ICE STYLE.....ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Trophée Eric Bompard 2013 Costumes Recap Part One: Ladies and Pairs!

Bonjour Trophée Eric Bompard 2013: Gold medalist Ashley Wagner from the US (left) and Russian Pairs skaters Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov (left)

The fifth of six international figure skating competition of the 2013-2014 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating--2013 Trophée Eric Bompard--occurred over the weekend at the Palais Omnisports de Bercy in Paris France

Paris France--site of the Trophée Eric Bompard ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2013/2014

I've discussed the Costumes of the previous four Grand Prix Figure Skating Competitions--Skate America, Skate Canada, Cup of China and NHK Trophy here on my blog (see Categories Section "Ice Style" on the right of this blog), so naturally, it's now time to talk about the costumes seen at 2013 Trophée Eric Bompard--Let's begin with the LADIES:
LADIES:
Mirror Mirror, I See Crystals: Ashley Wagner, Trophée Eric Bompard 2013

Ashley Wagner USA, Short Program: Ashely wore this black costume for her Short Program to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd. The costume featured black stretch chiffon, double-layer "skirt" and panels with silver crystal trimmed details. I really liked this costume because it really reflected the theme of her music. She also could have easily worn this if she was skating to say, Tchaikovsky "Swan Lake" as well! I especially loved the various sizes of the jeweled crystals and how the neck detail looked like a built-in diamond necklace (that was probably the point!).

Free Skate: For her Free Skate to Music from Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev, Ashley (wait for it!) CHANGED her costume. And let me tell you, it was definitely a "New & Improved" one! The costume was a deep wine red and had interesting curved and scroll-like panels accented by an intricate display of crystal work. It definitely had a "Romeo & Juliet" feel and I liked the new color. Her previous Free Skate costume this season for the same program and music was this:

Ashley Wagner at Skate America 2013i n her Free Skate Costume--I liked this but...I like the new red one more. The Empire-cut bright coral-colored one above seemed "sweet and fun" compared to the new, more serious and dramatic wine red-colored costume. All of Ashley's costumes, by the way, were designed by Jan Longmire

Mae Berenice Meite France, Short Program:Mae Berenice skated her Short Program to "The Question of U" by Prince in this bright pink costume that featured an asymmetrical neckline, one sleeve, and crystals. The bright color really works on her and I liked the asymmetry of the neckline as well. Also, I'm glad she didn't wear PURPLE--being that her music was Prince, that would have been so predictable and expected.

Anna Pogorilaya Russia, Short Program: Anna skated her Short Program to "El Choclo" (Kiss of Fire) performed by Ikuko Kawai. Her costume was BRIGHT, to say the least; it was a neon "Crayon" red sleeveless design with long matching gloves and a nude illusion "cut-out" accented with silver diamante crystals. While I like the color, I think that she may need some editing: those long gloves might be "too mucheey!". And I'm a bit confused by the uneven hem'ed "flaps" that are happening at her side upper hip area. What do you guys think of this costume? Is it a "Yeay" or "Nope!" ?

PAIRS:
Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov Russia, Short Program:For their Short Program to"Titine" from the Modern Times soundtrack by Stanley Black and "Paris by Night" (Je Cherche Apres Titine) by Bob Sinclair, this Russian Pair wore these costumes above. I really liked her black and white striped "one shoulder" costume which had diagonal striped panels covering the entire ensemble as well as matching "arm bands". I just had a problem with the fact that Yuri was in a black Lycra mock-neck tee and matching pants. And that's it. While Vera looked graphic and modern, he looked like a "International Male" catalog model from 1994. WHY do these Figure Skating Costume Designers--especially with Pairs--sometimes just GIVE UP....on what the guys wear. Is it the male figure skaters that push back against a more "stylish costume" and not the fault of the designers?

Free Skate: For their Free Skate to the "Polovtsian Dances" from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, they wore these costumes above. To start: at least this semi-elaborate costume above on Yuri made up for the non-costume he wore for his Short Program. The music they skated to--according to Wikipedia--comes from an opera which recounts the campaigns of Russian prince Igor Svyatoslavich against the Polovtsian tribes in 1185. I am guessing the costume designers wanted to interpret a little of the Medieval-like feel into the ensembles and play with some added "Spartacus/Spartan" touches as well. I liked their looks--they were strong, sexy and good for the music. And I have to add--on a separate note--Vera reminds me so much of...

90s Supermodel and actress Venezuelan-born beauty Patricia Velasquez (right)

Caydee Denney and John Coughlin USA, Free Skate: US pairs Denney and Coughlin skated their Free Skate toSelections from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Caydee's off-the-shoulder white costume featured beaded applique lace and chiffon and a built-in crystal necklace. John wore a black "tuxedo"-like look including a black fitted jacket, very snug pants and open wing-tip tuxedo shirt. I have to admit that style-wise, these were rather un-creative and I regret to say, not up to par with what I'd like to see from Olympic Pairs contenders. Ideally, I'd like to see his look a little more polished and hers, less 'Toddlers & Tiaras".

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford Canada, Short Program: For their Short program to "Tribute" by Eric Radford, Duhamel and Radford wore these pink and slate gray costumes above. To start, Eric's look was a bit of a yawn but on a plus side, it fit him very snugly showing off his very athletic build. Meagan, on the other hand (and Thank Goodness) was more creative and at the very least had some style appeal with the softly draped cowl front, fluttery skirt and sequined torso. However, in general, I'd also like to see these costumes more polished and certainly just a little more fabulous. Also, Meagan has the best arms in the business, and I don't like the pink illusion sleeves. Why cover her best asset? Speaking of FABULOUS....

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres France, Free Skate:BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! Now THIS is what I call fabulous Pairs Costumes! The French Figure Skating pair of James and Cipres dazzled in this costumes above for their Free Skate to Music from the Angels and Demons soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack by Clint Mansell. These were outstanding; the curved asymmetrical style lines, the expensive crystal work, the contrast in color between James and Cipres...

Close Up of Morgan Cipres' sequined costume

And more importantly, the MALE skater WENT all-out in his costume and it wasn't a boring black pants-and-top look. And he still looked AMAZING and perfect for the skate, music and overall presentation. I know the season isn't over yet but so far, they take the Best Figure Skating Costumes for Pairs Trophy...here on my Blog!

Canadian Male Figure Skater--and Gold medalist--Patrick Chan--Trophée Eric Bompard 2013

Top Three: (left to right) Silver medalist Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, gold medalist Patrick Chan of Canada, and bronze medalist Jason Brown of the US--Trophée Eric Bompard 2013

In my last post HERE, I recap'ed the "Costume Highlights" of this past weekend's Trophée Eric Bompard 2013Paris France of the Ladies and Pairs, so it's now time to talk about the MEN and ICE DANCE.I have discussed most--or at least--a lot of the men (and their costumes) here in my blog for this season's Grand Prix and you can see those reviews HERE (Skate America), HERE (Skate Canada), HERE (Cup of China) and HERE (NHK Trophy)...so for this one, I want to just talk about one guy and his Short Program costume I have not discussed and that's Yuzuru Hanyu:

Yuzuru Hanyu Japan, Short Program: I've discussed Yuzuru's Free Skate costume HERE so now I can talk about his Short Program look skated to "Parisian Walkways" by Gary Moore. I'd rather not "beat around the bush" and just come out and say it: I don't like it.He's wearing a tie-dye-like blue shirt, black pants and a "Ross For Less/Men's Warehouse" belt. Let me tell you: if any man wore this in Paris, he would be SCOFFED at. I'm not sure about any circumstances where this look is appropriate but I reiterate, NOT skating to music titled "Parisian Walkways". I don't expect Yuzuru to be wearing a Can-Can or Eiffel Tower costume but...even that would be better!

