asia, and she gets MY GOLD PRIZE for BEST COSTUME of all the contestants! "Miss Earth Philippines'" costume was a Filipiniana Terno designed by Louis Pangilinan. It was EXTRAORDINARY! From the statement-making necklace...to the off-the-shoulder Mantilla top...to the fan...

Charles James Meets Filipiniana: Charles James gowns (left) and an example of a traditional Filipipiana Terno Dress (right)

...to the intricately designed and cross patterned multi-godet paneled Charles James-like crinoline gown-skirt...WOW! This costume should be in a museum! Kudos to the designer and all the very talented artists and sewers who made this.

2. Miss Earth Thailand Paweensuda Drouin: My second favorite was the costume worn by the stunning Paweensuda Drouin, Miss Earth Thailand. This stunning creation represents the Hmong Thai tribe, showcasing the gorgeous intricate silver headdress and batik printed fabric of the Hmong. The exquisite detail on the headdress alone deserves a medal! And I do love how chic the top and skirt look. Take that crown away and that outfit alone could be worn at a very fancy black-tie gala in Bangkok!

3. Miss Earth Nepal Rojina Shrestha: This costume was stage impacting, beautiful and fab enough to make my Top Three! The mixing of the Sari with the Hindu gods imagery...and those striking red and gold colors and silk fabrics...everything about this looked regal and very Costume Couture!

4. Miss Earth Guatemala Maria Jose Castaneda: Maria Jose's costume won the Gold for Central and North America. And I can see why; it was my 4th Best among the 86 contestants. This gorgeous creation was made and designed by Guatemalan designer Cesar Alejandro Portillo who creates many of the national costumes for "Miss Guatemala" contestants. This costume is to me THE BEST one in the "Pre-Columbian Fantasy Diva" category. The Guatemalan fabric, the colors, the feathered headdress, the sequined cape...I can't imagine how much work and time went into this and I really hope Cesar was paid A TON of money for this! Muy Bien!

5. Miss Earth Ghana Maud Fadi: "Miss Earth Ghana" was my 5th Best and the  highest spot for a contestant form Africa. I was blown away by her presentation (she came out covered partially using her cape) and then opened it up to reveal the fabulous Kente cloth patterns. The aqua blue mermaid-shaped gown featured multicolored sequins at the bust and torso as well as bottom portion of the dress--and if that wasn't enough, it had a matching Kente cloth pleated peplum. Oh, and then there was her Ghana Coat of Arms headdress! This was a National Costume MOMENT Ladies & Gentlemen!

6. Miss Earth Japan Yasuyo Saito: "Miss Earth Japan" wore this multicolored kimono robe and dress--and she looked GLORIOUS! The costume itself was superb: The colors and the silk brocade fabrication were INCREDIBLE. Kimono DIVA!

7. Miss Earth Costa Rica Fernanda Rodriguez: At No. 7 in my Top 15 Best National Costume List is "Miss Earth Costa Rica". I loved the look of this costume, especially the bold colors and prominent feathers in the front. The costume itself represents the exotic plants and migratory birds that live together in Costa Rica and was designed by Filipino designer Maestro John. I wished he could have also designed fabulous shoes to have gone with the costume--as opposed to these off-the-rack nude platform heels.

8. Miss Earth Canada Jacqueline Marsh: OK, there are Drag Queens in Canada DYING to get their manicured hands on this costume!! This white and red UBER snowflake costume was created by Filipino designer Tohe Rojas Gantuangco and he did a FABULOUS job--take a look at all those HUNDREDS (possibly thousands!) of maple leaf snow flakes attached to her bodysuit and "wings". And the red sequined headdress as well as matching red details throughout the costume really brought home the "Go Canada!" theme.

9. Miss Earth Sri Lanka Shyama Dahayanaka: I loved "Miss Earth Sri Lanka's" Bird Couture costume at the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costume Competition. This feathered and multicolored costume represents the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl (seen in lower top photo) and was very impacting for many reasons including that fabulous headdress, the sequined applique and of course, the actual fowl feathers. She was a Bird Goddess in this!

10. Miss Earth Malaysia Cherish Ng: "Miss Earth Malaysia" wore this costume titled "Khatulistiwa: the Goddess Flora"which was created by Borneo Republic Malaysia Creations. It was my No. 10 out of 15 Best Costumes of "Miss Earth 2017". The costume is inspired by the Latin name of Flora, the goddess of plants, flowers, and fertility as well as “Khatulistiwa”--the Malay word for equator. On Earth, the Equator is an imaginary line on the surface, dividing the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. As a country surrounded by the sea and located near the equator, Malaysia naturally receives plenty of sunlight. As a result, various species of flower can be seen across Malaysia. This costume symbolizes beautiful flowers in Malaysia. During the production of this costume, recycled items were used namely aluminum pull tabs from drink cans, plastic bottle caps, used buttons, used wire phone and used floor rugs. In other words, not only is this fabulous for the "Miss Earth" Beauty Pageant...this design would be great for the "Project Runway" Unconventional Challenge!

11. Miss Earth Mongolia Tugs-Amgalan Batjargal: I liked this costume worn by "Miss Earth Mongolia". It looked refined, expensive and still stage-impacting. The silk fabric with fur trim looked rich and that headdress with jeweled and sequined details really took her to a Mongolian Queen level!

12. Miss Earth Vietnam La Thi Ha Thu: Made by Vietnamese designer Nguyen Minh Cong from one of his recent collections entitled "The Dreamers", this costume worn by "Miss Earth Vietnam" represents a strong female soldier. Made of a natural silk fabric, as well as glittering lame fabric, the look features a leotard/body suit, midriff peplum corset, overskirt and lotus flower details. The lotus flowers symbolize the "sturdiness and softness of Vietnamese women"according to the designer. I thought it was chic, modern and costume-impacting. I just wished she would have worn THE SAME DIVA shoes she wore in the pre-pageant photoshoot above--as opposed to the actual contest! What happened to those fabulous shoes? Were they lost in a luggage snafu?

13. Miss Earth  Panama Erika Parker: My thirteenth choice for Best Costume is "Miss Earth Panama". I loved the colors, the story, her presentation and yes--the CROWN! Her costume is entitled "Pollera Congo" (a pollera is a full skirt). This folkloric costume comes from the Panamanian province of Colon...

The costume represents the women of this area and their traditional dress. The woman is THE QUEEN and head of the family and therefore, the crown. The mixed pieces of fabric comes from when the ethnically African people in Panama were slaves, their masters would only give them leftovers of their fabric to use on their clothes and therefore, that's how they made their polleras...using discarded fabric from their Masters. The costume and overall look just made me smile. She may be barefoot but she looked RICH and EXUBERANT.

14. Miss Earth Mexico Karen Bustos: Karen comes from San Luis Potosi in Mexico and therefore, her costume paid tribute to the fabrication used in San Luis Potosi traditional dress. I loved the fashion-fab design (sleek column gown with side front slit!), the great red-and-white print, and super headdress adorned with red rose-shaped satin. I think it's so great when a designer can take a traditional folkloric dress and take it to another, almost-red carpet level! Muy bien!

