Costume Beauties: Miss Universe 2014 contestants (Clockwise from top, Australia, Colombia, Bahamas, Great Britain) and their proposed National Costumes for the 63rd edition of Miss Universe

The 63rd edition of the Miss Universe beauty pageant has just begun! If you are a "Pageant Fan" or Missosologist--you might know that the Miss Universe 2014 pageant finals did NOT happen in 2014 but is in fact occurring in two weeks on January 25th in the city of Doral Florida--a suburb of Miami.

These finals will be telecast LIVE on NBC, of course. The first batch of contestants--88 total are competing--have arrived and keeping busy with pre-pageant finals activities, photo sessions and fittings, among other things.

The winner will of course replace Miss Universe 2013 Maria Gabriela Isler from Venezuela (above) who will have the "Fun Fact" of being the first Miss Universe to have reigned over a period of THREE years. She was crowned in 2013, reigned through 2014 and will give up her crown this year in 2015.

As a lead up to all things "Miss Universe" here on my blog--its time to showcase a "Preview" of the fabulous--and fan favorite--National Costumes--the delegates might be wearing for the pageant. I stress "might" since these photos have been garnered via the web/Facebook pages, etc. and one never knows if the contestants will change their costume or these might just be small 'bites" of the actual final version. We will all find out what they actually packed with them on January 21st during the Preliminary Competition and Costume Show.

So, since there are so many, I have divided this blog in two parts--here's the first batch of (probable) Miss Universe 2014 contestants' National Costumes...beginning with Albania:
Albania Zhaneta Byberi: From this social media pic, it would look as if Miss Universe Albania's national costume would stick to a more "traditional" design. I love the colors, the lace trim and jeweled accents.

Australia Tegan Martin: Miss Australia Tegan Martin will wear an ensemble inspired by a Dreamtime sunset for the national costume portion of the Miss Universe international final.
The costume, created by emerging Victorian designer Caitlin Holstock, beat out three other designs. The winning look, which was decided on by the public, comprises of an ocre color bodice and skirt embellished with clay beading and native drawings.
Bahamas Tomii Culmer: Miss Universe Bahamas' costume is influenced by the sea and particular the pearls and seashell. Notice the blue tulle representing the water. It seems pretty fitting for a beauty queen from the beautiful Caribbean island nation of The Bahamas.

Bolivia Claudia Tavel: Claudia's costumes seems to be a silver and ivory sequined eagle, consisting of a fitted (smooshed breast) top, mini (are those her panties!!??), thigh high boots and yes, the feathered back piece. It's very "Victoria's Secret", the Hoochie version.

British Virgin Islands Jaynene Jno Lewis: Very British Virgin Islands traditional. I love the print of the full skirt ad how it's brought back to the headdress/turban.

China Yanliang Hu: Yanliang posted this post on her official Facebook page and so there was speculation that maybe this was her National Costume. But, knowing what last year's Miss Universe China wore, she might actually wear something much more Couture Fab!

Colombia Paulina Vega: Love the colors, the festive-ness of it, the heavy red necklaces, that parasol! It makes me smile.

Croatia Ivana Misura: Ivana's national costume seems to be on the more traditional side incorporating elements of a typical Croatian folk costume and the strong red color which is prevalent in those said designs.

Czech Republic Gabriela Frankova: a tan-colored with gold details, strapless ensemble incorporating a fitted bustier, full-circle skirt and golden feathered headdress is what Gabriela might be wearing as her National Costume. I sure hope that there's a Czech reader here who will educating me on what this all means.

Dominican Republic Kimberly Castillo: Kimberly is featuring a lot of religious symbolism with her supposed National Costume as Miss Universe Dominican Republic 2014. I like how the Virgin has been incorporated into the strapless gown (not sure how the Virgin would like that but...) and the cascade overskirt is an interesting design touch (not sure if "interesting" means good).

Ecuador Alejandra Argudo: Alejandra seems to be going the Pre-Columbian route in terms of her National Costume. I like it. I just hope she loses those nude suede heels; they DEFINITELY do not go with the costume! As a side note: this costume is very "Miss Tahiti" for some reason. Maybe she's vibing more "Easter Island" as opposed to Guayaquil!

El Salvador Patricia Murillo: Wow! Me Gusta. Speaking of Pre-Columbian. Miss El Salvador is giving you "Pre-Columbian Empress" HUUUNEY! I love everything...except the strappy platforms. The heels take it from "National Costume" to "I'm at a Las Vegas nightclub!".

France Camille Cerf: Beret: Check! Eiffel Tower lace applique: Check! As cheesy as this gown might be, it's actually quite good! It somehow meshes Fashion, Couture and yes, a little bit (OK, a LOT!) of France.

Great Britain Grace Levy: Sexy Foot Guards Uniform. Enough said. Yes, she's representing Great Britain.

Guatemala Ana Montufar Urrutia: Ana wore this costume above when she competed in the Miss Universe Guatemala 2014 pageant, so it might be a good prediction that she will wear this as her National Costume. I think she should; it's all things FABULOSO!!!

Guyana Niketa Barker: I LOVE this costume. I have NO IDEA what it means, but I still love it. The golden sequin "scales" remind me of a lizard and that headdress is waaay too fabulous for words. And then, she's holding a golden oversized ball??? If you are from Guyana and can ESSSPLAIN any of this, I'd love to read your comments below!

Haiti Christie Desir: These pics above are from Christie's social media so yes, excuse the, well, low-budget-ness of it all. I love the version on the left with all the straw hats by the way.

India Noyonita Lodh: Noyonita had this photo on her Official Facebook Page so I assumed it might be her National Costume. If so, it's pretty great! Miss India NEEDS to "bring it" when it comes to a national costume at Miss Universe. No If, And's, or But's.

Indonesia Elvira Devinamira: Three words: You. Go. Girl. Leave it to Miss Indonesia to always up the Costume ante. That headdress is slaying me! I just don't understand how something like this gets transported half way across the world. And it doesn't get lost! And who gets charged for the baggage fees? Certainly not the Miss Universe Org. I am sure of that.

Ireland Lisa Madden: An Irish Warrior Princess I presume? Even if it isn't, she looks HOT!

Japan Keiko Tsuji: Speaking of a warrior...my guess is that Keiko is vibing Sexy Samurai. I like it!

Kazakhstan Aiday Issayeva: Feathered wings, bird feet, draped skirt/sarong, cropped bustier...if this is really the National Costume of Miss Universe Kazakhstan, then...I cannot wait!

Feathers, Jewels and Golden Trims: Preview of National Costumes from Miss Universe 2014 contestants--Clockwise from top: Miss Universe Nicaragua, Miss Universe Thailand, Miss USA, Miss Universe Panama

In my previous post HERE I discussed Part 1 of Miss Universe 2014/2015 National Costumes including contestants from Albania to Kazakhstan. Now, it's time for Part 2: Malaysia to Venezuela. These are just "previews" gathered from the web and some of the contestant's social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) so...things might change. But for now...here are these Miss Universe 2014 National Costumes:

Malaysia Sabrina Beneett: I love the multicolored feathers, the multi-layered golden necklace...and that headdress!!! Oh, and yes, Sabrina looks oh so sexy and divine; she is giving you Malaysian Jungle Diva!