Ice Dance:
Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland Great Britain, Short Dance:For their Short Dance to "I Won't Dance" by Fred Astaire and "Swing Set" by Jurassic Five, these British Ice Dance pair went the bold and sparkly textured route. Penny's silver sequined lace costume was pretty and intricate. I also LOVED the silver hair accent. Nicholas was fun, graphic and "Fred Astaire" fab with his tuxedo shirt, sequined bow tie and white "braces"/suspenders. I liked these!

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron France, Free Dance:For their Free Dance to "Money" and "Hey You" by Pink Floyd, this French Ice Dance pair went all-out Versace in their costumes. I'm pretty sure Donatella did not design (I didn't see any PR releases stating so) these but the styling, silhouette, details...of these outfits are full-on Gianni Versace and Co. I really liked Gabriella's sexy red bustier-and-straps costume but Guillaume's seemed a bit 90's tacky-licious; I just wished his jacket didn't have nude colored panels. This is a rare moment here on my blog but...I wished that his jacket was all black (as you may know, I DETEST a male skater--Pairs and Ice Dance partner--wearing just a black top-and-pants look).

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov Russia, Short Dance: For their Short Dance to "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" by Sholom Secunda, Ilinykh and Katsalapov wore these fun 1920's-inspired costumes; they were very "Gatsby" fabulous! I really liked her pink dress with silver lace overlay and side slit. I'm not usually a fan of a big rose flower detail like this but...I think it worked for this program, music, costume and overall theme. Nikita's tuxedo look with mini bow tie was also pretty good.

Free Dance: I've discussed how much I love these costumes for Ilinykh and Katsalapov's Free Dance to Music from Swan Lake by TchaikovskyHERE when they skated at NHK Trophy Japan (right photo), but I noticed that for Trophée Eric Bompard Grand Prix 2013 (left photo), Elena did not wear the silver crown or the black gloves. It's not a  COSTUME CHANGE but...a Costume Edit...and I approve.

Speaking of Costume Change...
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir Canada, Free Dance: Canada's "Golden Kids" Virtue and Moir changed their costumes for the Free DancetoSeasons by Alexander Glazunov and "Piano Concerto in F-sharp minor" by Alexander Scriabin at Trophée Eric Bompard 2013. Tessa wore an emerald green dress with semi-circle skirt and sequined lace torso. Scott wore a white tuxedo shirt and black pants. This was different from what they had worn for their Free Dance this season so far:

Virtue and Moir Free Dance Costumes at Skate Canada 2013--I am not so much a fan of the new costumes and I admit, also the previous ones. It seems as if the Costume Designer took a nap. They're both mediocre. However (and big however), their skating and ice dance performance are just MAGICAL!

But before I got to that, I had a very special "Runway Walk-Off", involving the dads who attended the FIDM Los Angeles Fall 2013 Open House. Many of the attendees come to the Open House with their parents so I thought this is a fun way to get them involved...and embarrass their daughters and/or sons.

Princess Letizia and Prince Felipe of Spain--US SAmbassador to Spain Party, Beverly Hills

Last week, the Crown Prince of Spain, Felipe and Princess Letizia had an official visit to California and besides some formal day events and appearances, they also were feted in style. Of note in particular, they attended a party given by the U.S. Ambassador to Spain, James Costos. When I saw the photos from this event, I almost glossed over it...

Diplomatic Style: (left to right) U.S. Ambassador to Spain James Costin, Proncess Letizia of Spain, Prince Felipe of Spain and Michael Smith

U.S. Ambassador to Spain James Coston and his husband Michael Smith

But, what sparked my interest was when I happened upon the photos and noticed that "Wait! The US Ambassador to Spain AND HIS HUSBAND" threw the party! In case you were "out of the international diplomatic loop", our country's Ambassador is gay and yes, he has a husband. Take that!

James Costos is an HBO executive and prominent figure who played major roles in raising money for President Obama’s reelection. Costos is the vice president of global licensing and retail, consumer marketing for HBO. He and his partner, designer Michael Smith, raised at least $500,000 for Obama’s reelection campaign in the 2012 cycle.

In case you were wondering about the fashion, and in particular Princes Letizia's...the gorgeous and very lithe Spanish Crown Princess wore a silver and black sequined top and black skinny cropped pant from Spanish designhouse Felipe Varela. She looked chic and very Hollywood fab!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards Red Carpet Part One: The Muy Bien!

Sequin Bella: Roselyn Sanchez at the 14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards Press Room--Mandalay Bay Events Center Las Vegas, Nevada

Last night was the 14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada. As usual there was A LOT of color and A LOT of sparkle when it came to the "red carpet"--I put it in quotes because it was actually yes, NOT red. So, let's start my"Who Wore What? Latin Grammys 2013" on a positive note with the "Muy Bien!"group. And don't you worry kids, I'll have an"Ayyy Mija!" blog posting afterwards!

Becky G--Mexican American hip hop singer, rapper, songwriter and dancer from Inglewood California Becky G is only 4' 11" but I have to say, in this bubblegum pink column gown, she looks like a 5' 11" model: she looks Muy Bien! The gown is simply, clean and well fitting--featuring a high boat neck, side front slit (not to high, thank you very much!), clean center parted hair and minimal accessories. Well done.

Carmen Electra--Carmen Electra looked quite fab in this black gown with front keyhole and sequined sleeves. She's very covered up...for her, and I like that. Not sure the black nail color was necessary but I do appreciate the clean makeup and pulled back ponytail hairstyle.

Genesis Rodriguez--Miami Florida-born actress Genesis Rodriguez (she played "Marisol" in Identity Thief) looked modern, sleek and quite chic in this off-white high-necked gown with side cut-out's and side slit. Her hair looked amazing, loved her makeup and the strappy heels were just right! Muy Bien indeed!

Ana Patricia--When I first looked at this photo, I actually thought it was former "Miss Universe 2006"Zuleyka Rivera from Puerto Rico. But, in fact, it was another former beauty queen: "Miss Nuestra Belleza 2010" and entertainment reporter for "Despierta America" Ana Patricia. She looked great in this off-white sequined gown with a v-neck front, slicked back hair, earrings and delicate bangle. I also loved the pop of color with her blue clutch. Good styling!

Leslie Grace--American singer-songwriter Leslie Grace dazzled in this champagne sequin-and-tulle high-neck gown with open back and draped cowl back detail. Everything about it was pretty; her hair, her pearl-drop earrings, simple makeup and yes, the gown. This is a perfect way to do a sequined gown but not look too "Prom-&-Pageant".