15. Miss Earth Venezuela Ninoska Vasquez: Finally, I wanted to add the costume worn by "Miss earth Venezuela" in my Top 15 List. Ninoska's costume was designed by Carlos Perez and it was a sequined bodysuit of Earth Flora-and-Fauna...and Water Gorgeousness...

The look includes details representing Venezuelan Orchids, as well as the mountains, the rivers and birds of the country. To top it all off, the blue and silver crystals falling from her arm represent the glorious Angel Falls. In line with the "Miss Earth" theme, this costume is very representative of "Mother Earth" and all the natural wonders of that troubled South American country.

Just for fun...I wanted to add this "Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition" Costumes Extra...Guess what country this "National Costume" is from?
No...not the nation of "McDonalds"...this is Miss Earth BELGIUM! And yes kids, she wore a costume featuring "French Fries". Why? Because if you know your food history...French Fries are actually from Belgium! Historians claim that potatoes were being fried--since the late 1600's (!) in Belgium. Soooo, yeah, that's Miss Earth Belgium's national costume. And I LIKE IT!

CONGRATULATIONS Miss Earth Philippines! Your costume was MY Number One Costume of the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costumes!

The Blue Boy: Jason Brown of USA skating his Free Skate at Skate Canada International 2017, Regina Saskatchewan, Canada

In my last post HERE, I discussed the LADIES of Skate Canada International 2017 and their costumes--and all those COSTUME REPEATS (!). Sooooo...now it is time for the MEN. Thank goodness that they were a bit more Costume savvy than the ladies and did not do COSTUME REPEATS but they did do Music-and-Program Repeats instead. So, at least, somehow, they opted for NEW costumes, Gracias a Dios!

Shoma Uno of Japan: I look forward to what Japan's Shoma Uno will wear each season for his programs since he seems like a skater who cares about his costume and the whole stage presence/artistry of it all. For his Short Program to Winter (from "Four Seasons") by Antonio Vivaldi, he wore this costume above. I loved this costume on him. The Ombré dyed stretch velvet combined with the beautiful beadwork that mimicked ice crystals all combined to create the perfect accent to his stunning skating.

Free Skate to Turandot, Nessun Dorma (from "Turandot") by Giacomo Puccini, performed by Jose Carreras--Shoma Uno wore this costume for his Free Skate. it consisted of black pants (of course!) and an intricately detailed royal blue top. The top was striking and impacting. It featured a "plunging neckline" (demurely covered by nude illusion), and gold sequin applique highlighting his neckline and upper torso. It's obvious Shoma Uno LOVES a FABULOUS top for his skates and this follows this style pattern. In case you were wondering, this program was a REPEAT PROGRAM (The Season of Figure Skating Groundhog's Day!): This "Turandot" program was the same as Season 2015-2016 but THANK GOODNESS, not the same costume. this is what he wore then:

Here is his costume back then. At least, he used a new costume!

Takahito Mura of Japan: Mura skated his Short Program to Zapateado (Flamenco) wearing this black-and-white ensemble. The look had the ubiquitous black pants as well as a very flashy applique lace-like top featuring sleeve ruffles, stand-up collar, crystals and, if that wasn't enough, fringe on the front as well as what looked like sleeve "garter belts". I (kind of) see the Flamenco reference (the lace, the ruffles...the black & white) but it was still kind of a mess.

Free Skate to The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber--For his Free Skate, Takahito brought back (Groundhog's Day!) his program from the 2014-2015 Season but...it was a different cut of music (well, at least, there's that!) AND this old-but-new program was choreographed by none other than Charlie White! In terms of his costume, he wore this part black/part cabernet red jacket look with heavily studded lapel, a red chest pocket hankie and mismatching black and white gloves. Mura, once again, took it into a Too Mucheey Costume Level. I get the "Phantom" reference, but it was all a bit too kitschy for my taste. But...at least he didn't repeat his costume:

This is what he wore back then...and I kind of wish he would have worn it again! At least it was classier (he did keep the black-and-white gloves though!)

Michal Brezina of Czech Republic: Michal has a new look and he's giving "Hipster Skater" (Oh lordy!) with that annoying top knot. He skated his Short Program to Kodo (Japanese Drums) in this black and white costume featuring a skin-tight top with crystal studded dragon-like motifs. The look worked--he did look like one of the Kodo performers and at least he didn't wear this:

On second thought...that might look HOT on Michal Brezina!

Patrick Chan of Canada: Patrick skated his Short Program to Dust in the Wind by Kansas in this ensemble of black pants and a white-and-black top. According to CBC Sports, Patrick Chan arrived at Skate Canada International after some travel snafus but...his costumes didn't. The three-time world figure skating champion missed last Thursday morning's practice after his flight out of Detroit on Wednesday was delayed. He missed his connection in Toronto, and spent the night there before flying to Regina on Thursday. Well, his costumes might not have arrived and I don't know where he got this, but I liked it! It was sleek, fit him well, and the top was kinda beautiful with that great snow-like detail.

Free Skate to Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, performed by Jeff Buckley: Once again, not sure if his actual costumes finally arrived and these were those but if not--who cares? I thought this was, again, quite beautiful. I LOVE seeing male figure skaters wear softly draped tops such as these. It might not have been much of a costume--and it would be nice to see maybe some red piping (or a red tuxedo stripe) down the side of the pants--but I appreciated the draping.

Jason Brown of USA: Jason skated his Short Program to The Room Where It Happens (from "Hamilton") by Lin Manuel Miranda. We know that Jason Brown has probably never met a fabulous costume he did not like and from the moment he stepped onto the ice, you KNEW he was skating to "Hamilton": I loved this costume. The sleeveless jacket color, the sharp black buttoned lapels, white ruffled blouse, grey vest, pants...all reflected the era and look of Aaron Burr in "Hamilton" and overall, it was an EXCELLENT costume:

Leslie Odom Jr. as "Aaron Burr" in Broadway's "Hamilton"

Jason Brown Free Skate to Inner Love by Maxime Rodriguez: For his Free Skate, Brown donned this all blue look consisting of stretch velvet pants and an ombre-shaded skin-tight top featuring an off-center illusion panel accented by sequined embellishment. Once again, I "Heart" Jason for embracing a head-to-toe costume look. I loved the bold color and especially the gorgeous crystal detail on the front of his top. If I had one small critique, it would be the fit of the pants. I'm not sure if it is the weight of the velvet material or just a bit too much ease, but they seem a bit loosey-goosey. I almost wish the entire outfit were one piece. I have a feeling he could pull it off!

**COSTUME EXTRA:
Alexander Samarin of Russia: Samarin skated his Free Skate to La Naissance de Yaha by Saint-Preux, The Unforgiven III by Metallica and House of the Rising Sun performed by Dave Evans wearing this...and why not?? The music was hard rock/metal and his costume reflected this in a kooky costume way. The top had orange colored "fire" accents (??), a nude illusion black scroll-like sleeve (just one) and take a look at that skull belt buckle! I just HAD to add this photo--and costume--to end my Men Costume Blog.