Mexico Josselyn Garciglia: In this photo above, Josselyn is wearing a feathered costume using many different types of feathers--including peacock--but there's also lots of sequins and a side front slit. She's very "Native Empress Couture" with this. Part of me wishes she somehow also incorporated a Mariachi hat as well!

Myanmar Sharr Htut Eaindra: That elephant in the background better watch out! Because Miss Universe Myanmar might be coming to get you! This red and golden accented costume is quite fabulous--blending both tradition and fantasy. I just wish those gold Stripper Platform Heels weren't part of the look.

Nicaragua Marline Barberena: Nicaragua always BRINGS IT when it comes to Pre-Columbian National Costumes. And this year is no exception for Miss Universe Nicaragua Marline Barberena. This costume might win as Best Costume at this year's Miss Universe...if just for those parrots/birds that are placed where her hands should be!

Norway Elise Dalby: Elise's costume is very Norway Traditional. It's cute but seriously, how can you compete with Miss Universe Nicaragua!!??

Panama Yomatzy Hazlewood de la Rosa: From the looks of the photo above, Yomatzy is also going the Pre-Columbian National Costume route--a very popular choice it seems! I like the turquoise blue feathers and silver/blue/turquoise sequin detail and golden neck-piece. She's very "Carnival Queen" in this.

Peru Jimena Espinoza Vecco: Miss Universe Peru's National Costume is also a Pre-Columbian Empress (what a surprise?). But seriously, if anyone is going to do that theme--costume-wise--leave it to Peru to really BRING IT! I LOVE this! I don't even mind the black with gold detail platform heels! That fabulous INCA headdress is INCREDIBLE!!! I just want to know how much the airline she traveled in charged her in extra baggage (for that!).

Poland Marcela Chmielowska: I really like this "National Costume" form Miss Universe Poland. It's simple, chic and still makes a strong point when it comes to the nation she is representing. It's a lesson in Less Is More!

Puerto Rico Gabriela Berrios: Gabriela's white gown is quite exquisite; there's the "lace" cut-outs and the silver sequined under gown, plus that necklace...I know that this is supposed to be her National Costume but with some editing, it could easily double as a Couture-worthy red carpet gown.

Russia Yulia Alipova: Check out that neck-piece and headdress!! Yulia is really representin'"Tsarina Diva"!

Sweden Camilla Hansson: Camilla's costume blends a bit of Traditional and a bit of Fantasy in this ivory high neck sequined gown with red sequin bow waist detail. She reminds me of a Christmas Angel; maybe that's the point.

Switzerland Zoe Metthez: Miss Universe Switzerland's national costume involves a white one shoulder gown with red bust inset and, naturally, the Swiss flag. This is definitely--and unmistakably--a Swiss representative!
Thailand Pimbongkod "Ellie" Chankaew: Miss Universe Thailand's costume was created and designed by Akarapawin Sophon, who won a recent design competition to Design the National Costume for Miss Universe Thailand. The costume is entitled "Shadow of Siam". I love it!

Ukraine Diana Harkusha: Diana's costume reminds me of a glorious Ukrainian beauty...Rising from the Ashes (of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict). Maybe that is the point.

USA Nia Sanchez: Miss USA's costume is very Las Vegas Showgirl. And it makes sense sine Nia is from...you guessed it, Las Vegas!

Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos: Miss Venezuela's costume is supposed to represent the Venezuelan National Tree--the Araguaney, a bright yellow leaf tree. It was designed by Venezuelan designer Nidal Nouaihed and as you can see, really pays tribute to that tree. I have to say that in terms of a National Costume, it is quite fabulous!

Which National Costume is YOUR Favorite??? Let me know!

Allison Williams in Armani Prive Fall 2014 Couture

Actress Allison Williams of HBO's "Girls" and NBC's Peter Pan Live, wore a strapless red sequined silk organza gown from Armani Prive. The gown featured many, many tiers of organza--all hand sewn over a base skirt and with thousands of Swarovski crystals, all hand applied as well (of course!) on top of the gown. On the Fall 2014 Haute Couture Paris runway, the gown was shown with a black netting veil with chenille "paillettes". Thank goodness Allison (and her stylist) chose not to include this veil for the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet.

I thought Allison looked quite beautiful in this gown and I also liked the hair and super smokey makeup. What do you guys think?

Jessica Chastain in Atelier Versace

Actress Jessica Chastain (loved her in "Interstellar") went 1940s-like Hollywood Glam at the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet. She wore a copper-colored silk halter gown from Atelier Versace. The gown features a plunging neckline, knotted twist at the center front waist and hand gathered detail...

Movie Legend: Veronica Lake

I loved Jessica's Veronica Lake-like hair and clean "nude" makeup. And notice her dark nail color. What do we think about that? To be honest, I'm not so sure I likey...

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall 2014

Leave it to Jennifer Lopez to not disappoint when it comes to bringing the DIVA factor up 1000% !!! J Lo wore a silver sequined handmade gown from Zuhair Murad haur Couture Fall/Winter 2014 collection. The gown had a plunging neckline (with a semi-modesty panel), a super high center front slit and...

Drama Queen: A very dramatic exaggerated sleeve/cape. Only Jennifer Lopez could pull such a Diva gown like this off. On the red carpet--while being interviewed--she said that she was actually going to wear this gown for the American Music Awards but decided instead to save it for the Golden Globes. Must be nice to have the opportunity to "save" $100,000+ costing Haute Couture gowns.

I thought she looked FABULOUS in this gown. If there was any critique, I just wasn't a fan of the hair. It looked a bit 2004.

Claire Danes in Valentino Spring 2015

"Homeland" actress Claire Danes wore a very Boho-Chic gown from Valentino Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear and the design house's designers/creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. When I first saw this dress, I gasped "It's READY-TO-WEAR!" (as opposed to Haute Couture...or Custom!) Mon Dieu! That is sooooo RETRO and so 2005 for an actress to actually wear a Ready-to-Wear gown on the red carpet! (I hope you can tell I am being facetious...and a bit sarcastic as well!).

But back to the dress--it featured lots and lots of feathers sewn simultaneously with jeweled crystals and applique. From far away, one would never know those were feathers in the dress and instead it would just seem like a print or embroidery.

Claire's makeup looked clean, soft and very pretty and I also liked the softly pulled back hair.

Lupita Nyong'o in Giambattista Valli Fall 2014 Haute Couture

Actress and "red carpet all-star"Lupita Nyong'o wore this lilac and ivory strapless gown from Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2014. And I have to say...this was a MISS for me. Since Lupita has been so PERFECT and on-point on the red carpet this past year that well, she was bound to have a "Ooopsie" moment. And so here it is, in my opinion. Now, about the gown, it's a completely handmade gown with hand-sewn fathered "petals" at the bustier and a very full silk chiffon bottom part. the gown looked great on the runway and flowed like a DREAM as the model worked the catwalk. Unfortunately, on Lupita it is sorta CLUNKY and fell flat and almost heavy. Dare I say, I feel as if she needed a crinoline or tulle petticoat underneath to give it some structure and life.

Lift it up Lupita: It's almost as if she KNEW that it needed something (her hand!) to give it "life". I have to say that I wasn't a fan of this dress on her. On a good note: Loved her hair and makeup. What did you guys think of this dress on Lupita? Yay or Nay?