Lourdes Stephen--Presenter and moderator of Univision's "Sal y Pimienta"(Salt and Pepper) TV show, Lourdes Stephen also did the sequined gown route. Hers was a creamy yellow color and had gold metallic oversized paillettes sprinkled from heavy to light throughout the tulle-based dress. The silhouette, drop shoulder and gold metallic belt were very good style touches. If I had any complaint, it would be the "1998 Beauty Pageant Hair"; with such a gown, her hair should have looked more modern--down, side or center-parted and more clean and simple.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriel Isler--Newly crowned "Miss Universe 2013" Maria Gabriela Isler from Venezuela looked fabulosa in this blush-colored sequined gown that she wore onstage while presenting an award at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards. Unfortunately, what she wore on the "red carpet"/press room was not that "Muy Bien!" (wait for the next post to see that). But for now, this look is one of the better ones of last night's awards show.

Roselyn Sanchez--This look above on actress Roselyn Sanchez was one of my favorite looks--if not my favorite--of last night's 2013 Latin Grammy Awards Red Carpet. Her strapless silver/gold/gunmetal sequin gown was designed by Rani Zachem Couture. Rani is a Beirut Lebanon-born, Nairobi Kenya-raised fashion designer who got much of his experience interning with Yigal Azrouël, Carlos Miele and Zuhair Murad. I love this gown on Rosalyn because it is just right for her; there is enough razzle-dazzle for this type of an event, the fit is good and the sequin work isn't obvious and in fact, a bit Art Deco and geometric.

Bunny Ears No: Natalie Cole--14th Annual Latin  Grammy Awards, Mandalay Bay Events Center Las Vegas Nevada

In my last post HERE, I discussed the "Muy Bien!" of the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards which occurred on Thursday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. So, now it's time for your favorite: the "Ayyyy Mija!"--or in English, the "What Were You Thinking?" group. And yes, kids, there were plenty...Let's begin with the MEN:

Ricky Martin: First off, Ricky has made a pact with the Beauty Devil; he looks THE SAME he looked ten years ago! His face, his hair...soooo handsome! Very, very good genes and yes, oh so super cute! But this tuxedo ensemble is not. It would have been perfectly fine, if it were not for whatever is hanging from the jacket hem (or did that come from the pants?). I just don't understand it. Someone like him, with his iconic background should just be giving simple, elegant black tie. Period. I love the printed tuxedo, that's fine. He can be "different" that way. But the extra stuff? What is that? So unnecessary. But, let me remind you (on a good note)...

From the chest up: PERFECTION! And, at least, he didn't look like these next two:
Gian Marco: Peruvian singer-songwriter Gian Marco looked all about a mess in this look. Please take a look (but not for long) at this leather jacket that has been "separated" by, what looks like, a zipper. If he was trying to be "cool" and "different", he achieved neither. It was tacky. And then, it is styled with gray pinstripe pants, a dated-looking belt and moss-green shoes!!??? Seriously: what was he thinking? Stick to classic with a little bit of edge. Because this whole look screams that it was styled and made by a Fashion College dropout.

Band of Bitches: I know that this is their thang. But, it doesn't mean I have to like it. They're going to look back at this ten years from now and think "Wow, we were TRIPPIN'!".

Natalie Cole--Oh Natalie, how much do I love you?? Red satin-backed crepe Bunny Ears gown with silver crystal trim and front jeweled detail. She had to know that this look would make people talk...and not in a good way. This gown is so Amateur Design Hour, I am disheartened at the fact that she went there. Why Natalie and her stylist cannot pull--or at least buy--a Stephan Rolland, Elie Saab or Dior for Raf Simmons gown, is beyond me. Because this coral orange/bunny ears dress is not up to her icon standards.Natalie Cole's Stylist: Please email me!! I have a couple...or more of my NIKOLAKI gowns that you would look PERFECT in!

Z Lala--Z Lala is a "World Pop" singer that just loves to look two seconds beyond Cray Cray. And she achieved that here with this look above at Thursday night's 2013 Latin Grammy Awards. The entire ensemble is a Poor Man's Version of Lady Gaga and looks as if she somehow got into a Michaels Arts & Crafts store after hours and had a field day! But, in case you think this look above was tacky-licious...let's not forget what she wore at the Latin Billboard Awards earlier this year:

Z Lala at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards

Albita--Cuban-American singer-producer-composer Albita looked like a crumpled "Mother-of-the-Bride" at the 2013 Latin Grammys in this polyester satin off-the-shoulder gown with some sort of crystal motif of buildings? The dress is too tight, the seams are rippling and the style is so not of this century. It always bothers me when someone with that much talent and money, can have so little style-sense.

Alisha Gaddis: Actress/Producer/Director Alisha Gaddis somehow thought it was 1992 and she might be going to the Prom. She wore this strapless ball gown that was way too overwhelming, too iridescent and not necessarily flattering. On a good note: her makeup was very nice.

Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete--Ximena!!! What. Is. This? Horsehair trimmed gown with back cascades in black satin and ply organza with wine colored sequined top. It's soooo wrongand the taste level is beyond tacky.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler--I liked what Gabriela wore on stage at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards. But what she wore for the Press Room/Red Carpet (this blue sequin and nude illusion gown above) was not cute; it was Figure Skating Costume Gone Bad. The nude illusion isn't even close to being the right color.

Finally...Ayyyyy Mija Lifetime Achievement Award Goes To:
Charo: Te Quiero Charo. This entire look is EVERYTHING!

Lady Gaga in Versace Spring 2014: Lady Gaga never fails to make an entrance, and she didn't disappoint tonight at the AMA's arriving on a white "War Horse" style horse:

She did, however, disappoint me a bit in the Lavender Silk ChiffonVersace Gown that she wore. I would have loved to have seen something a bit more dramatic to go along with the entrance instead of an off-the-runway style. I'm sure Donatella would have made her anything she wanted. After all she did just write a song about her!!

I would have loved to have seen a over the top Versace chain mail gown or take the Guinevere theme even further.

What do you think?!

Katy Perry in Oscar de la Renta Spring 2014: Katy wore this Black Strapless Tulle Ballgown with White Polka Dots and Floral Embroidery.

Perry looks absolutely lovely in this very lady like gown, but always seems to have fun and add a bit of whimsy to everything she wears. She accessorized the look with a Olympia Le-Tan ‘Webster’s New World Dictionary’ box clutch and oversized Flower Ring.

Love the strong Red lips and am happy she didn't wear the veil!!!

Taylor Swift in Julien Macdonald Fall 2013: Taylor wore this Gold Beaded Strapless Micro-Mini Cocktail Dress from Julien Macdonald's latest Fall Collection.

I think this dress was the perfect choice for Taylor. Swift is always one of the best dressed women on the Red Carpet and she rarely makes a misstep (It doesn't hurt that she has a Supermodel Body!). This was no exception and she smartly switched out the heels worn on the Runway for the FANTASTIC Jimmy Choo ‘Madison’ strappy sandals.

I also loved the the Brigette Bardot hair and minimal jewelry. Good Job Taylor!