Costume Romance: Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada skate their Short Dance at Skate Canada International 2017, Regina Saskatchewan Canada

In my two previous posts on Skate Canada International 2017, I've discussed the LADIES COSTUMES HERE and MEN'S COSTUMES HERE...to finish up my ICE STYLE blogs on this second ISU of Figure Skating Grand Prix event, it's now time for the PAIRS and ICE DANCE COSTUMES RECAP. Let's begin with the...

PAIRS:
Aliona Savchetko and Bruno Massot of Germany: Savchenko and Massot skated their Short Program to Ameksa - Fuego by Taalbi Brothers, edited by Maxime Rodriguez in these costumes and I liked HERS. His, though, was another matter. "Fuego" means fire in Spanish so it makes perfect sense she would be wearing a fire-inspired sequined costume. Aliona's look included a red costume with jagged hem with gold and silver crystals and fire-like embellishment. I could have done without the wrist cuffs (??!!), but overall it was a very striking look. I especially liked the high neck with a sprinkle of gold crystals and the think, criss-cross black belt which brought the look to a very modern level. Bruno's, however, was your typical "Ross Dress For Less" male figure skating partner look. That tacky belt from 1997 was sooooo unnecessary.

Free Skate to La Terre vue du ciel by Armand Amar, edited by Maxime Rodriguez: For their Free Skate, they made me proud in that Bruno wasn't wearing stuff from his closet and that they both matched and looked LIKE A PAIR (what a novel idea!). Her lilac colored ombre-dyed costume was exquisite, especially the sequin work and that fabulous back! And...(this is something I JUST NOTICED!): She also LOVES a high neck and here it was being featured, of course. Speaking of necks...

Bruno's Nude Illusion Neck-piece: I was a bit perplexed about his nude illusion neck-piece. I wondered why he even needed it and instead, just let him show some actual SKIN (Hello!!!). It was kind of tacky and very noticeable. After closer inspection, I realized that maybe it was an "after thought"--after they made his costume, I bet that stand up collar and small v-neck just kept flopping down and so...they decided to add that nude illusion piece. I wonder.

Cheng Peng and Yang Jin of China: The Chinese Pairs team skated their Short Program to Assassin's Tango (from "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" soundtrack) by John Powell. I thought these were nicely done costumes for both of them. Her red sequined dress was beautiful and looked Haute (LOVED that neckline!) and his Mandarin-collared tuxedo shirt and back pants look was right--for the music and theme. I also appreciated the black buttons on the shirt that picked up the black color of his pants.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada: Duhamel and Radford of Canada skated their Short Program to With Or Without You by U2 performed by April Meservy and these costumes were VERY NICE! They looked like A PAIR and the delicate crystal details were pretty--I especially liked how they were brought onto his shirt. I was just a bit bewildered by the triangular crystals on Meagan's waist. I get that it was probably supposed to be a belt/waistband detail but, it was just oddly placed and the high waist was odd and cut her body in half.

Free Skate to Neutron Star Collision, Samson and Dalilah, and Uprising by Muse: OK, let's start with Meagan: I LOVED this red and silver sequined costume; GORGEOUS. It looked expensive, well-made, fit well and that sequined bodice work was OUT OF CONTROL! Eric's however...yes, another all-black "Nordstrom Rack" Men's Look. Yawn. Why someone couldn't just give this hot and .000002% fat free man a sexy skin-tight top with sequins and a little bit of red (to match hers), is beyond me. Now, if you think Meagan's beautiful costume looks familiar, it's because it is a COSTUME REPEAT (Groundhog's Day!)...

Meagan wore the same costume for their Season 2015-2016 Short Program to Your Song (From "Moulin Rouge!") by Elton John/Performed by Ewan McGregor. I really wonder if these skaters will just do Costume Repeats or maybe they will "Bust out" (like those Beauty Pageant Girls!) with SUPER FAB NEW COSTUMES in time for the Olympics??!! (PLEASE!)

Natalia Zabiiako and Enbert of Russia: Zabiiako and Enbert skated their Short Program to Summer of 42 (soundtrack). The movie--according to Wikipedia--is a "coming-of-age comedy/drama about a summer vacation on Nantucket Island in 1942. These costumes had NOTHING to do with Nantucket...or 1942, for that matter, but I liked them! The lilac colors were pretty and soft and her beautifully draped dress was so refined. I also loved his asymmetrical neckline top with horizontal sequined darts and gathered side. Even though these had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the movie and era...I was still a fan.

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres of France: Leave it to Vanessa and Morgan to get me excited about Pairs Costumes! They always BRING IT! And this season is no exception. For their Short Program to Make It Rain by Ed Sheeran arranged by Maxime Rodriguez, Vanessa wore this (almost) painted-on silver unitard/bodysuit. The costume had a gorgeously sequined bodice and...SERIOUSLY, it was A SECOND SKIN. She looked AMAZING. Morgan was not left behind--costume-wise--with his matching silver top and gray skin-tight pants. His top was quite nicely designed with the solid/nude illusion panels, side slits, super tight fit, and slim sleeves. I love how the costume designer made BOTH of them SO SUPER SEXY. It's never all about her. Morgan is no Figure Skating Costume Chopped Liver huney!

Free Skate to Say Something (A Great Big World) performed by Christina Aguilera
Sense of Freedom by Maxime Rodriguez: Let's discuss their costumes for their Free Skate. Vanessa wore a bright royal blue "Versace"-like costume featuring strap detail, crystals and overall styling reminiscent of the 90's heydays of Gianni Versace. I could care less if the music or program had NOTHING to do with the Italian designer or 90's Supermodels because I loved her costume! And now, it's time for Morgan...

While I do not complain when I see something SUPER TIGHT and SUPER SEXY on Morgan Cipres (Bonjour Morgan!!), this was a bit of a disjointed mess. I give them points for trying to bring in her royal blue color and strap detail into his look but...this was just odd. And to top it off, his satin lapel-ed vest kept riding up through that "Pirates of the Caribbean"-like belt! I just didn't get it. Dump that vest, dump that belt and just keep that see-through super sexy plunging v-neck top. Add tiny royal blue crystals on it...and call it a COSTUME day! Merci.

ICE DANCE:
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of USA: Hubbell and Donohue skated their Short Dance to Samba: Le Serpent by Guem et Zaka; Rhumba: Cuando Calienta El Sol by Tayla Ferro; and Samba: Sambando by Los Ritmos Calientas. I liked the deep violet/purple/lilac colors. Her sexy open side-and-back asymmetrical one-sleeved dress was HOT. I also liked the sequin detail and paillettes at the hem. Even Zach looked great! His v-neck top was sexy and included color and sequin elements taken from her costume. They get a 9/10 in my Costume Book!

Free Skate to Across the Sky - Instrumental by Rag N'Bone Man and Caught Out in the Rain by Beth Hart: For their Free Skate, I liked Madison's dress but Zachary's black-and-white outfit left a lot to be desired. First, her deep gray sequined dress was beautiful, fluid and fashionable. But his...well, it didn't live up to her costume; instead, he looked like a waiter at a restaurant AFTER the restaurant closed! The Lycra jacket was flimsy and the open shirt look was inelegant. STEP IT UP Zachary. You deserve better!

Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker of USA: Hawayek and Baker skated their Free Skate to Liebestraum arranged by Maxime Rodriguez. These lilac-hued costumes were pretty and worked nicely with the program. Her dress had beautiful movement and gathered draping and I liked his deep lilac colored pants that went well with her costume's coloring.

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Canada: For their Short Dance to Bolero: Tango by Diane Reeves; and Mambo: Do You Only Wanna Dance performed by Julia Daivel Big Band, this Canadian Ice Dance couple went a bit "Carmen Miranda"...at least she did. I get that the themes are Mambo/Samba/Rhumba, etc. and there are so many costume variations on that...but Kaitlyn's sequined flower dress--while beautifully draped--was a bit "Miss Brazil" for me (yes, even ME!). I didn't dislike it, and do think it's kinda gorgeous but (maybe it's just her blond hair/porcelain skin) it looks like a "Latina Costume" on her. Andrew--on the other hand--looked sexy and perfect. The see-through shirt (On Trend!); the SUPER TIGHT tuxedo striped pants (Hello!)...he looked MUY BIEN!

Free Dance to Je suis malade performed by Lara Fabian: For their Free Dance, they wore these looks. She wore a scarlet red cowl-neck slip dress (with an intentionally off-the-shoulder strap). And he wore a blue-gray tuxedo shirt and deep gray pants. If you think you have seen these before, well...maybe: This was the same Free Skate music AND very similar COSTUMES they used back in the 2011-2012 Season (also used in for Exhibition Program in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013). The difference (I think) is that this new costume isn't beaded at the satin cowl front top section (as opposed to the earlier version) and maybe his pants are not as "boot-cut" in the leg. Here are the "earlier costumes":

2012 ISU Four Continents (left) and 2012 NHK Trophy (right)

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada: One word: WOEW! I would have put TEN PHOTOS of them and these looks but I didn't want to overwhelm y'all! So, I just added four! In case you missed it: I LOVED these! Canada's Virtue and Moir wore these costumes for their Short Dance to Samba: Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones; Rhumba: Hotel California by The Eagles; and Cha Cha: Oye Como Va by Santana. Tessa's design involved a see-through cheetah print look with fringe and GORGEOUS gold jeweled sequined embellishment. It also featured a very sexy scooped open back. I loved it all! And then, there was Scott: Oh Huney! That sequined black-and-nude top is EVERYTHING! Both looked Samba and Rhumba Fabuloso! (and can we discuss Scott's KABUNKADUNK THIGHS!!!???)

Free Skate to Roxanne and Come What May (from "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack): For their Free Skate, they wore these looks. For Tessa, it was a Cabernet red stretch velvet costume that showcased her fat-free fab figure with a scooped-side and open back. It was very "Azzedine Alaia/late 90's" Fab. And Scott, he donned a super tight mock-neck top and skin-tight pants. Even though the shade of his top didn't even match the shade of pants...and there were no crystals or any Cabernet-matching color on his look...They looked PERFECT.

ICE STYLE.....Grand Prix Audi Cup of China 2017 FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: LADIES

Prima Skater-ina: Alina Zagitova of Russia during her Free Skate at Audi Cup of China 2017

The third of six ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events/competitions--the Audi Cup of China 2017--occurred this past weekend in Beijing China at the Capital Gymnasium. Since it its Grand Prix of Figure Skating Season, it's also the season I discuss the ICE STYLE--or figure skating costumes of the LADIES, MEN, PAIRS and ICE DANCE.

Operatic China: Chinese Opera show at Audi Cup of China 2017, Capital Gymnasium Beijing People's Republic of China

I've talked about the Rostelecom Cup of Russia 2017 and Skate Canada International 2017 on my BLOGHERE.  So...now it is time to discuss the COSTUMES of Cup of China 2017. I'll start with the LADIES...

Now, I have already discussed the costumes of...
Wakaba Higuchi of Japan: I LOVED them both--Click HERE to read my thoughts!

Now--time to discuss skaters' costumes I haven't talked about yet:
Mai Mihara of Japan: For her Short Program to Libertango by Astor Piazzolla, Mai wore this fun "Tango"-inspired costume. The look featured a black stretch lace costume with crystals, red flowers and fringe. It was fun, I really liked the frilly movement and her deep red lipstick added a strong air of Argentine Fabuloso!

Free Program to Gabriel's Oboe (from "The Mission" soundtrack) by Ennio Morricone: This was a BEAUTIFUL costume! Outstanding in it's design, execution, the tie-dye-looking colors...and the silver jeweled sequins were Haute! My favorite part was that top/torso section; it looked luxe and on another Figure Skating Costume Level!

Dabin Choi of South Korea: Dabin skated her Short Program to Papa Can You Hear Me (soundtrack) in this mint-and-white costume. The design featured an ombre-like effect, GORGEOUS turquoise-colored sequins at the Empire/underbust and neckline and flared bell sleeves. The costume was sweet and had slight references to the Hanbok (traditional Korean dress), and still went well with the skate and music (although it was more Barbra Streisand 1960's as opposed to Barbra Streisand Yentil!). I especially loved the attached elastic thumb-strap (right photo above), that was sewn in to keep the sleeves from flailing around. Now, THAT, kids is intelligent costume designing.

Free Skate to Seven Gypsy Melodies and Songs My Mother Taught Me by Antonin Dvorak: This blue and black sequined costume was beautiful and expensive looking. I especially was fond of that open back! This is a design straight out of very high-end red carpet gowns! Whoever designed this: Well done!

Elena Radionova of Russia: Elena skated her Short Program to Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin. In case this sounds familiar, it is! This is the same Short program music she used last season. It worked well for her then so--like SOOOOO MANY skaters are doing this Olympic Season--she's brought it back! But THANK GOODNESS (unlike many other skaters, much to my dismay!), she had a NEW COSTUME (Yeayyy Elena!). I thought this gold and black bugle-beaded fringed number was EVERYTHING! It was so Razzle Dazzle 1920's Flapper Diva: I LOVED IT! In case you're wondering what she wore last year at Cup of China 2016 for this same "Porgy and Bess" Program...

Last year's Flapper...I like the new 2017-2018 Season's costume BEST! What do you guys think?

Free Skate to Historia de un amor 2: Another GREAT costume from Russian figure skater Elena Radionova! The sequined design featured an illusion base that extended to her neck and back and STUPENDOUS red and black mini paillettes. I loved how they jutted out individually onto the upper bust and neckline.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia: Elizaveta skated her Short Program to Pisando Flores by Ara Malikian, Gypsy-like music which went well with her gold and black costume. There were slight nods to a fab Gypsy as well as Tango Queen in her fringed design. My favorite part was that neckline and gold applique/embroidery in the front torso.