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen Spring 2015

"Girls" star Lena Dunham wore a red silk duchesses satin hi-lo gown from Zac Posen Spring 2015 collection. Dunham did say that it was funny to have her former babysitter (yes, Zac Posen was her babysitter--you know you are NYC/Manhattan Upper Class when Zac Posen was your babysitter! Lena's father is a well known painter and mother, a photographer and artist). Anyhow...back to Lena and this gown: I have to say this is one of the best red carpet looks I've seen from Lena in a while. The gown featured a high batteau neck, scooped back, hi-lo hemline and front torso and side seaming. The shape was loose (which I am sure made it more comfortable for her to wear).

The seaming on the dress is quite interesting but I do still feel that the silhouette needed a bit more of a defined shape. The color, however, looked great on her!

Keira Knightley in Custom Chanel (inspired by Chanel Pre-Fall 2015)

Actress Keira Knightley wore this dress at tonight's 2015 Golden Globes. The gown is a custom Chanel dress inspired by a look from the Chanel Pre-Fall 2015 collection. Keira, as you may remember, is after all, a Chanel spokesperson so she is contractually obligated to wear Chanel and mostly ONLY Chanel. The gown features a big ol' doily-like bib, an Empire cut accented by a black satin band, butterfly and fauna sequined appliques and three bottom doily-like tiers (please tell me doilies will NOT be the rage for 2015!). Thank goodness those sleeves from the runway look were taken out for this new version. And I can understand the Empire silhouette since Keira is a mom-to-be and expecting her first child. The gown supposedly took THIRTY people to make it (!) in only a week's time. She accented and styled the look with a butterfly wrist band and black clutch.

While Keira's hair and makeup look nice, the dress, however, is a mess. I want to know the following: WHO ILL-ADVISED HER TO WEAR THIS??? There's nothing flattering, chic or remotely stylish about this. I can understand it in an episode of "Downton Abbey" in a 1924 Period piece but, in 2015 at the Golden Globes?? The best thing about it all is that butterfly wrist cuff.
I have two theories on Keira and this choice of gown:
A) She didn't want to offend Karl Lagerfeld and wore it as opposed to creating tension and saying "Nope, I'm not wearing this!" or,
B) Keira actually DID want to wear this (the Empire-cut/semi baby doll shape for her pregnant body) and somehow thought it was cute!
If it is the latter, I am scared. What do guys think of this dress on Keira?

Emma Stone in Custom Lanvin

Actress Emma Stone wore this strapless black and sequined jumpsuit custom-made for her by the French fashion house of Lanvin and its creative director Alber Elbaz. The ensemble featured a heavily jeweled bodice with silver crystals attached to slim "cigarette" cropped pants with tailored pintucks down the leg. The entire look was finished off with a silk gazar sash. I think she looked modern and fresh. And while, yes, it was rather 'sporty" of her to wear pants, it still packed enough DAZZLE (in the bustier) to give it a special red carpet effect. It was probably slightly inspired by this look from...
Lanvin Pre-Fall 2015 collection

Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace

Kate Hudson--always a devoted fan of the House of Versace--did not disappoint red carpet watchers at the 2015 Golden Globes, and yes, wore Atelier Versace. And I think she looked Fabulous...

Ivory Goddess: The ivory silk crepe gown featured a plunging front halter neckline (a BIG TREND at this year's Golden Globes red carpet), a sexy "t-strap" back and a fluid mermaid silhouette. The dress fit her to perfection--as it should since it was Atelier and custom-made for Kate!

There were also side cut-out's (it's Versace after all!!) highlighted by Swarovski hand-sewn crystal straps.  If I had one complaint, it would be that the make up was too severe. I understand trying to match the drama of the gown, but I think she would have been better served with a softer touch to the make up.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....Golden Globes 2015: Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen

Salma Hayek wore this ivory strapless brocade ball gown by Alexander McQueen. Her husband, as you may know, is Francois-Henri Pinault, Chairman of Kering, the French luxury goods company that owns Gucci, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen, so naturally, Hayek wore a brand owned by her husband, Thank You very much. It's a pretty gown but I think Salma OVER styled it...

Too Mucheey: Not only does she have diamond feather earrings, a diamond cuff, a jeweled purse, then there's a silver metallic belt...and if that wasn't enough...she added flowers in her hair! She looks more like a "Miss Universe" contestant at a "Pageant Arrival Dinner" than an A-List Hollywood actress (and not to mention the wife of a a man who is worth an estimated $15 BILLION!).

I think Salma could have done without so much stuff. And I haven't even mentioned that the strapless bustier section is GAPING and fits oddly (it looks like they needed to add a gusset to the side seam) and from the looks of the gown hem, it seems to have been hemmed quite a bit (about 10 inches) as seen from a slightly visible hem stitch toward the bottom of the dress.

Felicity Jones in Christian Dior

"The Theory of Everything" actress Felicity Jones--the newest Fashion "It" Girl--wore a teal blue ball gown from Christian Dior. The gown featured an ultra modern high neck, seamed to the top to contour the shape, box-pleated bodice as well as box-pleated attached full skirt. I thought she looked elegant, modern and still Hollywood Glamour fab!

Three-Quarter Shot: Felicity kept the styling simple with the jewelry and chose to wear only a pair of vintage-inspired Van Cleef & Arpels earrings. Salma Hayek should take a lesson from Felicity (see my previous blog posting HERE). I thought this was one of my favorite gowns of the night.

Heidi Klum in Atelier Versace

Miss Heidi Klum looked every bit a SUPERMODEL Hollywood Seductress in this fiery red one shoulder gown from Atelier Versace. The silk chiffon gown featured a hand-gathered top and side panels, as well as a sequined bugle beaded strapless bustier top section. And naturally, it also had a long dramatic train and center front opening/slit.

The gown fit Heidi TO PERFECTION! On that note: I hope the ladies in the Versace Atelier are having a nice big LIMONCELLO right about now and celebrating that they seemed to dress half the Red Carpet at tonight's Golden Globe Awards! I'm sure their poor little fingers need a rest after all the work they must have been doing this last week.

Hopefully, they can rest now back in their Four Seasons/Beverly Wilshire/Beverly Hills Hotel suites that the Versace execs put them up in to do all the alterations and last minute fixings.

CES Fab: Emceeing the "FashionWare Show Presented by Living In Digital Times" at the 2015 International CES/Consumer Electronics Show Las Vegas

This past week, I flew to Las Vegas to emcee the"FashionWare Show Presented by Living In Digital Times"at the 2015 International CES/Consumer Electronics Show. This was my first time ever attending the CES and...WOW! I didn't know what to expect. First off, I assumed there would be a lot of electronics and tech stuff. Needless to say, not my field. I am a fashion designer.

But the minute I got off my flight and waited to get my credentials at the McCarran Las Vegas International Airport, I knew my pre-conceived notions of who would be attending this type of trade show, were smashed. I assumed there would be a lot of eyeglass wearing, pleated pants Computer Geeks. And boy, was I wrong: there were LOTS of Williamsburg/San Francisco Hipster bearded boys with skinny jeans and ankle boots and hip "Grandma" sweaters and even the businessmen were wearing slim suits, flat front pants and (gasp!) tucked in dress shirts! Little did I know that CES was Fashionable Hip! (yes, now I do!)

After checking in to my Palms Casino and Resort Hotel (colorfully decorated room!), I made my way to the main event--the 2015 International CES Tech East at the Las Vegas World Trade Convention Center. I checked out some of the tech booths including...