Heidi Klum in Marchesa Spring 2014: I love Miss Heidi but I have to admit that thisis notmy favorite look on her.

I am sure this Marchesa Spring 2014 dress up close is gorgeous with all that netting, silk lace, tulle and organza appliques and on the runway, it looked quite interesting but...all of that PLUS the fringe was a but too "Argentinian Flapper Dancer" confusing. But more importantly, what did you guys think?

Zendaya Coleman in Donna Karan Resort 2014: Beautiful actress/singer/dancer Zendaya wore this white ensemble featuring an off-the-shoulder asymmetrical top and pants from Donna Karan's Resort 2014 Collection . I loved this look on her; it was modern and easy-breezy chic. I also loved her hair: it looked fabulous!

I might have not have suggested those big silver stacked heels and opted for strappy ones. She's 5' 10" and didn't need those platforms.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....American Music Awards 2013: Naya Rivera in Michael Kors

Naya Rivera in Michael Kors: "Glee" star Naya Rivera wore this black jersey slithering gown with a (very open!) keyhole front, mock-neck, long sleeves and train for days! What do I think? It's very "Sex-a-licious Elvira".

I think that this gown focuses too much on her "Sistahs" and I can't even think about anything else (and not in a good way). And, I love me a good train, but this one seemed unnecessary. On a positive note: her hair and makeup were perfect!

So...Is this Too Sexy or Not Sexy Enough? What do you guys think?

Carolina Kostner Debuts Her New Short Program Costume--Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013 Moscow Russia

This weekend was the Rostelecom Cup (or Cup of Russia) 2013--the final of six international competitions of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating for Season 2013-2014 all leading up to the Grand Prix Final. Rostelecom Cup was held at the Small Sports Arena of Luzhniki in Moscow Russia. I've discussed a lot of the costumes for the previous Grand Prix of this season and you can find those under the "Categories" section on the right side of this blog entitled "Ice Style". So, for now, it's time to discuss the Costumes Recap of the Rostelecom Cup 2013 and the Ladies and Pairs...

Ladies:
Haruka Imai Japan, Short Program: Haruka skated her SP to "Song Without Words" by Felix Mendelssohn. It was an ombre dyed lilac costume with a nude illusion top section and silver/multi-colored jeweled neckline and bust/torso. It was pretty on her and I especially liked the delicate sleeve hem details and hair accessory as well.

Free Skate: For her FS to Piano Concerto by Saint-Preux, I thought this was an impressive costume. It had a teal and light blue multi-layered handkerchief-hemmed skirt, nude illusion top and one-shoulder sequined applique. Loved the colors and I really liked the jeweled/sequin detail. Two for two, as they say, for Haruka Imai and her 2013/2014 Season costumes.

Kanako Murakami Japan Short Program: Kanako wore this black and white costume for her SP to "Catgroove,""Libella Swing" and "Swing Bop". The costume looked a bit too "Jr. Skater" for me. The diamante vertical detail on the torso seemed cheap and the style uncreative. But, she is on trend with the gloves; LOTS of the Ladies Figure Skaters are donning gloves this season.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva Russia, Short Program: Speaking of gloves...Russian Ladies Figure Skater Elizaveta Tuktamysheva skated her SP to a Latin Medley wearing this glove-accessorized look: it was a one-shoulder black costume with silver sparkle crystals and nude illusion neck and sleeve section. Once again, I felt this could have been more; it just did not scream "Olympic Costume" but more (yet again!), "Jr. Figure Skater". And, need I add, the messy hair didn't help. It looked as if she just got up and pulled a pony-tail as she was getting ready to head to her nearest Starbucks! Try again darling.

Julia Lipnitskaia Russia, Short Program Costume Change: Little Julia Lipnitskaia skated her SP to "You Don't Give Up on Love" by Mark Minkov at Rostelecom Cup 2013 and she wore a different costume than what she had worn previously at Skate Canada 2013...and I loved it! This was a great costume change! This costume--which was a navy and light blue costume with midnight blue stretch illusion and sequins--was so much more refined and elegant than her "young and cute" look here:

The costume she wore at her last Grand Prix appearance at Skate Canada 2013

Mirai Nagasu USA, Short Program Costume Change--Another skater who had a costume change was USA's Mirai Nagasu. On the left is what she wore to this past weekend's Rostelcom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013 and on the right, is what she last wore at NHK Trophy 2013 during her SP to "The Man I Love" by George Gershwin. There were subtle changes but, generally, it was a nice improvement. I still feel her costume needs to have a little more interesting style; sorry to be so blunt but both look slightly "store bought".

Carolina Kostner Italy, Free Skate Costume Change: There was a rumour (someone on my Twitter told me) that Italian Ladies Figure Skater Carolina Kostner's Free Skate costume that she wore at Cup of China 2013 to "Scheherazade" by Nikoli Rimsky-Korsakov (seen above on the right) wasn't her "real" one. Cut to this past weekend's Rostelecom Cup 2013 and she "debuted" a new look (left photo).  I like this new one much better; it didn't look like a "Russian Folk Song" costume (the one on the right did) and reflected much more the music and theme.I appreciated the intricacy of the beadwork in the upper torso and how it stood out against a skin-colored illusion background. With that being said....IT WAS A LOT OF LOOK! It all could be toned down just a bit and I am definitely not so sure about the beaded crotch section!!!

Carolina Kostner, Short Program Costume Addition:
Carolina Kostner also added two beaded straps to the back of her Short Program costume (seen above) which she didn't have at her last Grand Prix appearance here:

Without the straps: Carolina Kostner at Cup of China 2013

Pairs:
Julia Antipova and Nodari Maisuradze Russia, Short Program: Russian Figure Skating Pair Antipova and Maisuradze skated their Short Program to "Beethoven's 5 Secrets" by The Piano Guys in these costumes above. I liked these costumes for several reasons: the contrast between the male and the female, in colors. Also, I appreciated that the male's costume details almost mirrored hers, but with additional details. Many times, in Pairs, you're dealing with the guy in a black basic costume and the female in a super-sequined, colored look that has NOTHING to do with his black top and pants. So, I am happy that, at least, these two look as if they belong together!

Free Skate: For their FS to "Money" and "The Great Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd, I loved that they went "Period Rocker". She looked delicate, feminine and pretty in her pink cowl neck costume but "toughened" it up with a black diamante studded "harness" vest. And Nodari looked like a 80's Euro Rock Star (in a FAB way!) in his black Lycra with silver studs and sequined look.

Lindsay Davis and Rockne Brubaker USA, Short Program: These costumes above are what US Pairs skaters Davis and Brubaker wore for their SP to "Le Petite Fleur" and "Skokia" by Louis Armstrong. Frankly, I was bored. Lindsay looked like a saloon waitress in the old Wild West. And Rockne, well...it's a black dress shirt, black pants with a "pop" of deep lavender. Not so much to discuss. On a positive note: at least they matched--color-wise. Other than this, these were not creative.