Free Skate to Erinnerung performed by Efim Jourist Quartett: The music is from a Ukrainian composer, accordionist and bajan player and has an air of Gypsy-meets-Cirque du Soleil quality. And naturally, so did her costume. I liked this costume from far away. Up close, the multicolored tie-dye effect looked a bit childish but far away, the entire design was stage--or shall I say--ice impacting!

Gabrielle Daleman of Canada: Canadian figure skater Gabrielle Daleman skated her Short Program to Habanera (from "Carmen") by George Bizet. Immediately (naturally!) I knew the music and it was refreshing to see that this was NOT your typical "Carmen"; there was no red rose in her hair and no toreador bolero jacket among all the other "Carmen" costume stereotypes. I liked how fresh and modern this red cold-shoulder costume was. Gabrielle was the "Millennial Carmen".

Free Skate to Gladiator Rhapsody and Now We Are Free (from "Gladiator" soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer--One word: WOW! First, I just loved how strong and powerful this costume look was. Gabrielle was like a SuperWoman Skater in this! The gold sequined applique and red costume had hints of yes,  "Wonder Woman" (the elongated arm cuffs and curved bust-line bustier!) as well as a Gladiator Goddess. I loved the nude illusion neck with sequined edge trim that extended to the back...and THAT MAKEUP: It was EVERYTHING huney! I also really liked her ponytail/braided hairstyle.

Alina Zagitova of Russia: OK, first off: Alina is AMAZING!!!! Every female figure skater needs to watch out! Anyhow...moving on--time to discuss her costumes. For her Short Program to Black Swan, Alina wore this GORGEOUS sequined and tulle design. I absolutely LOVED this costume--the hand-cut ballerina tutu, the silver and black paillettes...the sleeve/arm details...it was Haute Figure Skating COUTURE! This may be her first Senior Grand Prix Season but darlings, someone is spending A LOT of money on her costumes. And very smart to do so.

Free Skate to Don Quixote by Leon Minkus: Another excellent costume from figure skating phenom Alina Zagitova. She looked like a Prima Ballerina in this absolutely beautiful costume. The ballet theme started with her Short program continued here and reached a zenith in this red and gold sequined design. But I have to say, she skated so incredible that well, she probably could have put on a red and gold garbage bag...and I would have been: OK!

Pikachu Love: Japanese figure skater Marin Honda holding a stuffed Pikachu at Audi Cup of China 2017

**NEXT UP, it's THE MEN of Audi Cup of China 2017 Costumes!

Saturday night were the Finals of Miss Earth 2017 Beauty Pageant--considered one of the "Grand Slam International Beauty Contests", along with Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Grand International. The contest was held at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines and the hometown girl won: Karen Ibasco, Miss Earth Philippines was crowned Miss Earth 2017

Proud Filipina: Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco of the Philippines holding the Philippines flag, along with (L to R) Miss Earth Air Nina Robertson (Australia), Miss Earth Fire Lada Akimova (Russia), and Miss Earth Water Juliana Franco (Colombia)--Miss Earth 2017 Finals, Mall of Asia Arena Philippines

She bested 85 other ladies from all over the world and this is THE THIRD Filipino contestant to win the international beauty pageant in FOUR years (last year's winner, Katherine Espin was from Ecuador)...

Swimming Karen: Karen Ibasco Miss Earth Philippines during the Swimsuit Competition of the Miss Earth 2017 Finals, Mall of Asia Arena Philippines

Karen is 26 years old,  stands 170 M (5' 7") tall and has a bachelor's and master's degrees in applied physics major in medical physics. She was a contestant in Binibining Pilipinas 2016 (Miss Universe Philippines) where she didn't place. She then went on to compete for Miss Earth Philippines 2017 in July, winning the crown.

Top Two: Miss Earth Colombia Juliana Franco (L) and Miss Earth Philippines (R)--Miss Earth 2017 Crowning Night Finals, Mall of Asia Arena Philippines

Now, time to discuss THE FINALS EVENING GOWNS!!!
Gown Gals: Miss Earth 2017 contestants in their evening gowns, awaiting the announcement of the Top 16 Semifinalists--Miss Earth 2017 Crowning Night Finals, Mall of Asia Arena Philippines

Golden Top Four: (L to R) Miss Earth Colombia Juliana Franco, Miss Earth Philippines Karen Ibasco, Miss Earth Russia Lana Akimova and Miss Earth Australia Nina Robertson--Miss earth 2017 Crowning Night Finals, Mall of Asia Arena Philippines

During the Finals of Miss Earth 2017, the contestants all came out in their evening gowns when it was time to announce the Top 16 Semifinalists. Then, later, they changed into gold (or yellow) colored gowns. I LOVE this aspect of making all the contestants wear same-coloring gowns at the end. It's different and does give a look of "Gown Unity" at the end. But...at least for an actual Evening Gown Competition portion, the Designer/Red Carpet Commentator/Pageant Fan in me does like the individuality of different colored gowns (or at least, having no "gown boundaries"). Anyhow...here are my thoughts (and SCORES!) of the Top 16 Semifinalist's Gowns. I'll begin with the eventual Winner "Miss Earth Philippines":

Miss Earth Philippines Karen Ibasco (and eventual Miss Earth 2017)--Let me begin with her first gown: I was not really excited about Karen's first dress(top photo)--a pink sequined-and-satin organza number--it lacked any stage presence and had little impact. It was also REALLY LOW on her front torso. Notice that almost 4" of space from her armpit to the edge of the strapless gown; that should only be about 1 1/2"-2" of space. It just seemed very low.

But, I did like the gold colored SECOND GOWN she wore. The style was chic and looked well-made. Two things though: I wish she would not have worn those nude PLATFORM heals (I am NOT A FAN!) and that slit was VERY HIGH...almost TOO HIGH and at several moments in the pageant, I swear I saw her Cha-cha (Lady bits). I think she knew because she kept that sash very close to that area making sure there was no "exposure". But...this second golden gown does make my 4th Best Gown.
Score: 8.90

1.  Miss Earth Vietnam Le Thi Ha Thu: My Number One Gown Choice was the one worn by Miss Earth Vietnam. This off-the-shoulder blue sequined gown was COUTURE FAB! It had amazing stage impact, looked great on the contestant and was draped beautifully. I also LOVED the "fireworks"-like sequins. this was a ballgown to SHUT DOWN all other ballgowns!
Score: 9.20

It reminded me of that GORGEOUS Zuhair Murad "Fireworks"-inspired Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2017 Collection

2. Miss Earth Venezuela Ninoska Vasquez: Next on the Best Gowns of Miss Earth 2017 Finals was the one worn by Miss Earth Venezuela. Ninoska wore this strapless red duchesse satin gown designed by Venezuelan designer Hugo Espina. This gown was definitely impacting (the color! the Couture-worthy draping and folding!), and fit her very well. I love DRAMA in a gown, but only if it's done right. This was done well and worthy enough of being my Top 2 Favorite. If there was any wish, I would have liked that slit/opening to not be SO OPEN. And those were DEFINITELY NOT the right shoes for this kind of gown. REPEAT AFTER ME: Strappy Heals with NO PLATFORM! But...the cut, color, and beautiful drape of this gown...
Score: 9. 00