Colorful iPhone cases from OtterBox at 2015 International CES Las Vegas

Tech Couture: Nick Verreos and model wearing the Smart 3-D Printed Spider Dress powered by Intel Edison and designed and created by Anouk Wipprecht--2015 International CES Las Vegas

Bedazzled Wearables: I checked out the very bling'ed-bling'ed Swarovski Shine Misfit Wearables--I LOVED the Swarovski/Misfit Activity Trackers bracelets which wrap around my wrist and that necklace in the above pic was just SuperFab! I got the chance to try them on and take photos with them but alas, needed to give them back....ah well.
What I did get though was this great TRUECLEAR Invisiglass Screen Protector from Belkin-- At the 2015 CES Belkin Booth, they actually had a staff installing these to everybody's mobile phones! And I was happy to get in line. Thank you Belkin!

Tech Sunglasses: While I was roaming the exhibitors I also tried on the ODG Osterhout Design Group Smart Glasses. The wearer can read email, see movies and do much, much more, with just wearing those eyeglasses! They're even solar-proof! I wish I could have those on my next holiday in Mykonos!

TYLT: I LOVED these TYLT smartphone & tablet chargers! TYLT makes a vast array of smartphone and tablet battery chargers that are not only fabuslously useful but stylish as well (love the colors!

Style Interviews: In advance of hosting the "FashionWare Show" I had the chance to do many interviews including one with Spanish-language TV and CNet (above pics).

The FashionWare Show--I had the honor of hosting not one, not two but THREE FashionWare Shows at the 2015 International CES--here are some pics:

Costume No-No: Miss Universe Costa Rica 2014 Karina Ramos in her "illegal" Daniel Moreira-designed "National Costume"

There's a bit of a Wardrobe ESCANDALO happening at the Miss Universe 2014 pageant taking place in Doral, Florida. It seems that the national costume Costa Rica's representative, the beautiful Karina Ramos's, had planned on wearing has gotten the No-No from the Costa Rican government. How do say Ooopsie en español
Miss Universe Costa Rica 2014 Karina Ramos

While most the contestants have been dealing with fancy parties, dinners, photoshoots and enjoying South Florida in advance of the Finals on January 25th, Miss Costa Rica has also been dealing with a Wardrobe/Political Crisis. Last Friday, the designer of the National Costume in question--Daniel Moreira--received a call from the Department of Costa Rican Foreign Ministry Office of Protocol alerting him that Karina "Miss Universe Costa Rica 2014" Ramos, could not wear the costume that she brought with her designed by him, because it was adorned with Costa Rica's coat of arms and therefore was an inappropriate use of the national symbol. The "costume" in question was actually part of Daniel Moreira's collection shown at Mercedes-Benz San Jose (Costa Rica) Fashion Week 2013:

"Miss Universe Costa Rica 2014""national costume, originally shown at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week San Jose (Costa Rica) 2013 Daniel Moreira's collection

Here's the Costa Rica flag and the coat of arms that he could not put in his design:
The spokesman from the Foreign Ministry cited an obscure 1906 law regulating the proper use of national symbols and also added that it was a "courtesy call". The designer got the message: CHANGE THE COSTUME
Costa Rican fashion designer Daniel Moreira
Daniel--after a bit of huffing and puffing (I'd be miffed too!) agreed to create a new costume and have it shipped in time for the National Costume Presentation and Preliminary Competition scheduled for January 21st (a week from now!). He defended the original ensemble saying that it was a modern vision of patriotism, lacking all the over-the-top (and sometimes tacky) feathers and cheap sequins and "Parade Float" elements that one normally sees in these beauty pageant national costumes. In an interview, he even went on to say that "people who don't know fashion should keep their opinions to themselves" (Amen Sistah!). Anyhow...the new costume will showcase Costa Rica's rich biodiversity and in fact, the designer added, he was going to also hand paint it himself.

Pre-Columbian Goddess: Miss Costa Rica 2011 Johanna Solano at Miss Universe 2011

Peacock Flora and Fauna: Miss Costa Rica 2010 Marva Wright Urena at Miss Universe 2010

Yes, lots of feathers and Pre-Columbian Empress Flora, Fauna and Gold...it will be interesting to see what direction Costa Rican fashion designer Daniel Moreira ended up taking. He might resist the above "National Costume" types and go for a more folkloric look. Below are photos of what Costa Rican "traje tipicos" (traditional costumes) look like:

Costa Rica traditional dress for women

I noticed that there was one look from Daniel Moreira's Mercedes-Benz San Jose Fashion Week collection that had some of those "folkloric" elements...
So...this above could be a possible contender for Karina Ramos'"Miss Universe Costa Rica 2014" National Costume. Or maybe not? We'll see soon!

Good Gowns: Miss Universe 2014 contestants--Clockwise from top: Philippines, Korea, Venezuela and Colombia--Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown Portraits

It's Miss Universe Evening Gown Time again!!! The Miss Universe 2014 beauty pageant is happening right now in Doral Florida. 88 contestants from all over the world are competing for the coveted crown. The Finals will be televised on NBC on January 25th. The Evening Gown Portraits were just published on the MissUniverse.com website which means...time to discuss the gowns!

From seeing the photos--and gowns--it's an obvious mix of contestants who borrowed some of those Sherri Hill (a sponsor of "Miss Universe") dresses from the Miss Universe Wardrobe Department and contestants who wore what they brought. Also, as any seasoned pageant-watcher knows, these gowns don't necessarily reflect what the contestants will wear for the all-important preliminaries and/or the Finals. Nevertheless, let's Talk Gowns--Here were some of my Favorites and don't worry, following this, I'll be doing the "Uh Oh!" List...

    The Good:
Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos: Miss Universe Venezuela wore this red gown designed by Venezuelan pageant designer Gionni Straccia. It's one of my favorite gowns from this year's Miss Universe Evening Gown portraits. This strapless gown features a drop waist, "mermaid lite" silhouette and the Gionni Straccia signature jeweled sequins that has made his gowns coveted by any pageant girl who can afford them! I like the simple and elegant shape, lack of tacky-licious elements and the fact that it fits nice and is the correct length and I don't see those tacky platform stripper pumps! Muy Bueno!

Colombia Paulina Vega: This gown is simply superb. The golden\nude sequined bias-cut dress is perfect for an A-List Hollywood actress at any top awards show. Paulina looks every bit a STAR in this style which features a plunging neckline and delicate shoulder-grazing crystal straps. her modern side-swept hair and "nude" makeup looks fresh and on-trend--she's the opposite of "Pageant Betty" and I LIKEY!

Switzerland Zoe Metthez: I love this nude/blush sequined gown worn by Miss Universe Switzerland. The dress has a heavily jeweled bodice with silver mirrored sequins that are then hand sewn sparingly throughout the gown. The dress fits beautifully and is impacting enough to make the perfect gown statement.

USA Nia Sanchez: Miss USA wore this ivory heavy applique lace mermaid-shaped gown for the Miss Universe Evening Gown Portrait. I think this was a nice choice for Nia; the white looks great against her skin and the style hits all the right notes of sexy (the fit, the open back) and covered up (the long sleeves).

Germany Josefin Donat: This gown on Miss Universe Germany is ethereal, Cleopatra-like and makes Josefin look like a Pageant Angel. I love the flowy skirt and the gold trim at the waist and neck. I just wish the bodice was draped or had chiffon gathering; that would make it look more expensive and not so off-the-rack.