Kristen Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch Canada, Short Program: When I saw this Pairs team's costumes, I thought "Oh, these look familiar!". And I was right. The Canadian Pairs team of Moore-Towers and Moscovitch repeated their Season 2012-2013 Short Program to "A Motley Crew" from the Mic Macs soundtrack by Raphael Beau and Max Steiner for this season. They also did a repeat for their costumes. Here is what I said then about these costumes.

Narumi Takahashi and Ryuichi Kihara Japan, Short Program: Takahashi and Kihara skated their SP to Music from Samson and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saens in these costumes above and I really liked them. I loved the red and black contrast and the fact that they didn't go the predictable Near East costume route. I also loved the "car wash"-like skirt which really looked great as Narumi was tossed and did her jumps/turns.

Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov Russia, Free Skate: Stolbova and Klimov wore these bright, graphic costumes for their FS toMusic from The Addams Family soundtrack by Marc Shaiman. While I appreciated the bold choices, I thought this was a confusing Pairs Costume look. Fedor looked very Gomez Adams "kooky" in his costume yet Ksenia looked as if she was skating to "Carmen". Her costume was so sleek and simple, as compared to his. For once, the MAN stood out more than the female and yet, it didn't work. And to add: there is NOTHING of Morticia Adams in her look.

Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov Russia, Free Skate: For their FS costumes at the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013 skating to "Polovetsian Dances" from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, which I have discussed previously HERE --which I liked!), Vera added something that wasn't present at their previous appearance: the headband with red accent. Here's how she looked without it at 2013 Trophée Eric Bompard:

Do you guys like her better with--or without? Let me know--I'm thinking without.

Oh My! Costumed Boys...Misha Ge of Uzbekistan (left) and Taksuki Machida of Japan and their very colorful costumes at the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013

FIGURE SKATING Costume Fans: As you know, this past weekend was the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013--the last Grand Prix competition before the Grand Prix Finals of this 2013-2014 Season. I talked about the LADIES and PAIRS of the Rostelecom Cup HERE in my last post. And now, it's time for the MEN and ICE DANCE. Let's get started:
The Men:
Konstantin Menshov Russia, Short Program: Skating his SP to "Coultergeist" by Phil Coulter, Konstantin wore this above: a white loose top with images of Michelangelo's' Sistine Chapel hands, black pants and white gloves. The song is from Phil Coulter's "Highland Cathedral" album and so I surmise that there's religious imagery in the theme. Even then, I kind of don't get it. It's a cool long sleeve t-shirt but other than that, I'm a bit costume-confused.

Tatsuki Machida Japan, Short Program: Japanese male skaterskated his SP toEast of Eden (TV Miniseries Soundtrack) by Lee Holdridge in this white and black costume. I liked the costume but still have no idea what this has to do with "East of Eden" and the TV Miniseries; the costume looks more like something one would wear to Beethoven or Mozart music.

Free Skate Costume Change: For his FS to Music from The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky, Japanese Figure Skater Taksuki Machida wore this above. It was a black long sleeved jumpsuit that had fire-like references in black, red and yellow upon a not-matching skin-colored illusion background. I didn't like it. This is what he wore in his previous ISU Grand Prix appearance which I REALLY LOVED:

At Hilton HHonors Skate America 2013 and the costume he wore last season (to the same music)--One of the BEST! Note to Taksuki: Please go back to this!

Misha Ge Uzbekistan, Short Program:For his SP to I Still Got Blues, Still Got Rock by Gary Moore, Misha Ge wore this colorful costume. It is VERY "Blades of Glory" and I have to admit, I kinda like it! Yes, it's rather tacky but boy, did it make me sit up and come alive with joy when I saw it. He definitely should get a "Oh No He Didn't" trophy for his very "Hollywood Costume Designer"-designs-a-costume-for-an-actor-playing-a-Figure Skater.

Free Skate: For his FS to World Dance Collection including Neo Tango; Rhumba; Electro; Jive; Rock'n'Roll, Misha did not disappoint. This was a red, black, white, laced-up costume of CRAY-CRAY. I love that Misha--and whoever is designing his costumes, are still stuck in the 1990's era of figure skating. This makes me smile. Yes, it is so tacky and so not chic but it's kind of nice of have some retro...even tacky-licious retro.

Ice Dance:
Ksenia Monko and Kirill Khavalian Russia, Short Dance: For their SD to Quickstep by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, "L-O-V-E-" by Nat King Cole, Russian Ice Dance team Monko and Khavalian wore these costumes above. I thought her costume was so intricate, so well done. Loved the color and Art Deco-like sequin work. And he looked like a very fab waiter with his double-breasted shawl collared jacket and pants look. I just wished he had some royal blue in his costume--to tie her costume to his.

Free Dance: For their FD to Selection by Rene Aubry and selection by Gaetano Donizetti, this Russian Ice Dance pair gave "Venice Gondola"in their costumes. Overall, I liked these costumes, I just wish his pants were more fitted; there's too much thigh-leg excess. Make them stretch woven and thin out the leg. Please! At least, it's an improvement from her wearing "Olivia Newton-John/Let's Get Physical" leg warmers in their last appearance at 2013 Trophée Eric Bompard:

Leg Warmers at At 2013 Trophée Eric Bompard

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev Russia, Free Dance: For their FD to Music from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi and "Lacrimosa" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013, the Russian Ice Dance team of Bobrova and Soloviev changed their costumes! And...I wasn't a fan. These new costumes featured ombre-dyed white-to-blue-to-dark gray...BORING and un-Olympic level material...

Bird Fab: I would LOVE for them to go back to these costume above that they wore for their last Grand Prix appearance Short Program

Señorita Colombia 2013 Paulina Vega Dieppa--"Miss Atlantico" will now represent "Miss Colombia" at next year's "Miss Universe 2014" beauty pageant

Señorita Colombia 2013 Paulina Vega Dieppa

Crowning: Paulina Vega Dieppa "Miss Atalntico" (right) being crowned by "Miss Universe Colombia 2012" Carmen Lucia Aldana Roldán (left)

This month was a big pageant month being that the "Miss Universe 2013" pageant occurred earlier on November 9th. In all the excitement of the pageant and spending a lot of time writing fun blog postings about it; including the winner and the gowns...another beauty pageant that occurred just days afterward, escaped me: the "Señorita Colombia"/"Miss Universe Colombia 2013-2014". A couple of weeks ago, the 79th(!) edition of this national beauty contest happened, in the Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias on November 11th. The winner was Paulina Vega Dieppa. Paulina represented the coastal state of Atlantico.

Miss Atlantico (and new "Miss Universe Colombia 2013-2014) Paulina Vega Dieppa

A native of Barranquilla--a Caribbean port city less than an hour’s drive from Cartagena--Vega won with 9.9 scoring performances on both the gown and swimsuit competitions. The new "Miss Universe Colombia" is 20 years old, and stands 1, 77 m (about 5' 10"). She will represent her country at next year's "Miss Universe 2014".

Top Two: "Miss Atlantico" reacts as her name is being announced as the new "Miss Universe Colombia 2013-2014"--First Runner-up was Zuleika Kiara Suárez Torrenegra, who represented San Andres and Providencia. The 1, 80 m (5' 11") beauty will represent Colombia in "Miss International 2014".