3. Miss Earth Thailand Paweensouda Droin: The gorgeous Paweensouda (who ALL the Pageant Watchers thought was going to win this pageant!) looked elegant, regal and very pretty in this choice of a royal blue satin gown with sequined embellishment and China Silk back "cape" (top photo). This was a well-cut gown, perfect length (no tacky platform shoes showing!) and color was nice for her. I also thought the gold gown choice was "Pageant Pretty". It wasn't anything extraordinary--gown-wise--but did the job! I'm mainly scoring the royal blue style...
Score: 8.99

4. See Winner, "Miss Earth Philippines" at top of post as my 4th Pick for Best Gown of Miss Earth 2017 Finals.

5. Miss Earth Guatemala Maria Jose Castaneda: Maria Jose wore this golden shimmering gown as she was named in the Top 16. The style was nice, had stage impact and the length was perfect. She was one of the better representatives from the Central American nation in a long time! Someone should send this beautiful woman to the next Miss Universe ASAP.
Score: 8.90

6. Miss Earth Angola Ermelinda De Matos: Ermelinda is so beautiful! She looks like a Barbie Doll! For the Miss Earth 2017 Finals, she wore this silver sequined gown with a creme-colored tulle back overskirt. The gown was right for her and looked stunning but then...

She RUINED it with those UBER PLATFORM Stripper Pumps! WHYYYYYY?????????? If she just wore non-platform strappy silver heels, the length of the gown would have been perfect! But somehow she felt as if she HAD TO do this! No Mija. No.
Score: 8.35 (I'm trying to not look at those TACKY shoes!)

7. Miss Earth USA Andreia Gibau: Miss Earth USA wore this fringe-tastic royal blue gown for the Miss Earth 2017 Finals. The dress had a Las Vegas Showgirl-meets-Figure Skating Costume-meets-Cher quality that, while it was kind of a mess...it was kind of FAB as well. I think that Andreia made it FABULOUS for sure.
Score: 8.20

8. Miss Earth Cameroon Angelene Kossinda: I liked this golden colored gown worn by Miss Erath Cameroon. The color and the skin-tight "Nude Dress" look was on-trend. This was nice. I just wished it was slightly longer and that her breasts weren't so "accented" by sea-shell-looking sequin applique. Once again, this verged on slightly Figure Skating Costume territory...as well as a costume for a Caribbean nation.
Score: 8.10

9. Miss Earth Colombia Juliana Franco: Ninth on my List of Gowns of the Miss Earth 2017 Finals was this pink concoction worn by Juliana Franco Miss Earth Colombia. The little boy growing up in Venezuela watching those Miss Venezuela Beauty Pageants appreciated the almost "Vintage"-like quality of this pink lace sequined applique gown with stiffened overskirt. It was SOOO Pageant Retro, it brought back to...

Ines Maria Calero "Miss Venezuela 1987" at Miss Universe 1987

And even Ines Maria Calero's wasn't all stiffened. But yes, overall, Miss Earth Colombia's gown was VERY "80's Pageant" but at least it was stage impacting and fit well, and for that...
Score: 8.15

10. Miss Earth Tonga Diamond Langi: I actually liked this gold overskirt ballgown style on Miss Earth Tonga, I was very impressed with the dress and in particular, her sleek styling (loved the hair and makeup!). The length was nice and the dress style itself seemed Haute. However, she lost me when I zero-ed in on the back...

CANNOT ZIP IT UP! Look closely...yes, the gown wasn't closed correctly. Listen, I get that this was probably a sample size gown and did not fit the beautiful "Miss Earth Tonga". And therefore, we end up with this above. But...that's NO EXCUSE when you are competing at an international level. Sorry huney. But at least, the overall look was nice and worthy of my...
Score: 8.00

11. Miss Earth Russia Lada Akimova: Russia's Lada look radiant in this royal blue duchesse satin fit-and-flare gown. From the front, I was a big fan. The color was great, it fir nicely, and the silhouette was regal. Naturally, she had to turn around and...

THE DREADED HANG TAPE! Listen, as a designer, I have been there/done that in terms of sending out models on my runway shows and then seeing photos of the hang-tape hanging out of my gowns. But..I have learned, so now I either have the dressers just CUT THEM OFF (to then sew back on later!) or, I have them hand-sewn onto the dress to ensure that they will NOT pop out. Now, when it comes to being on an international stage at the Miss earth 2017 Finals, NO ONE should see hang tape. Period.
Score: 8.00

Provincial Dress: And then, Miss Earth Russia wore this canary yellow satin dress that looked more "Farmers Daughter" (I swear it's POLYESTER! And what is with the rosette trim at the bottom of the skirt?) that International Beauty Contest Finalist. Just sayin'

12. Miss Earth Switzerland Sarah Laura Peyrel: Sarah Laura is gorgeous. And this red crinkled applique gown made my No. 12/16 spot here in my Miss Earth 2017 Gowns Recap. At first glimpse, I thought I would like it but then...the fabric was a bit too "Happy Home-sewer" texture-y and...what is with that really low armhole/sleeve?
Score: 7.98

13. Miss Earth Australia Nina Robertson: Half Filipina/half Australian Nina Roberston was a big favorite at the Miss Earth 2017 Finals. This above is what she wore as her first Evening Gown. Four words: It. Was. A. Mess. I'll start with the good: I liked the golden color  but after that...it went Tacky-licious BAAAD: There were feathered cuffs on her sleeves, awkward looking iridescent tulle side godets and then...

She wore these TACKY STRIPPER SIX INCH PLATFORM SHOES!!! And I could see them! There is nothing that says "I am SOOOO SHORT and trying to compensate" than wearing these. Listen, there is NOTHING wrong in not being a six foot tall beauty contestant. But then: OWN IT HUNEY!  These were so tacky! And what hurt me most was that Nina is so pretty!
Score: 7. 50

Better: Well, at least she made it up during the end with this other gold gown. It was slightly more stylish and I couldn't see those TACKY shoes!

14. Miss Earth Czech Republic Iva Uchytilova: Where do I begin? The off-the-shoulder peasant blouse-like top and then THAT skirt with a side opening that was DANGEROUSLY risking exposure of her Lady parts. On a positive note: THOSE SHOES WERE PERFECT!!!!!
Score: 7.48

15. Miss Bosnia & Herzegovina Lela Karagic: We are almost at the end of my No's 1-16 List of Miss earth 2017 Finals Gowns. At #15 is this nude/golden/blush design worn by Miss Earth Bosnia & Herzegovina. Once again, we saw that weird crinkle fabric (like Miss Earth Switzerland's) but this time it was juxtaposed with nude illusion in a manner that definitely looked like a Figure Skating Costume-meets-a-Pageant Queen. And not in a good way. And then, she wore...