Korea Ye Bin Yoo: Well done Miss Universe Korea! I love the midnight blue color, the modern asymmetrical neckline style and subtle draping. It's one of the most SUPER Chic dresses in these Miss Universe Evening Gown Portraits.

Kenya Gaylyne Ayugi: First off, I'm loving Gaylyne and her mini afro; she's giving me Lupita Nyong'o hair fabulousness! In addition, I'm also loving this ivory halter column gown on her. The dress is elegant, fits nice, is to the floor (no big clunky platform shoes showing, thank you very much!), and has slight elements of something one would see from an Atelier Versace Couture collection (the Art Deco-like silver sequin work).

Argentina Valentina Ferrer: I really like this gold sequined gown on Miss Universe Argentina. I think it fits nice, the style is sexy yet red carpet fab, I love the front covered up and the mini cap sleeves and small dramatic train. The fit of the gown is also very good; Valentina made a perfect style choice in wearing this gown....she should NEVER take it off!

Egypt Lara Debbane: For me, Lara wore one of the best gowns in these Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown portraits. The gown is pretty stunning; I love the sequin/sheer panels and the way they are placed throughout the gown. I also appreciate the fact that there is a nude-colored dress underneath that hits mid-thigh to keep it CLASSY.  Very good Miss Universe Egypt!

Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa: Mary Jean looks almost too Pageant Perfect in this wine red velvet strapless gown. It's a nice gown with expensive sequin detail at the bustier and therefore it's here in my "Good" list. I just think that the Sweetheart neckline makes it a little too "Pageant Betty 1998" and the too-many-accessories doesn't help. Part of me just wishes she would take style tips from her Miss World Philippines counterpart Valerie Weigmann and the gown she wore at last month's Miss World.

Bahamas Tomii Culmer: While I realize that this is probably an off-the-rack Sherri Hill gown, it's one of the best. The violet blue color looks amazing on Tomii and the fit and dramatic ball gown style is elegant and fab as well. I also love her styling and hair; she looks like a movie star!

Indonesia Elvira Devinamira: I LOVE this gown--the gold exaggerated paillettes pack such a punch that I can only imagine this gown on stage with the lights hitting it: OMG! What I don't love are those gold too-stacked heels!!! Seeing that almost ruins it for me. So...two things, the dress is too short and I don't want to see those platforms, and maybe change the shoes to gold strappy NON PLATFORM heels. Pronto!

Great Britain Grace Levy: This is a very pretty gown on Miss Universe Great Britain. I think it's one of those gowns that can be very impacting on stage and as you can see, looks wonderful on the super-tall Grace (she's almost six feet tall!). I love that the gown is the right length (notice she's NOT wearing Stripper Platform Pumps!), and the sequin-over-nude detail with the solid white crepe is a great design detail. This could have gone "Figure Skating Costume-y" but in fact, it went the opposite, into high end gown category.

Mexico Josselyn Garciglia: Several things here--this is A LOT of gown. But I like it! I love the salmon pink color and sequined applique. It's dramatic sweep and train might be a little too-mucheey but for me, it still kind of works! And I have to give Josselyn credit for not over-accessorizing and just keeping it simple by only wearing earrings.

Russia Yulia Alipova: Speaking of A LOT--Exhibit A: Miss Russia. One word: WOW. And it's Elie Saab Haute Couture from his Fall 2014 collection! This gown is truly a work of Couture art! And probably cost about $175,000. Not sure if she actually ordered it and bought it, or she may have a very. very rich Russian Arms Dealer boyfriend who did! Or she pulled lots of strings to borrow it from the Elie Saab Press Office...whatever she did, I'm glad! The dramatic ball gown shape, the incredible print, the hand-placed strawberry-colored flower sequin appliques on the bodice and torso area...this gown is one of those dresses that can SHUT IT DOWN once she steps on stage. I just want Yulia to be picked as one of the Top 15 semifinalists just so I can see her wear this gown! SHUT IT DOWN YULIA!!! Please!!!

Puerto Rico Gabriela Berrios: I am sure this is another gown that many people will either LOVE or HATE (just like Miss Russia's). When I first saw the photo--and gown--I was like "Ummm, well...not-so-sure" and then after looking at it more, I began to like it. I love the apple green color of the column under-gown and I also like the horsehair netting over-skirt. It's an unusual design that could work on the runways (it's very Carolina Herrera-like) but it will be interesting if it can work at Miss Universe. I'm hoping it does!

Slovak Republic Silvia Prochadzkova: Miss Universe Slovak Republic is the epitome of a Mermaid Queen in this strapless white gown. The shape is good, the fabric texture adds a bit of dimension to this rather basic gown, the length is right as well as fit. I'm not a fan of the Sweetheart neckline (too "Pageant 101") and showcases the "sisters" a bit too much, but Silvia looks sweet and quite pretty in this.

South Africa Ziphonzakhe Zokufa: Ziphonzakhe looks very pretty in this gown--especially in this fuchsia pink color. the gown also has silver sequin torso/bodice detail that gives it a great "three-quarter shot". The shape and fabrication of the gown are also great. I just wish the gown was 3 inches longer in the front so I wouldn't have to see the silver peeptoe heels.

Spain Desiree Cordero: This is one of those gowns that look amazing and very impacting in a photo (check out that dramatic and very sweeping train!), but it will be interesting (if she wears it at the Preliminary Competition or the Finals) how it moves onstage. I like the gunmetal gray/blue color and sequin panels of this gown and it reminds me of something I would see from an Atelier Versace Couture collection. I only question the excessiveness of that sweeping train.

Jamaica Kaci Fennell: The last gown I want to put here in my "Good" list is this one worn by Miss Universe Jamaica. Although there is A LOT to this gown, the elements all somewhat work and go together. I can totally see someone like Halle Berry wearing a similar style to a big awards show.

Oh No!!!! A potpourri of BAAAD gowns--Miss Universe 2014 contestants (Clockwise top to bottom) Bulgaria, Guatemala, Croatia and Mauritius--Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown portraits

In my last post, I discussed my "Good Gown" favorites from the just-released-on-the-website "Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown Portraits" pics. Naturally, what follows are the "Oh No!" List. And there were plenty, kids! Not sure what happens to these beautiful women when it comes to choosing gowns; whether it is their own style or all their pageant handlers around them that are involved...but, whatever the case, these ladies made some Not-So-Good choices.
Let's check out the "UH OH Gowns":
Croatia Ivana Misura: There's no way around it, there is WAAAY too much sheer. And the applique placements on the sisters and her you-know-what aren't helping. I think the red sequin applique is actually quite nice, I just wish that I could get some more of it and cover Ivana up! She's competing for Miss Universe NOT Miss Hoochie!

India Noyonita Lodh: Petite Noyonita (her stats say she's 5' 6" but you know that means she's more like 5' 5" if not shorter)...anyhow, Miss Universe India looks like a cheap stripper in this very sheer dress with silver paillettes. It's not cute or tasteful and then there's those too clunky nude platform heels! There's nothing that says I AM TOO SHORT more than showing these kind of shoes. She is sooo pretty. I am a bit embarrassed for her. let's just hope she changes her gown for the Preliminaries. Please.