The Gowns:
Top Five: (left to right) "Miss San Andres and Providencia" Zuleika Kiara Suárez Torrenegra, "Miss Valle" Tania Valencia Cuero,"Miss Antioquia" Carolina Crovo Sierra "Miss Risaralda" María Alejandra López Pérez, "Miss Atlantico" Paulina Vega Dieppa

WINNER: "Miss Atlantico" Paulina Vega Dieppa--the eventual winner got the highest gown competition score of 9.9 wearing this Alfredo Barraza-designed gown. The gown was a nude-backed column dress featuring jeweled sequins in a diagonal pattern, a plunging neckline and shoulder "hanging" arm accent. It was THE PERFECT GOWN! It fit Paulina beautifully, showed off her figure and the styling--including side-swept hair and only earrings as accessories were on-point. I would have also give her a 9.9.

FIRST RUNNER-UP: "Miss San Andres and Providencia" Zuleika Kiara Suárez Torrenegra-- Zuleika worea golden fitted sheer gown featuring gold and silver sequin applique. The look was finished off with a very "Cleopatra"-like neckpiece. It was a dramatic look but I admit there were too many things going on in this total gown look and it wasn't one of my favorites; mainly that neckpiece had NOTHING to do with the gown--at least in my eyes. The judges scored her in 3rd place in terms of Evening Gown Scores..so, shows you what I know! I also was not a fan of  her hairstyle: I feel it could have been a little more "Diva"-like--maybe a high bun like...

 "Miss Universe 2011" Leila Lopes

Other Gowns:
Miss Arauca Paola Ruiz Quiroga--Paola wore a baby blue iridescent gown with sequined torso section. She looked quite pretty but the gown was nothing spectacular; we've seen this before, many, many times. It was nothing "Beauty Pageant Gown" earth-shaking but...it was nice and safe. Her gown was designed by Diego Fernando Marin.

Miss Bogota Jennifer Uscategui--Oh Jennifer!! What were you thinking?? This gown--designed by Rafael Paez--is is a HOT MESS! This emerald green organza and sequined gown with gathered hip detail was straight out of a beauty pageant from 1995. And the dated hairstyle did not help. Oh, and then there were those shoes! Definitely an "Ayyy Mija!".

Miss Bolivar Geraldine Alvarez Hernandez--Wow!! Big Bird called and it wants it's big ol' taffeta gown...from 1987! This dress is just SOOOO MUCHEEEY that well, I was not surprised when I saw that she got one of the lowest gown scores of the night, an 8.4 (which by the way, I think was very generous).

Miss Quindio Daniella Jhoana Calderón Novoa--Miss Quindio was one of the semi-finalists of the pageant and she scored a 9.2 from the judges with this gown. The gown was a skin-and-golden colored tulle/netting backed dress with gold sequin applique. The dress was designed by Alfredo Barraza and compared to some of the others, this was a good gown. Personally, I would have wished that her legs weren't exposed and were covered with the elaborate golden applique. This would have made the gown a little more "tasteful". And on a styling note, she did not need those big ol' earrings.

Miss Tolima Sandra Paola Arias Muñoz--Miss Tolima received the lowest gown score of the night with this pink strapless dress. And I can see why: I have seen this dress hanging on a plastic mannequin in Downtown LA "Fashion District". Been There/Done That. And that hair and those earrings...are we in 1992? Ayyyy Mija!!!

Miss Choco Yesuli Londoño Mosquera--One word: GURL!!!! I have to give "Miss Choco" points for being so daring as to wear this ivory fringed and sequined Alfredo Barraza-designed gown that looked as if it was attacked by a trim store. On the other hand...she looked as if she was attacked by a trim store!

Felicitaciones to the new Señorita Colombia/Miss Universe Colombia 2013-2014! And thank goodness she wore a fabulous gown!

Well, it's almost the end of the year and we just finished with two "biggies" in terms of beauty pageants--Miss World and Miss Universe...but we're not done yet: the 13th edition of theMiss Earth Pageantis taking place in the Philippines with the Final Telecast occurring on December 7th at the Versailles Palace in Alabang, Muntinlupa City (an outer suburb of the capital, Manila), Philippines. Miss Earth is an annual international pageant promoting environmental awareness. Along with Miss Universe and Miss World, it's one of three largest international beauty pageants--in terms of entrants. This year's edition is aligned with "The International Year of Water Cooperation".

The Top Three Evening Gown Medalists: (left to right) Miss Philippines Angelee delos Reyes (3rd Place, Bronze), Miss Venezuela Alyz Henrich (1st Place, Gold), and Miss Nepal Rojisha Shahi Thakuri (2nd Place, Silver)

Crimson Hotel Ballroom--site of the Miss Earth 2013 Evening Gown Final Competition

This year's contest features 89 contestants from all over the world. They have been in the Philippines for the last couple of weeks competing in "Challenge Events" including Talent, National Costume and  Swimsuit to name a few. Naturally, the Challenge Event I'm most interested in is the Evening Gown Final Competition. This was held last night at the Grand Ballroom of the Crimson Hotel in Alabang. All the contestants modeled in front of a selected panel of judges and competed for the Gold, Silver and Bronze...in Evening Gown. So, let's not waste any more time and get to the Evening Gown Review. First up in this post are the Good Ones. And yes, following this post I will be talk about the "Oh Dear's!" and there were plenty unfortunately...

First, The Best:
The Gold Medal Evening Gown Winner: Miss Venezuela Alyz Henrich--Alyz won last night for her silver strapless gown featuring a heavily pailletted design with gold/silver waist-defining belt. It was a nice gown and I can see why it received top honors. The big ol' earrings are a big much, especially with what's already going on with the gown, but yes, she's from Venezuela, those girls can't resist big ol' earrings!

Silver Medal, Evening Gown: Miss Nepal Rojisha Shahi Thakuri--Rijisha received the 2nd place  from judges with this baby blue mermaid shaped gown featuring silver and gold embroidered/lace crystals, long sleeves and plunging v-neckline. From head to toe, it was impacting but rather "Pageant Betty" for my taste; it looked a little dated (1990s). But in terms of a "total look", it was a nice presentation.

Bronze Medal, Evening Gown; Miss Philippines Angelee delos Reyes--Angelee got third place with this ivory gown that had a plain flared floor-length skirt attached to a lace-and-sequined mock-neck top with long sleeves. The top had a lot going on (were those silver mirrored sequins really necessary at the neckband?) and I am always cautious (and uncomfortable) of dresses that encircle the woman's breast area--such as this. But oh well, what do I know, those judges thought this was third best!

Here are ACTUALLY some of MY Favorites:
Miss Kosovo Donika Emini--I loved Donika's gown. It was classic, elegant and styled correctly--from her hair, delicate earrings and makeup. The gown featured a sheer netting neck and 3/4 sleeve section highlighted by silver sequined accents and a full gathered skirt with slit and ruched bodice. One of my faves.

Miss Mexico Kristal Silva--Wow! Kristal wore a one-shoulder gown with multicolored paillettes in a very "Water Theme" color combination of teal, algae green, lilac, purple, turquoise and baby blues. Her hair, makeup and accessories were DIVINE. Exquisite Miss Earth Mexico!