THESE SILVER 1970's DISCO PUMPS! How do you say "NOOOO!!!!!!!" in Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian????(the 3 official languages of Bosnia & Herzegovina).
Score: 7.45

16. Miss Earth Netherlamds Faith Landman: Lastly, we have Miss Earth Netherlands in this creme/golden gown. It featured EVERYTHING AND the kitchen sink! Not only was it a Mermaid silhouette, it was also Fit-and-flare, and it had exaggerated "Angel Wing" cape-sleeves...and if that wasn't enough (EDIT! EDIT!!!), there were cascade ruffles at the bottom of the skirt. No. No. And No. Sorry Miss Earth Netherlands. Congratulations on making the Top 16 of Miss earth 2017 but...
Score: 7.15

Man of España: Javier Fernandez of Spain during his Free Skate, Audi cup of China 2017, Beijing People's Republic of China

Continuing with my ICE STYLE Costumes Recap BLOG on ISU Grand Prix of figure Skating Audi Cup of China 2017, I have talked about the LADIES HERE so now, it is time to discuss THE MEN! Let's begin with USA's Vincent Zhou:

Vincent Zhou of USA: Vincent skated his Short Program to Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. He wore this lilac-hued shirt and dark lilac/gray skin-tight pants. The shirt featured beautiful crystals throughout but it was the white-shirt underneath that made it slightly too "Casual Friday's" for my taste.

Free Skate to Moulin Rouge (soundtrack): Zhou wore this red-and-black costume for his "Moulin Rouge" Free Skate. While I appreciated that he (or his costume design team) stepped it up several notches from his short program costume...but he looked a little too much like one of the background dancers of the "Like A Virgin" segment of the film (photo above). But maybe that was the point.

Boyang Jin of China: For his Short Program to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (soundtrack) by Tan Dun, he wore this all black costume that had the detailing of a traditional Chinese robe, but reinterpreted in a modern way. The entire look was slim, sleek and minimal. I LIKEY!

Free Skate to Mars (from "The Planets") by Gustav Holst and Stars Wars (soundtrack) by John Williams: This white top and black pants design was almost like a "design extension" of his Short Program costume. I liked the double-breasted look and crystal embellishment. Once again, it was Minimal Costume Design...at its best.

Han Yan of China: Han Yan skated his Short Program to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri in this light gray top and dark gray pants. The top had pretty crystals on the neck, shoulder and sleeves. I liked all that detail up top and I also appreciated how snug his top was. This was a good example of a Costume Look that was similar in its style to Vincent Zhou's but...was done better. Not my favorite color combination, but it was nice none the less.

Free Skate to I'll Take Care Of You performed by Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa: For his Free Skate, he wore this wine-red dress shirt, black-and-gray vest (with black pants, of course). Overall, it was a nice costume for him. There were sprinkles of silver crystals throughout the vest which added nice sparkle to the costume. Also...I wonder if his new silver-colored hair is part of the look? Very On-trend Millennial.

Kevin Reynolds of Canada: Kevin is kind of known for his costumes. For his Short Program to Moanin' by Art Blakey, however, there was really none--except for a white dress shirt, a bold blue tie, black pants and...OH GOD WHAT IS THAT BELT???!!!! I cannot believe he fell for the dreaded Male Figure Skater Ross Dress For Less 90's Belt Virus!!! I think I owned that belt...in 1994. Please Kevin, give it to Out of the Closet! ASAP!

Free Skate to The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace by Karl Jenkins--For his Free Skate, Kevin was more on his comfortable "Costume Territory" and as a fan of Figure Skating and Figure Skating Costumes...I liked this! I liked all the detail of the jacket--especially those epaulets and gold embroidery. It also fit him quite nice and worked with the music. I know that maybe he looked a teeny bit too much like "The Nutcracker" Prince but hey, I'll take that over a 1994-like Ross Dress For Less belt ANY DAY!

Max Aaron of USA: Max wore this black pants and draped gray knit top to his Bring Him Home and One More Day (from "Les Miserables") by Claude-Michel Schoenberg Short Program. This look was very Max Aaron in it's gray/black colors and sleek costume look. I liked the cowl draped neckline and asymmetrical hem especially. It added a little bit of interest to his costume. I also have to add that the design reminded me of...

Draped Boys: Joshua Farris of USA and Daisuke Takahashi of Japan during the 2013 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating season

Free Skate to The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber: For his Free Skate, he went typical Max Aaron gray-and-black (of course) with this look. It was not very exciting but then again, Aaron is not know for his exciting costumes. The look, however, was a nice departure from what we usually see from skaters doing "The Phantom of the Opera". This off-center closure, heathered gray top with black pants design was like the "Modern Dance" interpretation of the musical.

Javier Fernandez of Spain: Spaniard Javier Fernandez brought back his "Charlie Chaplin" program (as many of the skaters are doing for this Olympic Season) from the 2012-2013 Season. Back then, it was his Free Skate and now, it for his Short Program. And as much as I liked his "Chaplin" costume back then, I am happy that he wore a new costume. For his Short Program to Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin soundtrack), he wore this sleeker-and-sexier Charlie Chaplin look comprised of snug gray pants, a second-skin black stretch velvet jacket and white shirt. The jacket had nice details like sequined trim, satin lapels and a fab flower-like lapel "rosette". It was sharp and fit him well and still had elements of the character he was playing.

And...in case you were wondering...
This is his old Charlie Chaplin costume from his 2012-2013 Season Free Skate Program

Free Skate to Man of La Mancha: For his Free Skate, he wore this "Conquistador"-style costume appropriate for the musical. Javier's 15th century-like doublet and shirt had great little details such as the back loops, side sleeve buttons and dramatic stand-up collar. I liked the fact that it was "costume-y" but not too Costume-y (if that makes any sense). On a non-costume note: Let's hope the next time he skates, he does a better job. Go Javi!!!

Pas de Deux: Ice Dance pair Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France at Grand Prix of Figure Skating Audi Cup of China 2017

Wrapping up my COSTUMES RECAP of this past weekend's Grand Prix of Figure Skating Audi Cup of China 2017, I've discussed the LADIES COSTUMES HERE, the MEN'S COSTUMES HERE and now it's time to talk about the PAIRS and ICE DANCE. Let's begin with the...

PAIRS:
Valentina Marchei and Ondrej Hotarek of Italy: Marchei and Hotarek skated their Short Program to Tu vuo fa l'Americano by Renato Carosone. The music and program  was SOOOO Italian, they should have served the judges some Limoncello after they skated! The colors and fun presentation were a welcomed respite from the usually more serious Pairs programs. Ondrej wore black pants, tight white dress shirt and red polka dotted neck-scarf. He looked like the waiter of a fun pizza restaurant. And Valentina wore this red mini dress using the same polka dotted print for the skirt.

The look included an odd drop-waist style with sequined belt/trim, which was also seen at her neck. I liked the neck detail but the back was odd, at best. The back closure looked wonky and as if it was sewn at the last minute and then there were these nude elastic straps holding up the back neck piece. It all looked kind of unfinished to be honest.

Free Skate to Amarcord by Nino Rota: Once again, Marchei and Hotarek went the Italiano route; this time for their Free Skate, they skated to the music of the Academy Award-winning Federico Fellini film "Amarcord". They were bold and fun in their "Harlequin" print embellished costumes in black, red and white. It was kooky and slightly "Circus"-like but visually, at least it got me to pay attention. I wished his vest (which matched her dress) was tighter...