Honduras Gabriela Ordonez:Mija!!! What is this look and pose??!! This looks like a photo I'd see at a Las Vegas Stripper Show Billboard. She needs to tone it all down. Big time. The sheer gold applique dress that's too short, the too-sheer-ness, the nude pointy heels...it's all lacking a level of taste and therefore she is on my "Uh Oh!" List.

Haiti Christie Desir: NO. I just can't with this sheer canary yellow applique and sequins gown; there's just a lot to take in and none of it good. And then--as if it was necessary--she wears these too-big earrings and BRONZED peeptoe platform heels that have absolutely NOTHING to do with this kind of gown. #BlessHerHeart

Costa Rica Karina Ramos: Karina--of the National Costume Drama--wore this ivory gown (if you could call it that) for the Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown Portraits. The dress is VERY "Figure Skating Costume NOT!" and more importantly, what is with the chiffon fall right at the center front (??!!) showcasing her you-know-what and the two (not one!) leg openings/slits. Oh, and then there's a peek-a-boo of some tacky silver platform heels. Of course. Ayyyy Mija!! Karina is too pretty for such a tasteless gown.

Lithuania Patricija Belousova: Oh Patricija. Here's another example of a "Bless-Your-Heart Gown". She looks so happy and proud. Yet, this looks as if her grandma--or first year fashion school student--made it. Here's some advice to her: watch past Miss Universe Pageants and what the Winner wore. And then we'll TWALK!

Dominican Republic Kimberly Castillo: I'm still a bit speechless that THIS BLAH of a fuchsia jacquard printed strapless gown is what Kimberly chose to wear for the "Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown Portraits". It is such a throw-away of a gown. WHYYYY????? Let me remind you: Miss Russia wore a $175,000 Elie Saab Haute Couture Gown !

Thailand Pimbongkod Changkaew: I love me some fringe but this is a bit too cocktail/casual for an Evening Gown portrait. This gorgeous beauty is over six feet tall and THIS is what she decided to wear!!??? And with those shoes and necklace??!!! She looks like she's going to a "Chicago: The Musical" After Party and not competing for Miss Universe.

Lebanon Saly Greige: This is so disappointing, knowing that she had the chance to wear Zuhair Murad Haute Couture for the "Miss Lebanon 2014" pageant. I don't mind so much the style (I like the print) but it's that unnecessary rosette at the waist and crystal strapless bustier and platform heels that makes it too tacky-licious.

Curacao Laurien Angelista: While I appreciate the drama of this gown, it's just Too Mucheey, when it comes to the purple lace sequined applique and the midriff boned corset. Maybe on stage, this might look amazing, but in the photo, it looks a bit "Oh No!".

Ghana Abena Appiah: Part of me wants to like this because it's obviously custom and not a borrowed Sherri Hill gown. But...it's just a bit too tacky. The gold applique looks quite nice but then paired with neon green tulle, it cheapens it. The overall effect is a bit of a mess. This gown would have been fine all gold and without the tulle.

Guatemala Ana Montufar Urrutia: I love the overall silhouette of this yellow and lilac sequin gown. But then...WHY. Oh Why...are there gathered yellow tulle ruffle tiers!!??? Please remove those. Now! It's just tacky and too-mucheey.

Slovenia Urska Bracko: Oh Urska! Who or What attacked your gown? The bottom half should have been left alone--with no tulle rosettes and definitely no pleated ruffle hem. This gown could have nice but it got bitten by the Tacky Design Virus.
Guyana Niketa Barker: Not a fan of the "pick-up" peplum and mermaid bottom section; it screams Prom-and-Pageant...and tacky. Niketa is too pretty for such a "Uh Oh!" gown.

Bulgaria Kristina Georgieva: Hands down, one of the most "Uh Oh!" gowns of the "Miss Universe 2014 Evening Gown Portraits". There's just A LOT to discuss: the 1980's sty;e, the Prom Pink organza, the strapless gold lace dress underneath, the waist sash with rosette detail...those silver platform heels. It all adds up to a definite "Uh No!".
Mauritius Pallavi Gungaram: How could the very pretty Pallavi not know this is a mess??!! While I like the deep fuchsia color and I can (almost) like the skirt section--sans the big ol' sequined and applique "bow"--the entire thing is a big ol' mess. I can almost hear the photographers thinking "GURL! This gown is a DEFINITE No...but go ahead, we'll take the photo nonetheless!".

Let's just hope some of these ladies read my blog and change their gowns for the Miss Universe 2014 Preliminaries on January 21st. We'll see.

The Best Gowns--Miss Universe 2014 contestants (Clockwise, from the top left: Mexico, Ukraine, Spain, Indonesia, Russia, and Colombia) during the Evening Gown portion of the Miss Universe 2014 Preliminaries Competition

The Miss Universe 2014 Preliminary Competition were held on Wednesday night at the FIU Arena, Florida International University in Doral/Miami Florida, and was also Livestream'ed on the web (that's how I watched them). This was the all-important competition lead-up to the Finals, which will be televised live on Sunday January 25th on NBC and Telemundo here in the United States.

Miss Universe 2014 Preliminary Competition--FIU Arena, Florida International University Doral/Miami Florida

The Preliminary Competition is judged by by a panel of judges different from the televised live finals--usually for the Preliminaries there are entertainment/model agents industry professionals/executives and so on, while on the night of the finals, you'll find more "TV" (Read: NBC/Universal/Bravo talent) personalities/famous entertainers. During the Prelims, the top 15 Semi Finalists are chosen after seeing the contestants parade in Swimsuits and Evening Gowns. And yes, kids, what I am interested are the latter: the Gowns. Some kept the same gowns they wore for the Miss Universe Website Evening Gown Portraits and lots wore different ones.

Gown Smiles: Miss Universe 2014 contestants (Left to right: Mauritius, Malaysia, Lithuania and Lebanon) during the Evening Gown portion of the Preliminary Competition--FIU Arena, Florida International University Doral/Miami Florida

So...let's discuss what I thought were some of the better choices. In this post I've divided it into three categories:
    * Good Gowns: my top picks for best gowns of the night
    * At-a-Girl: contestants who wore slightly over-the-top gowns that I liked, and
    * Could Have Been Better: contestants that well, were Almost Good...keep reading, you'll see what I mean.

Here we go! My Top Gown Pick Is...
Colombia Paulina Vega: One word: WOW! When Paulina walked onstage in this shimmery silver sequined column gown, I gasped! I think I even screamed at my computer screen (remember, I was watching it on the web!), "Yep! There's Your Winner..or at least First Runner-Up!". The gown fit PERFECTLY. It was modern, red carpet fab, had stage presence, and her styling was fresh, modern and on-point: the clean non-"Pageant-Betty" hair, great makeup, lack of accessories...This girl is ON IT! Oh, and yes, did I mention that this was a GORGEOUS gown!!?? Now I did.

Spain Desiree Cordero: Desiree is a front-runner (in my eyes!) to win the top crown; she has it all--the body, sparky personality, she's beautiful...oh and she wore one of m FAVE gowns. She also wore a silver/ivory gown (very popular with the "top" girls). Hers was a strapless fitted Siren-like silhouette that featured exquisitely placed sequins and jewels. This gown was A STUNNER!