Miss Trinidad and Tobago Ariana Rampersad--Ariana's gown was very similar to Miss Mexico's in its multicolored paillette fabrication. But in terms of silhouette, hers was a halter neckline and did not have side cut out's. I liked it--it was impacting, had the right amount of stage presence "sparkle" and fit her beautifully.

Miss Belize Amber Rivero--Amber may be only 5' 5" tall but she looks very statuesque in this elegant and very red carpet perfect gown. The strapless gown, features a light blue color, metallic lace applique and sequined-and-shirred bodice. Her hair, makeup and jewels are just right. Good job Amber--and your "Miss Earth Belize" Glam Team (if there is one!).

Miss Zambia Winnie Fredah-Kabwe--Winnie looks gorgeous in this strapless white sequined gown with silver jeweled bustline edge. It is simple yet still packs a "Gown punch". I love that it is the perfect length and I don't see any tacky platform "Stripper" heels...and her hair and accessories are almost non-existent (good styling choice Winnie!).

Miss Brazil Priscilla Martins--Priscilla wore a halter style gold sequined "mermaid lite" style gown. it was not "Earth-shaking" in terms of design but it fit nicely and she looked "Pageant Right". I am frightened by the shoes she wore with this, however--they are poking out very little and I just hope they stay hidden!
Miss Gabon Filiane Mayombo Koundi--Kudos to Filiane who looked beautiful in this ivory v-neck sleeveless metallic lace gown. The length is perfect, the color is just right and her hair and earrings worked. Congrats darling on this!

Miss Romania Ioana Mihalache--Ioana wore this gold lame gown that was simple yet impacting. the fit was perfect and so was the length. Her straight modern hair also mirrored the clean simple lines of this gown. This look would definitely be a Red Carpet "Yes!".
Miss Poland Aleksandra Szczęsna--Aleksandra also wore a very simple clean gown and I was a fan. Her choice as a light golden colored boat-neck sheath gown with fit-and-flared silhouette. Her hair was modern and chic...like the gown.

Miss Switzerland Djoa Strassbourg--Djoa brightened up the Evening Gown Final Competition in this strapless magenta pink gown with silver sequined bust and multi-layered below-the-knee detail. The whole head-to-toe look is A LOT and rather "Pageant Betty" but maybe I've been seeing one too many pageant gowns because I kinda like it!

Miss Russia Olesya Bosloviak--Olesya's red-over-nude gown was unusual and leaned more toward the "couture"-like quality. I appreciated all the sequin and applique work as well as the directional shoulder detail. Very editorial and runway.

Miss China PR Lisa Xiang--Lisa's gown would not be one of my favorites on any other day but here, it's a standout for being "unusual" and in a good, creative--and cultural way. I even like the styling and that headband. Yes, she's two minutes from looking a bit "Cray-Cray" and National Costume-y but...I likey!

GURL!!!! Evening Gown NOT--Miss Sierra Leone Mariatu Dukuray and Miss Chinese Taipei Lyu Ying Li wore some Evening Gown "Uh Oh's!"--Miss Earth 2013 Evening Gown Final Competition
All Photos Courtesy of Miss Earth Pageant Facebook

As you read in my last post, the 2013 Miss Earth beauty pageant is happening and last night was the Evening Gown Final Competition--one of the important preliminary contests in the calendar for the finals coming up on December 7th...
Looks Like Someone Already Has a Crown--Miss Chile, Miss Chinese Taipei and Miss Colombia compete in the 2013 Miss Earth Evening Gown Final Competition

I've already discussed the Best Gowns HERE so now, it's time to talk about the "Uh Oh!"/What Were You Thinking" group...
Miss Colombia Diana Ortegon--Oh No!! What Downtown L.A. dress shop did Diana get this from? I think she is so beautiful, why did she go there with this Cray-Cray gown? There's just too mucheey and too tacky-licious. Scheherazade Reno Vegas Casino Review Called...and they want their costume back.

Miss Germany Caroline Noeding--On the opposite end of Too Mucheey is this: Miss Germany. Caroline looks like a very pristine and precious Paris Hilton; before the fame and craziness. She could have done much better but somehow, she went the 1986 Prom Dress route. This, simply, is a NO.

Miss Israel Maria Abboud--Maria's evening gown choice was perplexing to me; it looks more like a negligee--or a maxi dress to be worn at a Cabo vaca dinner at "Señor Frog's"with strappy sandals.  I just don't get it.

Miss South Africa Gloria Karsis--Gloria wore a pink strapless gown with a high side opening/slit, uneven tulle gathering at the torso and shredded organza and feathers (I think) at the skirt. It's messy, a bit cheap-looking, and too much like something that should be at the top of a cheesy wedding cake.

Miss Bahamas Vandia Sands--This gown choice would have been fine if...it didn't have all the exposed cut-outs and the slit and the straps galore...and if she would not have worn it with those Lucite gold "Stripper" platform heels. I love the multicolored sequin work, but that's about it.

Miss Wales Angharad James--Angharad (love her name!) wore a white gown with nude illusion torso section with silver "Christmas-like" icicle accents. let me repeat: Christmas Icicles. Uh Oh!

Miss Ecuador Ana Maria Weir--Ana Maria wore a coral colored hi-lo strapless gown that was all things (slightly) cheap and (slightly) tacky. The "hi" part was too high, the fabric looks like polyester and she styles it with those silver "Stripper" platform heels. Two words: No Mija!

Miss Sierra Leone Mariatu Dukuray--Oh Mariatu, I really want to like you...however, this gown choice is one of the most tasteless things I have ever seen. The style, the cheap red lace, the white lace, the exposed body...the crystal-encrusted platform heels. Imagine an actress at the Academy awards wearing this. Yep, that's right, it would not be a good day. On a good note: that hair is so "Princess Amidala Star Wars" Fab!

Miss Chinese Taipei Lyu Ying Li--God Bless Lyu Ying Li for A) Wearing a tiara crown even though she hasn't been crowned the winner of anything yet; B) Wearing a teal strapless Prom Dress from 1989; C) Featuring black platform heels that do not go with this dress; and D) Smiling thought it all.

Miss Indonesia Nita Sofiani--Nita gets the prize for most "unique" evening gown--her look featured a sequined-and-chiffon overdress with one long sleeve, sculptured shoulder and high neck. Oh and yes, then there were stretch sequined leggings. With CAMELTOE. And finally, those too-high golden platform shoes. Where do I begin? On a good note, she's so pretty. And on a similar note: why did she need to wear this mess?

Glove Happy: Russian figure skater Elena Radionova Hilton HHonors Skate America 2013 and Peter Liebers of Germany at Cup of China 2013

This past season of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2013-2014 was an exciting one, especially in regards to the costumes. If you've been keeping up with my blog here, you know I LOVE Figure Skating and yes, more importantly, discussing the Figure Skating Costumes. I've talked about all the Grand Prix--Hilton HHonors Skate America, Skate Canada, NHK Trophy, Lexus Cup of ChinaTrophée Eric Bompard and the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia and the Finals are coming up this week/weekend in Fukuaka Japan.