I did LOVE how the harlequin diamond "print" on her costume were all made from sequined crystals---something that I really couldn't tell until the camera got up close. I wish they would have used the same treatment for his vest.

Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise of Italy: Italians Della Monica and Guarise skate their Short Program to Magnificat by Mina. But frankly, I could CARE LESS what they skated to when they looked LIKE THIS: HOT! HOT! HOT! I loved these lavender costumes featuring ombre-dye coloring and sequined applique embellishments. I liked her little costume with long sleeves and handkerchief-hemmed skirt section. But can we discuss MATTEO GUARISE!!??? Mamma mia!!! His body is INSANE! Oh, and yes, I loved his costume. First, the fit was perfection. And it was great how somehow the dyeing of the shirt almost created (or enhanced) his already six-pack abs! I also loved...

The back! It's so great when a costume is fab all-around: The perfect 360 degree Costume! And I also appreciate when the guy on a Pairs couple isn't just given a black shirt/black pants and calling it a "Costume Day". Grazie Mille!

Free Skate to The Tree Of Life by Roberto Cacciapagua: Well, looks like Della Monica and Guarise did it again...Costume wise! These were two fabulous costumes from the Italians, worn for their Free Skate. The colors were vibrant and ice-impacting. They looked like a wonderful and sexy sea/earth flora-and-fauna God and Goddess in these. I also loved...

The silver, turquoise, aqua and baby blue crystals throughout their costumes. The front sequined detail was beautiful and that jeweled web-like strap back on Nicole was a FAB detail! These two and their costumes make it SOOOOO worth it to spend the hours and hours I spend writing these "Ice Style" costumes blogs!

Ashley Cain and Timothy Leduc of USA: Americans Cain and Leduc wore these costumes for their Short Program to I'll Take Care of You by Joe Bonamassa. I liked seeing these modern and sleek unitard/jumpsuits on them. The looks were done in black with aquamarine crystals scattered throughout. I loved her front and back silver sequined panels which added interest to her costume as well as elongated her body. While I also liked his sequined front torso embellishments I wished he didn't have that gauze-y blouse over it. He needs to just take that off and go without!

Xiaoyu Yu and Zhang Hao Zhang of China: They skated their Short Program to Swan Lake by Petr I. Tchaikovski in these costumes above. I thought these were elegant and quite nice. Her white "Swan" costume wasn't your typical feathered design one sees and I appreciated that. I also liked the subtle sequin detail on his black look.

Free Skate to Star Wars (soundtrack): I LOVED this blue chiffon costume on her! The gathered bodice design featured gorgeous sequined trim at the plunging neckline, armholes and waist and a fabulous neck drape. This dress could easily go from ice to the red carpet!

Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China: This Chinese pairs couple is REALLY EXCITING ME in terms of costume commentating! They are bringing the Haute in Haute Couture Figure Skating Costumes. For their Short Program to Hallelujah, they wore these gorgeous looks. Her scarlet red costume was BEAUTIFUL; I loved the sequin work that went from heavy to light--as if a gorgeous Swarovski crystal mirror had broken and ended up beautifully on her costume! And he was not left behind with a beautifully-embellished "Dragon" sequined top. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Free Skate to Violin Fantasy on Puccini's Turandot by Vanessa-Mae and Nessun Dorma (from "Turandot") by Giacomo Puccini, performed by Luciano Pavarotti: These costumes worn for their Free Skate were two of the MOST BEAUTIFUL COSTUMES I have seen in a long time on Pairs skaters. They were bold, right for the music, looked super ice skating COUTURE...I can go on and one. I loved the sequined applique on her gorgeous red dress but that gold and silver dragon on his shirt was EVERYTHING!

ICE DANCE:
Madison Chock and Evan Bates of USA: Chock and Bates wore these Latino Caliente costumes for their Short Dance to Salsa: Aguanile by Mark Anthony; Rhumba: Que lio by Mark Anthony; Samba: Vivir mi vida by Mark Anthony. The colors were nice and the details--like her loose fringe and asymmetrical upper torso styling--could make the very talented costume designers of "Dancing With the Stars" envious that they didn't make them! (I hear Madison designs all their costumes). I also liked how Evan was looking sexier this year with the skin tight top and that HOT plunging v-neck. Muy bien.

Free Dance to Imagine by John Lennon: Chock and Bates wore these blue costumes for their Free Skate. I liked these costumes as well. The blue colors were pretty and the sequin detail was beautiful. There was a somber yet elegant glamour to these that I admired. And Thank you Evan for that plunging neckline! (or shall I thank Madison??)

Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter of USA: Americans McNamara and Carpenter wore these looks for their fun Short Dance to Rhumba: Mambo Italiano by Bob Merrill; Slow Rhumba: El Perdedor by Enrique Inglesias feat. Antonio Solis and Samba: Big Bagz by Alex Romano. I thought these were great costumes that looked "Senior Level" and had great sequined detail. I especially liked her "Gladiator Goddess"-like detailing, front bustier gathering and "open sides" design. I also loved  his sequined vest top. We are seeing a bit more skin on the men so he did look too covered up, however.

Tiffany Zahorski and  Jonathan Guerreiro of Russia: If there was any question that the theme is RHUMBA/SAMBA/SALSA for this season's Ice Dance Short Dance, well...take a look at this Russian Ice Dance couple! They skated their Short Dance to Samba: Hip Hip Chin Chin performed by Club des Belugas ; Rhumba: Volveras performed by Gloria Estefan; and Samba: Batucada Brasiliera performed by Samba Brazilian Batucada Band. Tiffany looked like a fab samba dancer at the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony with her super vibrant colorful fringe-tastic costume: LOVE. And Jonathan--while not really donning a "costume" perhaps--was still right as the male partner to her sexy HOT HOT HOT look. In this dance...it is ALL ABOUT her!

Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France: Here is another example where the female is the Costume Star. For their Short Dance to Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran and Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, remastered by Karl Hugo, the French Ice Dance couple of Papadakis and Cizeron wore these costumes above. Gabrielle looked like someone at the top of a Brazilian Carnival Float--and THAT IS the point! Loved her two piece sequined and fringed look. The gold and green colors were great. And Guillaume...sleeveless, tight, Muy Sexy Le Smoking Skating Tuxedo. Très Chic and Très Sleek.

Free Skate to Piano Sonata N. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27, No 2. "Moonlight Sonata", Adagio Sostenuto, by Ludwig van Beethoven performed by Steve Anderson
"Moonlight Sonata", Presto Agitato by Ludwig van Beethoven--Two words: JUST GORGEOUS. These costumes were subtle, beautiful, elegant, and PERFECT. Her softly flowing chiffon dress with Lycra bodysuit was sublime and fluttered with the dance like a gorgeous bird flying through the wind. And Guillaume...

That side cowl drape top was FIGURE SKATING COUTURE Fab! Sexy, elegant, draped. I love that for the Free Dance, HIS costume was actually THE STAR.

Merci Papadakis et Cizeron...pour les beaux Patinage Couture ! XO