Ukraine Diana Harkusha: I just about dropped my dinner and glass of red wine...when I saw Miss Universe Ukraine wear one of my favorite gowns from the Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall 2014collection. Yes, kids, it's COUTURE! And would cost in the high regions of $100,000+ if you were to order it! The strapless silk organza gown features all hand-sewn crystals (the gown is also HAND SEWN!), an asymmetrical front silhouette with exaggerated cascade drapes. I also loved that she did an elegant center-front parted high bun as her hairstyle to give it an added extra "I'm a DIVA who is wearing a FABULOUS $100,000 gown!" exclamation mark.

Russia Yulia Alipova: Miss Universe Ukraine wasn't the only contestant wearing actual Paris Haute Couture...Miss Russia was not about to be overshadowed darlings! Yulia wore another of my favorite "Good Gowns" last night: a crimson red silk satin ball gown from Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall 2013. This gown is absolute perfection: it's Grace Kelly Hollywood Glamour classic, elegant and features all the details of a true Couture dress. It is all hand made, has hand sewn crystal applique and the folded skirt drapes add exuberant sweeping drama. If there was one critique, I only wish, she would have done without the earrings and without the semi-pouffy hair; I would  have copied the runway model.

Mexico Josselyn Garciglia: Josselyn wore one of the Top Picks for a gown during last night's Miss Universe 2014 Preliminaries; it was BEYOND! The column shaped gown featured gold sequins with gold and copper jeweled neckline highlighting a great three-quarter shot. When Josselyn slithered onstage in this, I was like "SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!"Muy, muy bien mija!

Trinidad and Tobago Jevon King: I LOVED this white jersey "caftan" sleeved gown; it was modern, retro and unique. She definitely stood out--in a good way--in this super chic design. I loved the dramatic batwing/blouson sleeves, the gold sleeve hem and underbust sequin trim and it was great for the stage. Jevon looked like a modern day Cleopatra-meets-Diana Ross Fashon Diva!

Indonesia Elvira Devinamira: Elvira wore this silver halter gown featuring sequins, crystals and lace applique. The design was COUTURE-worthy and the fit was perfect. Therefore, this had to make my "Good Gown" list! I also liked her hair and choice of simple earrings (and nothing else, thank you very much!). It makes me happy to know that someone is actually reading fashion magazines, or looking at the Paris Runway Shows and also seeing what A-List actresses actually wear at top award show red carpets. Than you Elvira (and your Pageant Team!).

Thailand Pimbongkod Chankaew: Love this gown (of course, another silver/nude column style!). The stunning Pimbongkod is almost 6 foot tall so this style was perfect for her; it accentuated her height to no end! I thought she looked like she belonged at the Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet. And thank goodness her hair was fresh and non-pouffy and she limited her jewelry to a bracelet. How do you say "Excellent!" in Thai???!!

Czech Republic Gabriela Frankova: I thought this gold sequined gown was a nice choice for Miss Universe Czech Republic. I liked the silhouette and style of the gown with long sleeves, but more importantly, it was a strong impact on stage with the expensive-looking gold sequin detail...

I think that the fact that Miss Universe 2013 Maria Gabriela Isler (above at the Miss Universe 2013 pageant finals) wore a similar styled gown (long sleeves, covered body--in silver, of course) is by no means, a "fluke"; in other words, I think this is a style lots of beauty queens thought might work for them to help get that 2014-2015 crown.

USA Nia Sanchez: There were several red gowns worn at last night's Miss Universe 2014 Preliminaries and Nia's was one of the best! The gown fit her nicely, the style gave DRAMA (that train, the horsehair-trimmed hem). I thought that the mini spaghetti straps looked as if they were an after-thought (like it was supposed to be strapless but...). I thought this was a great gown. On a side note: she didn't need those earrings.

Jamaica Kaci Fennell: Another great red gown was the one worn by Miss Universe Jamaica Kaci Fennell. She's one of the favorite to win the crown and I can see why; she exuded major confidence, she's beautiful, and has THE MOST sexiest/sassiest runway walk! This red sequined applique gown could have gone a bit tacky-licious but the mini cap sleeve, high neck, lack of HOOCHIE slit, and her slicked pixie hairstyle...among other things...brought it all into chic, red carpet fab!

St. Lucia Roxanne Didier-Nicholas: Love this golden sequined tulle gown on Miss Universe St. Lucia. The silver jeweled paillettes were placed perfectly and I liked the ombre sequin effect (from heavy to light). The beautiful Roxanne wore a bicep silver crystal cuff and I just thought that it was not necessary; the dress speaks for itself darling, no need for that; it's actually distracting.

Kenya Gaylyne Ayugi: I also loved this ivory halter neckline gown with silver sequin details. She looked very Lupita Nyong'o-at-an-Atelier Versace runway show. It was chic, elegant and red carpet fab.

Lithuania Patricija Belousova: I thought Patricija looked Glam Perfect in this silver-gray strapless gown. The fit was nice and more importantly, the overall effect was impacting and just right! I loved the silver sequined bustier that then flowed into a full chiffon dress.
Neon Queens: I love COLOR and more importantly neon brights, and especially when it's done right. And here (Left to right) on Miss Universe Ecuador Alejandra Argudo and Miss Universe Netherlands Yazmin Verheijen, add up to two gown that belong in my "Good Gowns" list. Both ladies did it right!

Australia Tegan Martin: Tegan is one of the top favorites to get the Miss Universe crown. She's a modern day Christie Brinkley. In terms of her gown, it was Good for sure. The mermaid silhouette ft her well and the royal/electric blue color was very impacting. The gown also had a sequined bodice. It was VERY Sherri Hill, and it worked for her. Let's just say this gown is about five minutes from being "Pageant Betty" but it somehow, made my Good List.

Costa Rica Karina Ramos: Don't ask me why but...I liked this gown. Yes, it's A LOT. But Karina owned it and I think the fact that it was black, helped; if this kind of dress/style was bubblegum pink: OH NO HUNEY!!! So...I had to add her (and this gown) to my "Good List"; she WORKED IT! And in a good way.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Honorable Gown Mentions:
Several ivory/silver/nude/blush gowns (above) made my "Honorable Gown Mentions" section because they were nice gowns, with a nice fit and good sequin work. These ladies should be very (Style) proud!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At-A-Girl Gowns: These contestants "brought it!" when it came to the gowns they wore for the Miss Universe 2014 Preliminary Competition. It could have gone the "Oh-No-You-Didn't!" bad route, but for me it worked...

India Noyonita Lodh: Noyonita redeemed herself from the very HOOCHIE-licious dress she wore for the Miss Universe 2014 Website Evening Gown Portraits HERE. I was happy that she didn't wear that. I liked this gold sequined over golden organza design. It was the right choice for her. Did she need that slit? Nope. But I give her "At-a-Girl" points for the overall impact.

Ghana Abena Appiah: Serriously!!?? Abena is GIVING YOU!!!! THis gold sequined lace over salmon pink satin gown with train is very one-of-a-kind and looks Regal with a Capital "R". I thought this was a gown the wife of the Ambassador of Ghana would wear to a White House black tie reception...which is all good! ELEGANZAAAA!!!!

Singapore Rathi Menon: When Miss Universe Singapore walked onstage in this red sequined gown, I started humming Bizet's "Carmen". This gown was EVERYTHING. Yes, it was 97% a National Costume...for Miss Spain! But I still appreciated Rathi's daring style ability to just "GIVE IT!" It's A LOT of gown and could be considered a bit much, but...it's really, really good!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could Have Been (A Little Bit) Better: These are gowns that I liked and, for the most part, were Good, but there was just "something" that was...off:
Dominican Republic Kimberly Castillo: The gown, color, sequins, styling..all FAB. But...What are those bugle beaded fringe sequins doing???? The sequined fringe was so not necessary; they were very Liza Minnelli/Bob Fosse/Chicago. Everything else is just fine.

Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa: I LOVE the ivory paillette sequins on the torso and bodice. I just wish the sequins would have continued and there would not have been a see-through section right below her you-know-what. And then, there's the iridescent mermaid gathered bottom section. Any time I have to type IRIDESCENT...well, it's not cute. I just wish the gown would have been a column shape and ALL covered in those gorgeous sequin/paillettes.

    Finally...
Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos: I LOVE this Gionni Straccia-designed off-the-shoulder ivory sequined gown on Migbelis. I have to BOW down to the Gionni Straccia Atelier in Caracas (or wherever he has these gowns made) because that sequin and jewel work is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I just hope the ladies are paying the $$$$$ that this kind of work costs! My main critique is not with the gown but more with Migbelis. I think it was smart to make her a gown that was off the shoulder but I think she did herself a disservice by putting her hair in the front; she looked like she had NO NECK. She should have pushed her hair back.

OOOH GURL! The "Uh Oh!" Gowns from the 63rd Annual Miss Universe Preliminary Competition (Clockwise from top left: Italy, Argentina, Aruba, and Paraguay)--Miss Universe 2014 Preliminary Competition, FIU Arena, Florida International University Doral/Miami Florida

Pageant Fans...in my last post I discussed my FAVORITES of the evening gowns from Wednesday night's 63rd Annual Miss Universe Preliminary Competition so naturally, guess what follows? Yep! The Not-So-Good ones. So without further ado, here are my picks for some of the most Uh Oh!/Hoochie/Oh-No-She-Didn't Evening Gowns from the Miss Universe 2014 Prelims. Just a warning: lots of too-high slits, lamé, ripply seams and see-thru fabrics up to the CHA-CHA....and of course, Stripper Platform Heels. Don't say I didn't warn y'all. These girls should have known better. Let's begin:

Argentina Valentina Ferrer: Oh Valentina! She is so sexy and pretty (and her body WITHOUT this gown is SLAMMIN'!) but...this dress is a bit tacky. This bugglegum pink velvet concoction just screams "AVN Awards" (sorry); the scooped front slit/opening, the velvet, the fit, oh and then the silver crystal trim. No Mija!

Paraguay Sally Jara: When Sally walked out in this, I gasped! And it wasn't a good gasp. What. The. You-know-what!!?? The copper shoulder and torso panels and the blush colored iridescent organza and the "SI! That's my Cha-Cha!". What first year fashion school student made this for her for free?? Seriously? I think this could have been good if the copper panels just continued though the length of the gown. Or at least didn't stop up THERE.

Italy Valentina Bonariva: Valentina chose to wear a powder pink gown with a VERY HIGH slit. But that wasn't all that was in the gown---there were crystals and pleated panels...and a dyed-to-match organza overskirt. It was A LOT of Tacky-licious! To be honest, she looked like she just got invited to one of Former prime Minister of Italy Berluscony's Bunga Bunga Parties! How do you say #OhDear in Italian? On a good note, I liked her silver strappy heels. At least she didn't wear those platform ones! Grazie mille.

Aruba Digene Zimmerman: Digene walked onstage and it was a "Oh No She Didn't!". First, we saw that she was wearing a lilac printed dress of sorts with a sequined bodice but then, she did this:

And I was like "OOOOOOHHHH!!!!!!!" I have to say that I give her "At-a-Girl" points for even going there (and I am sure lots of Aruba drag queens will make her their next IDOL!), however...I just can't believe she wore a sequined swimsuit with an attached printed chiffon skirt! It was A) nervy but on a style level, a little Tacky-Licious. And B) yes, therefore, she is in my "Uh OH!" Miss Universe 2014  Preliminary Competition Gown List.

Canada Chanel Beckenlehner: Chanel wore a bubblegum pink colored strapless gown that yes, featured a peacock feathered train. Oh and if that wasn't enough, it had a a slit/opening and naturally, that wasn't enough so...she styled it with tacky too-high crystal Stripper Heels. I don't even know where to begin with this mess. I feel bad for the birds whose feathers were plucked for this. This gown would have been actually ind of nice if it was just a flared column all in the pink crepe satin without the opening and definitely without the "National Costume"-like feathered detail.

Norway Elise Dalby: Bless her heart. The gown is a white flower applique mess, and then there's that too-long hair. Everything about this just hangs there, if you know what I am saying. If this was made better, there would be no waist seam and it would be styled completely different. I get what she was going for, but it wasn't THIS:

Elie Saab Fall 2009 Haute Couture--I wish it was this!

Slovenia Urska Bracko: I did not like this gown when she wore it for the Miss Universe 2014 Website Evening Gown Portraits and I do not like it now. The silver against her pale skin is not cute and more importantly, the gown has waaaay too many unnecessary details; the gathered hem ruffles, the side rosettes, the mesh midriff...it's TOO MUCHEEY. And adds up to a Gown No-No.

El Salvador Patricia Murillo: Two words: GOLD LAME. I cannot believe she wore gold lame and did it with a smile. The gown is not so tacky, it's just the fabrication really. She reminds me of a melted Oscars statuesque. On a good note: I do love the heavy sequin detail at her neck; that looks intricate and expensive.

British Virgin Islands Jaynene Jno Lewis: File under "Bless Your Heart". I get that probably Jaynene and the Miss British Virgin Islands Organization may not have the gown budget of the Miss USA, Miss Russia (Elie Saab Haute Couture!!), or Miss Ukraine (Zuhair Murad Haute Couture!!) but this canary yellow poly satin mermaid silhouette gown is too tacky-licious. The bust fit is bad and I cannot get past the ripply side seams. I have to say, when you are competing on this level--at the Miss Universe--there is NO EXCUSE; either spend the money or bow out darling.

Serbia Andjelka Tomasevic: I know that a lot of pageant watchers think that Andjelka is a TOP FAVE to win the crown. But....hopefully not in this gown. This gown screams Figure Skating Costume No-No. The gown featured a tulle/netting base with sculpted pointed solid fabric pieces and sequins to resemble snow flakes (I think!). I just don't get the entire concept.

Tanzania Nale Boniface: While lots of the contestants chose to wear this type of gown--Nale's was two seconds from Hoochie and Tacky. On a good note: I think the sequin work is quite interesting but...I wish it was on a Figure Skating Costume and not on her Evening Gown. And I just think the sheer skirt panel starts waaaay to high and close to her you-know-what. Can we CLASS it up a bit ladies. Please?!

Finally, I have a bone to pick with...Miss Curacao's Gown:
Curacao Laurien Angelista: The beautiful Laurien wore this strapless white gown on Wednesday night's Miss Universe 2014 Preliminary Competition. For the most part, I thought this was a nice gown but then....I saw the hem:

I know that this might be "Designer Picky" for the most of you, but...the lining seemed to be much longer than the outside(self) portion of the gown. And, yes kids, this is a BIG NO-NO. I literally had no words for this, other than BAD CONSTRUCTION. This kind of gown/Construction offense is inexcusable. Maybe the dress was somehow shortened but the seamstress forgot to also shorten the lining...who knows what happened here.