In advance of the Grand Prix Finals, I wanted to discuss a certain costume trend I noticed this season: It was all about gloves as THE accessory DE RIGUEUR for Figure Skating Costumes, more so than ever it seemed. Whether it was just to keep your hands warm or as some skaters have mentioned, to keep them from cutting their hands on their blades, gloves were "featured" as part of the costumes in all the disciplines but primarily in the Ladies, Men, and Ice Dance. So, with that in mind, I wanted to do a Trend Alert for GLOVES in the Grand Prix 2013-2014. I am sure that I missed some skaters that also wore gloves (besides the ones below) but I could only fit so many in one posting so my apologies if I didn't include any that you--the faithful NICKVERREOS.COM reader--might have also remembered...

Let's begin with The Ladies:
Viktoria Helgesson of Sweden, Short Program: Viktoria skated her Short Program Mystery Waltz by D. Shostakovich--seen in photo above at the Hilton HHonors Skate America 2013--wearing this pink and black applique costume and black gloves with a bit of bling bling added for fun.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia, Short Program: Elizabeta skated her Short Program to a Latin Medley this season in this "one-shoulder" black and silver crystal costume (seen in photo above from the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013) with...black gloves. To me, this "glove addition", didn't work so well. It cuts the line of her arms and makes her look a bit cartoony.

Kanako Murakami of Japan, Short Program: In the photo above--from her Short Program skate at theRostelecom Cup 2013 to"Catgroove,""Libella Swing" and "Swing Bop", she worethis black and white costume with diamante crystals as well as black and crystal-encrusted gloves. These work a bit better than Tuktamysheva because they seem to go better with the "theme" of the costume.

Anna Pogorilaya of Russia, Free Skate: For her Free Skate to "Mermaids" from the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (in the photo above from the Lexus Cup of China 2013), she wore this sea-inspired blue costume which featured one glove. I actually like this!

Anna Pogorilaya of Russia, Short Program: Anna skated her Short Program to "El Choclo" (Kiss of Fire) performed by Ikuko Kawai in this neon coral colored costumes with matching long gloves. Wow! That is a LOT of glove! I do appreciate how it gives her a complete look.

Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada, Short Program: Kaetlyn wore long white ones for her Short Program to "Big Spender" and "Rich Man's Frug"as seen above at Skate Canada 2013. In contrast to Pogorilaya, this takes away from her look and is distracting. I feel the costume is too basic for such formal gloves.

Julia Lipnitskaia of Russia, Free Skate: For her Free Skate to Schindler's List by John Williams, Julia, wore this red costume "hinting" at the famous red coat in the film. And yes, she also donned black gloves.

Julia Lipnitskaia of Russia, Short Program: For Julia's Short Program to"You Don't Give Up on Love" by Mark Minkov this season, at Skate Canada 2013, Julia wore this blue costume above with matching gloves. This look didn't last long, however, since she changed her costume for the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013 later. And there were no gloves in that costume look, which I think works much better.

Alena Leonova of Russia, Short Program: Alena skated her Short Program toMusic from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt in this costume above (at NHK Trophy 2013), which she had worn in a previous season to the same music. And naturally, you can't "give" a Pirates of the Caribbean look without gloves, so the gloves are there! Funny how these gloves are a mix of dish-cleaning gloves and ones that would come with a "Pirates" costumes from a Hollywood Costume Shop!

Natalia Popova of Ukraine, Short Program: Natalia skated her Short Program to"Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin Rodrigo performed by Edvin Marton (seen at Skate Canada 2013 in photo above)in this black and silver crystals with nude illusion costume above. The look also featured sheer black gloves. I like the costume and the gloves. Very Chic!

Elena Radionova of Russia, Free Skate: Elena skated to Music from the Frida soundtrack in this red, white costume above that had long red gloves. She wore this at Hilton HHonors Skate Amercia 2013 but at the NHK Trophy 2013 we see that she was able to make them fingerless for the medal presentation:

The Men:
Misha Ge of Uzbekistan, Short Program: Misha skated his Short Program at the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013 to I Still Got Blues, Still Got Rock by Gary Moore in this "Blades of Glory"-looking costume above that featured finger-less, and studded, black gloves.

Misha Ge of Uzbekistan, Free Skate: For his Free Skate toWorld Dance Collection including Neo Tango; Rhumba; Electro; Jive; Rock'n'Roll (seen in the photo above from the Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2013), Misha wore another eye-catching costume that included black gloves. The looks are both Cray-Cray, but the gloves certainly add to the entire ensemble.

Konstantin Menshov of Russia, Short Program: Skating his Short Program to "Coultergeist" by Phil Coulter, Konstantin wore this Michelangelo-inspired printed top and black pants costume with white/sheer gloves. Just a note: the gloves are a bit "clinical" looking.

Sergei Voronov of Russia, Short Program: Voronov skated his Short Program to "Two Guitars"--at NHK Trophy 2013 above--in this white and black costume, with black gloves. These gloves actually work quite well and are quite stylish.

Max Aaron of the USA, Free Skate: Max skated his Free Skate to Music from Carmen performed by Rodion Shchedrin and the Boston Pops Orchestra (photo above from Hilton HHonors Skate America 2013) in this plunging neckline black costume with...black gloves. These make him look a bit like a Cat Burglar to me.

Florent Amodio of France, Short Program: Florent skated his Season 2013-2014 Short Program to "La Cumparsita," arranged by Sebastien Damiani and Faf Larage in the black costume above (from Lexus Cup of China 2013). He also donned black gloves.

Peter Liebers of Germany, Short Program: For his Short program to "Clocks" by Coldpay, performed by 2Cellos featuring Lang Lang, Peter wore this costume above (from his skate at the Lexus Cup of China 2013) with gloves (one of which was color-blocked to blend harmoniously with the rest of the costume).

Maxim Kovtun of Russia, Short Program: Maxim Kovtun wore this costume for his Short Program to Flamenco by Pepe Romero (photo from the Lexus Cup of China 2013) that featured fingerless sleeve-gloves that went with the rest of the España-inspiredcostume. I like this unique take on the glove/sleeve.

Ice Dance:

Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the USA, Short Dance: US dance team of Chock and Bates skated their Short Dance this season to "Hollywood" by Puppini Sisters, "There's No Business Like Show Business" by Irving Berlin (photo above from the Lexus Cup of China 2013). The beautiful Madison wore long white gloves with her shimmering and fringed costume. Fantastic!

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov of Russia: Elena and Nikita skated their Free Dance to Music from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. For their skate at NHK Trophy Japan she wore the black gloves but those were gone, however, at their next skate--at Trophée Eric Bompard 2013. I'm still undecided whether I like the costume with or without gloves? What do you think...

Ksenia Monko and Kirill Khavalian of Russia, Short Dance: For their Short Dance this season to Quickstep by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, "L-O-V-E-" by Nat King Cole, Monko and Khavalian skated to these costumes above. Ksenia wore royal blue gloves that perfectly color-matched her costume.

Happy Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2013-2014 and...If you can find other Costumes from this Season's Grand Prix of Figure Skating where GLOVES were featured, let me know here!
